Average wage of $10.83 per hour my fucking ass there's been employees there 7 years who make under $9 and hour infact the starting wage for a Walmart employee is under $8 an hour. man that NBC guy has his head so far up the Walmart Ceo's ass someone should grab his ankles to make sure he doesn't get suck all the way in...!
4:58 I just don't think they have any option anymore but cash. 5:44 We have a unique relationship with our associates as we don't call them employees, and they have some sort of health care be it state or wic or somethin' 95% of'em. You know. MMM kay. Walmart and our trade has destroyed and will continue to destroy the US.
He is not the common man he is a fucking scum he pays workers minimal wage and doesn't give them a chance for medicare, most are on medicade!!!! He is such a duece bag Wal-Mart takes away all the local buiness(THE ACTUAL COMMON MAN!!!!!!), common man my ASS!!!!!!
@Subtalvik2 You're just to stupid in love with the system to fucking get a brain yourself. But little toaties we don't just string up on trees... instead we slowly make them cry day and night, make'em feel real. They'll wish to die. Little toadies like you better run faster and hide better than your overlords.
Wake up and watch the vampire system suck middle class dry. Then we'll all rise up and destroy the evil pigs and toadies who do their bidding. Run. Run. & Hide.
@Subtalvik2 No, not jealous. Angry yes. That's the emotion I feel. This bastard is a liar and a cheap skate like the entire Walton family. Look how much they've donated to charities. It'll make you puke compared to their networths. I gave a speech about the downfalls of monopsonies back in 2005/2006. And how they control suppliers to ever cut costs and force them to off shore. And how this will cause a demand destruction from both suppliers and consumers. Here we are.

lol 3:05, that doesnt mean the parents are sacrificing clothing, there just buying there kids the cheapest cothing they can, while they go out and wear nike's
thats funny, wonder how he would know anything about the little people that they pay almost nothing, offer health ins they cant afford, walmart is a joke prob the worst place in the country you could work at and they need a union and they know it, they are so opposed to a union because they would have to treat people like humans if they had one. all walmarts must be unionized at once to be successful including lowes also owened by walmart ofcourse associates being fired 4 talking to unions works
I have worked on few walmarts in construction they have lost their way! malls made it hard for them dillards bailed on what could have fixed alot blame it on everybody finance merrill lynch!!!!!!!!!!!!!all go back to that lets talk about that!!!!!!!!!!
I have worked for Wal-Mart for 13 years. I started as an hourly employee and worked my way up to the manager of one of the stores. I have helped 26 other associates move up to management, and now all of them are still working for the company and make good livings. I do not understand why people who cannot produce like to pass judgment on things they know nothing about. I have done many things with this company to help improve the lives of people who might not have had the same opportunity places.
good point. I just watched the CNBC show on wal mart where Faber made the ceo look like a fool. In addition, they showed the some of the requisite walmart singing/chanting indoctrination. Then the supplier factories which were atrocious.
Yea cause people like you don't work that hard and hire on friends only, hire on people who are dumb as dirt and then fire others to move up your friends. I worked for Wal Mart and the horror stories are true. You are full of shit keborn34.
@vicmacke I do too, and in ALL my life, I haven't hated ANYONE more than my managers. I've been robbed at gunpoint, cheated on and stolen from and NONE of those people evoke the feelings of disgust and anger that I feel when my 'superiors' tell me they expect me to moonwalk on water. FUCK WAL MART indeed, my friend.
@vicmacke You work at Walmart, hate Walmart, yet keep working for Walmart? HUH? If it is so bad, why do you go back for more? "Because there is no better option," you say? Well... then it isn't Walmart you are angry at. It is the WORLD you are angry at. "Well, it's because I don't have enough opportunity," you say? Well... then it isn't the world you are angry at. It is YOURSELF that you despise. You see, this isn't about Walmart. It is about you, and your lack of ability or industry.
@JoshuaH688 Fuck you. Some of these poor bastards really can't find work. I KNOW PEOPLE AT MY JOB that i got hired on that have been without solid work for the past 3 years. People with associate degree, bachelor's as myself even lawyers. You despise everyone else instantly without actually LIVING out in the real world. You live on some priveliged fuck up street where the masses will evenutally converge to CHOP your FUCKING NUT SACKS OFF! If I were you, ID be scared, I WOULD RUN, RUN & HIDE!
@jmitterii2 As someone with a bachelor's degree, you should realize the psychological inferiority which is demonstrated by the usage of rabid online profanity and Youtube threats. The real world isn't always fair, and it certainly isn't always pretty. That is why a strong dose of reality is needed. While you chop at other people's nut sacks, you may expose your own.
@JoshuaH688 Is the little toady scared? And any meaningful talk is to bozos like you is worthless. It's over. Time is approaching. You think bad little words hurt?... oh no. Just wait. And we've had our nuts exposed for long enough. Many had them ripped off already. You pigs and toadies day's are numbered. And it won't be pleasant as it hasn't been for the majority.Day of being a push fucking over playing the fucking games are over. run. run. and hide.
