@westideas no one will ever know for sure. some possibilities: 1. cheney has spoken often of the US having to reassert its military strength after vietnam. 2. his ties to the oil industry and the possibility of a lot of money to be made, both from the oil and from the contracts with halliburton, 3. bush/rove saw the political benefits of being a war-time president. you should also read about the project for a new american century, which included several bushies.
