Never liked this scene. Always felt it was a little too extreme, and the dialogue made it all seem cartoonish. And also they took forlorn Marley and made him come off as an apathetic villain.
Of course this was all part of the plan to get Scrooge to straighten up but still it just seems to over the top.
Huh...my dad was right, there is a face in the wall...And to think my mom and I ambushed him when I was a kid and said we didn't see anything and nothing was there...sorry dad lol
man this freaked me out seeing it late at night as a kid on tv! Today I still prefer the George C. Scott version, but I'm glad this is still out there.
This is my favorite adaptation, as well, and despite my great respect for actors such as George C. Scott and Patrick Stewart, Albert Finney simply blows them out of the water.
I think this was the most unique of the Christmas carols. All the others just warned and hinted. This one revealed the reapers face, and threw scrooges ass straight to hell.
In the US during the 1980's, it would cut away at 6:28 back to Scrooge's bedchamber. Frankly, I think that worked better - the scene in Hades is just silly.
The ghost of Xmas future used to give me nightmares as a kid. I would have nightmares falling into a grave into a rocky tunnel to hell. It was scary. I slept with the light on.
I remember the first time I saw this I was 8 years old, Christmas of 1982 & when the Ghost of Christmas future turned to a skeleton, man that scared the Hell out of me.
awesome effects. :] (I always had the impression that Marley wasn't in hell, per se, but was in purgatory, working off his sins through works of mercy, like visiting Scrooge).
it's not christmas but july fourth and I think republicans need to watch this and repent and start caring about others and not an evil selfish agenda and compromise for the good of all of us.
Bob Cratchet talking to Tiny Tim just tears me up inside, as an adult and more to the point as a Father. It didn't have that effect on me watching this as a kid. I find myself saying "don't F up" to myself, regarding an income and being a provider for my kids. No grand, social declarations about the poor or the rich; only that *I*, personally, better do whatever I have to do to provide for my family and be able to prevent the preventable with that income.
@ptorrington I think the idea is that Scrooge is charging people ridiculous ammounts of interest, so they can never get their principle paid off. Right?
Also...yeah, it always kind of bothered me that Scrooge is viewed as evil for collecting on loans. I mean, if he wipes everyone's debts, won't he himself eventually go bankrupt?
@Pwells1I think it was more that he valued money over people. He would charge exorbitant rates, and wouldn't take pity on people, for example, not giving them a few extra days to repay even if it meant they would be kicked out onto the street or sent to the workhouses. If you ever get the chance, read the original (not abridged) book, it has some wonderful explainations in the afterword.
the hell scene confuses me. Marley came to scrooge to show him mercy and show him that he can change. Now for no reason Marley takes pleasure in Scrooge's pains and torments. Furthermore why are devils forging his chain? Scrooge forged it in life and was already wrapped around him but would be invisible until his death.
@anime1973 I always view the Scrooge story the same way I do "Its a Wonderful Life" : Scrooge and George Bailey are simply having a protracted psychotic episode. Inside the confines of that episode all sorts of incongruous things can happen. As long as they end up bringing the protagonist around to redemption, what does it matter? Its all part of the nightmare. That being said...its just a movie! XD
@anime1973 : because the Marley in the future is helping Scrooge learn about his future home, hell. A reality that didn't come to pass when Scrooge repented. Also, the devils had trouble keeping up with Scrooge's evil, being the "literal" forgers of the chains Scrooge "ordered" in life.
It was this movie that made the urban legend, of Dicken's making the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, "The Grim Reaper". For such a scary scene, it has a real Biblical view of repentance. Only "The Stingiest Man In Town", has a reference to the Devil.
SCROOGE NEVER REALIZED THEY WERE CELEBRATING HIS DEATH!

In some TV editions the entire hell bit is trimed out - probably due to the timing reasons.
