the best type of hobby is one that you love to do and you can make money! I am a blacksmith, gun collector, hunter, and all around outdoors man. The best part is blacksmithing more than pays for itself from what i sell!
I'm 15 but i spent all of my cash. )= I wish i could save because college...money is tight in my family so I'm going to start saving when I get my first job. Put aside some money for spending once a month and stuff. fingers crossed I follow through with that.
Jeff i really want to thank you for this video because ive been through the same thing. i worked all summer and then spent almost all my money on knives and other cool stuff, now that im 18 i need to pay for college so hearing this from you is a good reality check for me. thanks
Things have been a bit tight for us, especially over Cristmas and my wife is having to sell a kidney to help pay for the grocery's!! If things get really bad I may have to cancel my cable subscription and my Playboy subscription!
im 16 my parents dont fund me unless its for something they know im actually doing like food and cloths mabye movies. i save some money so i can blow it all on weed and beer on the weekends
@Russell9111 go door to door and offer to mow peoples lawns for $10 each. That's what i did way back in the day...used to fund all my super nintendo games lol
heyy jedd i am 14 and i save like 70%%% of my money....i do spend occasionally on hobbies and stuff but i think with the little extra money in the bank it will help me in the future
It's shocking how many people actually need this advice. Not spending money on wants before needs is hardly quantum physics, yet so many people still put themselves heavily in debt and say they don't understand it while they walk around with their iPad, new handbag, new shoes, go out twice a week, smoke...
People have entitlement issues. It's like people who get upset about the illegality of pirating.. they think they "deserve" to watch the product of other people's hard work for free.
I have been working since I was like 10..started saving for my first car..I didn't blow it on much...as a kid it killed me...but when I turned 15 and bought a 3 yr old Trans Am...I was thankful I did...great message brother!!
What I do is try and substitute my urge for something new with what I already have. For example, if I want a benchmade but all I have now is a spyderco, I cherish it, sort of substitute the urge. The only tip I give to people about saving money that you didn't mention is to wait a week, or a month. Surprisingly enough, majority of urges go away.
If you take 2 people each buying a $1200 tv. One person saves for 3 months to buy it. Another buys it right on the spot with a credit card.
The first guy buys it after 3 months and owns it.
The second guy is paying interest on top of a monthly bill.
If they both were to lose their jobs which one would be better off. The person who owns the tv and has nothing left to pay on it. Or the second person who wont be able to afford their credit card payment which will also result in extra fees.
Looking back I wish I would have invested all the money that I spent on cheap Chinese shit.
One thing most people don't do anymore is SAVE, they use credit. If you actually save money and plan out expenses even working a part time job can get you by with saving a good portion of cash each month.
Jeff, maybe one of your videos can be about investing. If you manage to save a few thousand dollars there might be an investment that will return a steady 3 to 5 percent. You will get that earning every single month. It is like getting a free knife every year. For example, if you have a 5,000.00 investment getting 4%, you would earn $200.00 for doing absolutely nothing. The misconception about investing is that only the rich invest. That is far from the truth.
What I would do is, live at home until you are at least 35. Looking back, what is the point of a single person paying for an entire house when you are only there to sleep? You will be at work all day. If you find the right person and fall in love and marry, then get your own place. If you're single, live at home as long as you can, you will save so much money. And don't irritate your parents, or this plan won't work.
Yeah Jeff I agree with you, I am only 13 and I work with my dad and do other jobs to earn money, in one month I may spend like 5dollars in a year maybe like 60-70 dollars depending if I need new cleats
Im a teenager and any money I get i put some away for a rainy day. And I buy stuff that I will use and that will last me a long time. I dont piss it all away on expensive clothes, shoes, cell phones etc. Thanks for the video Jeff. Take Care
@MrUnworthyOne Anybody can get killed with a firearm, but I think im less likely too seeing as I own my own firearms, I live for the adrenaline aswell though so try me.
great video jeff i'm young and when i get money my pay check is about 150 dollars every week so i spend about 50-80 dollars of that then i put the rest in my bank account. because i set up a trust account for myself i know that i can input money but until i'm 18 i can't spend any of that money. i think this is sort of smart.
I have a question to anyone that knows. I have a Fenix e21 ans it does not always turn on when click the tailcap on the first time. The tailcap is tightly screwed on so that's not it. Does anyone know what's up with it?
my best thing i do is i keep my hobbies but i put money aside for them like right now i have 2000 for bills housing and food and things then on top of that i have a monthly gas budget of 50$ and now im saving up for a tattoo so far i have 150$ saved but thats out of a savings account i have for my hobbies witch i put in about 20$ a month or what ever i have left over
I'm a 17 year old junior in highschool, and I take a personal finance class. Which was created by Dave Ramsey. If anyone is having financial problems I couldn't stress enough how dave can save you from debt or budgeting issues. Check him out, he's an awesome dude, and he has saved TONS from financial issues.
Great video like always jeff. Im 13 but have many hobbies such as a huge and growing zippo collection, many knives, firearms, outdoor survival and swimming. i bought a metal detector a few days ago thinking i would like it buyt it seems i dont and wasted my money. so i sold it to my dad for a little under what i paid
I started using prepaid debit cards only. I no longer have a conventional bank account as it kept getting me in trouble with overdraft fees. Most of my spending now is done with the debit card as its more secure if the card is stolen I am protected, unlike cash if it is stolen your just plain shit out of luck at that point. I can only spend what's on the card, once its gone that's it. I have been able to save so much money without dealing with all the bank fees.
My mother's 2000 mazda mpv does have some engine troubles now. But i'm impressed by how much it's gone through. It has over 200k miles now.
My 2010 mazda3 that i bought new already received big dents from stupid people who dont know how to park where i worked. The same thing happend to my coworkers' new cars. Now my 2010 car is not even that special to me anymore. A new car is not worth it
And yeah, dont pay for cable if u dont watch a lot of it. It was stupid of me to pay even $50 a month when I would just watch Netflix 90% of the time. And whatever shows or movies weren't on netflix, i would just download off on torrents
I was working full time and made a lot of money. But then i got stupid and bought a brand new car when i should have just got a certified used one. I now have less money for new guns. My contract is up with my employer so I decided I'm gonna take a break from work and now I'm back in college finishing up my Certificate. At the same time, I'm getting state and gov't GI Bill assistance, along with my parents letting me stay at their place with my dad paying the utility bills. I really appreciate