@jmitterii2 What is a bozo? What time is approaching? What should I wait for? What do nuts exposed have to do with this conversation? In specific socio-demographic terms, please define and explain the differences between pigs and toadies. Please further elaborate on the body of evidence which you used to conclude that I am a bozo, pig, or toadie. Please define "push fucking" in more detail. Why should I run and hide? What should I be afraid of? We're Walmart. We own you. Go Shop. :-)
@JoshuaH688 Yep. You're walmart alright! LOL! Define "Kiss my ass!" Now go get my cart its outside traveling across some street. Hurry up little toady and do your piggy master's bidding. Hurry. Hurry. You're gonna get fired if you don't. I like watching you scurry, you silly bozo the clown. You're really fun to dislike.
@Martial024 Capitalism sucked. We tried that, and it doesn't work. It benefited the wealthy, not the low income workers. And for Walmart, I agree with you. Walmart is bad. Kmart is much better.
@dmana3172 Kmart's almost just as bad to there employees I worked there for over 6 years. I've only been promoted once then knock down to my old job. when they got rid of customer representatives they even took away my extra 75¢. an hour and before I left for a better job I was only making $8.59 an hour. shop target and best buy they treat the employees with respect.....!
@dmana3172 You have no understanding of capitalism if you say it failed. Corporatism failed us. There is a significant difference. Perhaps you should educate yourself before making an uninformed statement.
LOL, capitalism hasnt even been tried the correct way for years because of arrogant thinking like yours. Do your history and look up the roaring 20's. Kmart is better? lol Kmart got bought out by Sears and is sucking more every day. Walmart pays more starting out to people and gives benefits unlike starting out at Target or Kmart. I started out making 15.60 in a Walmart Distribution center. Ge your facts straight or don't speak at all
Capitalism has not even been practiced for 100 years. Do your homework and look up the roaring 20's. Whats so wrong with being successful if you work hard for it?
@dmana3172 laissez faire capitalism has proven itself time and time again not to work well for the majority. All systems are man made and require a balance. A liberated free people using a representative and democratic form of government requires checks on capitalism as it creates a plutocracy without such checks. Walmart is a monopsony and must be dealt with appropriately.Businesses cannot consolidate to such a degree to have such purchasing powers it can dictate and pinch supply.
Wallfart needs to down size and in many place go away. I will not spend a dollar in their stores. I spend in local town stores and smaller businesses cost a little more but feels better.
These SOB'S want to Team up with Gates in this National Computer ...after they Bankrupted all the States in the UNION for NOT giving WALMART Employes HEALTH CARE now they do with a $5 grand Deductable No one on Minuim wage can affrod that Might as well not even have it ..
Nature Made co Q-10 is the ONLY One On the Market with the REAL Q-10 in it ! WalGreens has the Best Deal on Nature Made buy 1 get one free ! Walmart GOT RID of MANY items Land o Lakes Milk ! Stash Tea that cures MRSA ! White Tea
Dr.Oz tested all the Q-10 Nature Made He said was the ONLY One with the Real stuff in it ...so buyer Beware ! WalMart wants to team up with GATES for the National Health Care Computer and they caused the STATES to go Bankrupted !
Hey WalMart The Emergency room nurse told me the reason I wasn't being taken care of was You and illegals that bankrupted TennCare I was sent home to die ! In 2003 ! I made it you Nazi's !!!
I live in Canada and little 16 year olds are making 18 dollars an hour working at tim hortons and rig welders make 150 dollars an hour. Avewrage tradesman make 6 figures...and we have free health care
Matt Lauer is amazed to hear that common, normal people are buying cheaper cuts of meat to save a buck because Matt Lauer makes approximately $200 000 a year if not more.
And CEO for Walmart couldnt care less about the common man, hes out to make a buck.
And Walmart is the lead employer because 75% of their workforce is part time work only, this stops the common man from forming unions which benefit the common man, and this guy says he is for the common man!
Well the CEO of Wal Mart will get hit hard, well hard relative to his income, if people stop shopping there or begin buying cheaper goods.
I assume he, like most CEOs at major corporations, will be given shares as part of his compensation as CEO in addition to his basic salary, so if the share price slumps he'll lose out.
Purina Little Bites went up 4 Bucks in a week ! Kosher hot dogs went up $2 bucks in a week Gain detergent went up $4 in a week ! I no Longer buy Gain or Kosher Hot dogs ..dog food I gotta have ..I am going else-where next week !I hate WalMart !
Also if people want affordable products someone has to take a hit somewhere. Unions would cause the corporate office to look for cheaper suppliers (probably in China) which in turn would cause US producers and distributors to downsize because their unions want fair wages as well, causing them to shut down from bankruptcy.. etc... etc..
