@nokomisforge I have used magnetite as contained in taconite (magnetite + bentonite) and also magnetite dug from a mine in NC. Both worked and made very nice steel blooms.
hey I'm interested in making a similar small smelter from brickwork, did you guys just use ordinary cement? or do you need some kind of fire proof cement?
I weld & the slag while I'm welding is only that fluid for a second, if that. then again that slag is purposeful (to protect the weld from oxidation) so it was probably made to cool off really fast to protect the weld
@Acrimonius1408 Yup, the slag or imprities come out at the bottom as slag, or if the metal is melted in a crucible they float to the top and have to be skimmed.