i am 15 and have been saving money for about 4 months or so for a car and have saved roughly 1,200 dollors and hopefully buying one next november or december.
You guys probably already know this, but, if your buying your first car, or any car really. BUY USED. Always always always buy used. But know your shit before you buy it. And DO NOT buy German cars. When they work, they're great. But they break more often than Japanese or American cars (For the most part) And when they do break, the parts usually cost more, and they're much harder to fix yourself.
@longboarders1 Kind of depends on where you live. In warmer climates, A ford Crown Victoria isn't a bad choice. For colder climates, a Buick Park Avenue or Ultra. For some reason they're VERY cheap on craigslist (At least where I live) But they're extremely reliable, just gotta make sure it has somewhat low miles and no rust.
Honda, Toyota, and Subaru are also awesome cars. But with Subaru, after about 120k miles, the head gaskets need to be replaced. After that, great car.
@longboarders1 And with the Honda (The Accord for instance), I've read that sometimes they can have transmission problems after about 130-150k miles
But if your in the market for your first car, always check craigslist. And if the guy on the phone tells you there's only 'little things' wrong with it, or it's 'Only a little rusty', he's probably lying to get you interested to come down and look at it, and once you get there you find out it's a mess. Always ask for more pictures.
I end up spending most of my allowance on food. But with a part time job it will be good to have some more money coming in. But yes, at 16, it really is good not to have any bills and not have to worry about having an empty wallet.
Good message Jeff. As a young person I like listening to people who know what they're talking about in life, rather than listening to people my age who like to think they know everything, but really they don't have a clue.
Jeff, as a teen, we start our adulthood in debt 90% of the time regardless. I myself have started adulthood in debt. University fees are put off, and on loan from the Australian government if you can't pay them up front.
i here you brother im 21 years old supporting my family and trying to go to school at the same time tringin with my guns and taking care of my fish..im in the middle class just enough to pay bills and have some fun after...
Canceled the cable last month because I was spending $100 just so I could watch the Food Network? Really? You're right about living for your hobbies. Last year I saved up for individual pieces of camping gear that I wanted only to realize that without a car I'd be hard pressed to use em (live in a city). So now guess what I'm saving for.
With hobbies like these it's really easy to get sucked into spending more than you should.
I had to budget my knife and gear spending. I set aside a certain amount a week, and can't spend over that on toys. This has resulted in a lot more money making it into my long term savings and investments. Which is good.
great video Jeff. helps to put things into perspective about the way things are in the real world. thanks for doing what you can to help others around you!
i've got a bachelor's, a master's and some other degrees. Academic bureaucratic bullshit, only good for impressing sheeple, i rather shoot sheeple :D gawd wish it were zombie time, z-day nao pls haha
@nephildevil You have an extremely ignorant way of looking at that. Look at what you just said, you wish that the undead would come back and devour the living, so that you can shoot things. You might want to consider getting that looked into by a professional. You know, the kind that go to college to help people that enjoy watching others be eaten and shooting them.
@EchoGolfKilo You are being extremely ignorant to my cynicism toward modern society and civilization. But yeah why not just shut up and conform like everybody else right.
Education is extremely important, three more years and I'll have my Zoology degree. Then hopefully work on my masters after that. It aint easy though, and I can see how alot of people give up that path, but I plan on giving it my all and then some.
Hopefully Pete from the armory channel watches this. He couldn't handle the fact that someone he knows got an Ed Brown and totally screwed himself to attain one. To me he sure has changed. But you my friend always keep it real keep up the great work.
Great video. I turn 18 on Sunday, and I spend money like it is water through my fingers. I have a (crappy) job, but will soon have a (less crappy) job. I love the way you stress education. I have been blessed with a solid brain and a good education, and am in for amount 8 more years of college, but I truly do believe this will give me the life I want. I have expensive hobbies (knives, golf, hot sauce), and I don't think I devote enough to savings. I hope to change that.
@amrjr007 heh an ironic request in a video dealing with finances. You're few seconds of mild annoyance helps Jeff keep a roof over his head. If you like the videos he makes it's worth putting up with.
Jeff, I was thinking the exact same thing not three days ago; and I decided that I started to take advantage of my learners permit and some extra cash I had and drive down to Spyderco way; and let me tell ya. I had a blast and I picked up a shiny new Cricket. منجل-
Excellent Advice. I recommend everyone, regardless of age, to live within your budget and to start saving some money for emergencies. Living within your budget is pretty simple, do not spend more than you make. An emergency fund is a sum of money you put into a savings account that you do not touch, unless there is an emergency. For people without any / a lot bills, that could be 500 to 1,000. For people with bills, should be between 3-6 months of living expenses. it'll give you peace of mind!
I'm 17 and have about 5 grand saved up. My Mom and Dad are grate and made me save haf the mony I get. I hus mad to them wen I was yug but now I'm vary happy thay did that. I know that thay wur looking out for me
Fully agree with you Jeff its why I set that knife purchase resolution at 2 knives one cheap one a dream knife the cheaper knife ($30-40) to have something extra in My collection I can use the rest of the year till its bought saving for an emmerson
I'm 15, and I have worked, and saved my money all my life. I have a good amount of money saved up (I won't say how much, but its a lot for a teenager to have to spend.) I don't spend much at all, maybe 30 bucks a week. I don't even have a hobby because my interests aren't approved by my parents.
Am I missing out on something? I have never been allowed to spend my money, because it would be "a waste and I would never use it". I don't have a hobby because I am not allowed to have one.
@FrackleRackle Don't tell them and do your hobby anyway. If they don't support you then they don't deserve to know. My parents were against me shooting for a long time, but now they've opened up to it a lot. My parents used to be fiercly anti-gun btw.
You're doing good by saving money kid. And if your parents disapprove of your hobbies, then prove to them (over time of course) that you can participate in those hobbies and still be a responsible person. Just do well in school, do your chores, but at the same time let them know that you are a young man and not a little b***h
Ive been working for about 6 months made about 4 grand CDN, havent spent any yet but my money from xmas and birthday oh i spend that I need a new knife come to think of it
I'd like to mention that these prices depend on where you live i live in kansas and we have a morgatge with insurance costs bout 500 a month however the problem is job allocation
Ugh I so need to follow that advice! Thanks for the great message Jeff!

