Try it with onion gravy. Thinly slice about four medium onions and fry in olive/vegetable oil for about an hour and a half (or more) on a low heat stirring about every 10-15 minutes. The sugars in the onions caramelise from the inside out rather than being singed at the edges. When you have a deep dark brown mush in the pan add about 400ml of beef stock and a glass of red wine or ale then stir and sift in about 1 1/2 tablespoons of plain flour in until you have the thickness you like.