i am 15 and have been saving money for about 4 months or so for a car and have saved roughly 1,200 dollors and hopefully buying one next november or december.
freestyleskier1231 1 month ago
You guys probably already know this, but, if your buying your first car, or any car really. BUY USED. Always always always buy used. But know your shit before you buy it. And DO NOT buy German cars. When they work, they're great. But they break more often than Japanese or American cars (For the most part) And when they do break, the parts usually cost more, and they're much harder to fix yourself.
SavageArms357 1 month ago
@SavageArms357 so what car do you recomend as a "first car"?
longboarders1 1 month ago
@longboarders1 Kind of depends on where you live. In warmer climates, A ford Crown Victoria isn't a bad choice. For colder climates, a Buick Park Avenue or Ultra. For some reason they're VERY cheap on craigslist (At least where I live) But they're extremely reliable, just gotta make sure it has somewhat low miles and no rust.
Honda, Toyota, and Subaru are also awesome cars. But with Subaru, after about 120k miles, the head gaskets need to be replaced. After that, great car.
SavageArms357 1 month ago

Jeff, as a teen, we start our adulthood in debt 90% of the time regardless. I myself have started adulthood in debt. University fees are put off, and on loan from the Australian government if you can't pay them up front.

This is really solid advice.
With hobbies like these it's really easy to get sucked into spending more than you should.
I had to budget my knife and gear spending. I set aside a certain amount a week, and can't spend over that on toys. This has resulted in a lot more money making it into my long term savings and investments. Which is good.

nephildevil 1 month ago
@nephildevil You have an extremely ignorant way of looking at that. Look at what you just said, you wish that the undead would come back and devour the living, so that you can shoot things. You might want to consider getting that looked into by a professional. You know, the kind that go to college to help people that enjoy watching others be eaten and shooting them.

TheFirearmEnthusiast 1 month ago
You're doing good by saving money kid. And if your parents disapprove of your hobbies, then prove to them (over time of course) that you can participate in those hobbies and still be a responsible person. Just do well in school, do your chores, but at the same time let them know that you are a young man and not a little b***h