I think 10 bucks an hour is a decent wage for a walmart employee. If you don't like it, get a new job.
hahaha thats not good research...thats common fuckin sense..lol If i have more money ill try to buy more of something....if im getting broke ill cut down...i work for wal mart and i tell them everyday they need to get managers with more leadership and better common sense in decision making..because well half the managment are dumb as rocks...lol
this is ridiculous pandering... "it's amazing how specific your research is" after he says they may switch from a big box to a small box if they had less money??
this is some of the worst journalism i've ever seen... horribly bias...
I see no implication of me saying you were defending Wal-Mart. I think it's obvious you aren't.
I was just pointing out your posts weren't making any sense.
As for saying Wal-Mart sucks dick, you're preaching to the choir. I worked for Wal-Mart for 3 1/2 years while I was in college....I definitely know what it's like.
yeah, that place needs a union bad....i got a friend that works there with his wife, and i dont know why they put up with what they do........they work them off the clock and shit.....fuck that
There's a reason Walmart is one of the world's biggest private employers, they understand how to run their bussiness and profit without having to lay off workers. If you want to run a successful company competing in the free market, you have to be able to think like the consumer and always be prepared for the worst possible scenario. Walmart has done it and has done it well, now the rest of Wall Street has to follow suit, if they want to last. Always remember adaptation is the key to survival.
dude, wal-mart survives by putting others out of business......yeah they may not lay off anybody, but when a wal-mart moves into a small town, all the mom and pop stores shut down, so for 300 ppl that lose their jobs at the small stores they may hire 100 in their place at the wal-mart. two, when you pay $7 an hour at wal-mart, how is that really not being laid off anyway? i mean you cant tell me that you have a good quality of life with what they pay you......youre an idiot
i mean with that logic, youre telling me that all companies should pay the executives of their companies in the 6 figures and the ground employees $7 an hour? you would then have no middle class.....people can not live off of $15,000 a year.
yeah dude, you call that living, obviously you never grew up poor, it sucks.....my mom made like 7 bucks an hour and we lived in shithole section 8 housing and barely made it.............thats not living dude. i mean, lets give people a living wage, so they can have it a little better.
Well, what you're advocating is protectionism and borders on socialism.
There are minimum wage laws, I don't know whether Wal Mart circumvent them as I'm not an American.
The problem is that once the government begins dictating to companies how much to pay employees its the start of a long, slippery slope.
I don't know how much $7 an hour worked out at for your mom, presumably she worked 2000 hours a year (40 a week x 52) so that's around $14,000. Admittedly not much but enough to buy food.
I'm not at all suggesting that Walmart's ground employees could live off $7 per hour. I'm more or less suggesting that it's better to be employed and be paid the minimum wage than to get laid off from a manufacturing company while struggling for years to get a job. I guess, you could say that it's almost no different than living on minimum wage. I believe things need not change fundamentally in order for there to be a middle class, starting with education and increase the minimum wage.
from 5:00 to 5:11, he says, " many customers just don't have any option any more," hhhmmm, I wonder what that means. Does it mean that people have spent their credit to survive, and that now everybody owes? Does it mean that we owe corporations money, but we don't have jobs to make money?
no shit its $7.25 in texas, and it aint like $10 is really any better, i hate people that defend $10-12 an hour as "good" pay......thats poverty level dude.
I thought that Mike Duke gave an honest description of consumer trends, based upon the evidence he had gathered. Whether his claims are accurate is another matter. I dont understand everyone's reactions to his statements. When he said people now buy vitamin supplements instead of medications, he wasn't saying that's what Americans OUGHT to do. He simply said that's what they ARE doing. It didn't seem to me like he was spouting pro-capitalist, pro Wall-Mart rhetoric. He was simply stating facts.
what's so bad about what this guy is saying? If you want to understand how middle class Americans, as consumers, are feeling about the economy, then look at what the members of the middle class are buying today as compared to the products they were buying in the past. I mean, comeon guys. I understand we all have liberal views, but let's not be overly critical about this interview. Anyone can bash on wallmart, but you can't deny that, as an employer, wallmart is essential to the economy.
If WalMart cared half as much for their unassociated "Associates" than they do their customers, Wow, it might just be a great place to work.
The employees need a voice within WalMart which is currently kept silent by every level of Mgmt. Much as I've never been a proponent for Unions, things I've witnessed and experienced at WalMart over 10 years has certainly made me rethink my position.
"Respect for the individual" died slowly with Sam Walton and the birth of a Corporate Empire.
Uhhh...maybe adults do not like the crap you sell as clothes for them. The only reason I buy toddler clothes there is because they are super cheap and my kids stain them with in 5 mins. I spend more than $2 on a shirt for me Mr Duke.
I like this quote; "90% of our associates have health insurance of some fashion". If you read between the lines he's saying 90% are on either Medicaid or on their spouse's insurance from another company. Way to go Walmart! The other statement he makes is 3/4 of our managers were hourly employees. Lol, he makes being manager at Walmart like being CEO. They're made managers to get more work out of the slaves. It's the salary game. lol
Matt lauer just showed us how much of a whore he is. At least a streetwalker only degrades herself. This fucker pisses on anyone he thinks actually buys this bullshit.
If the walmart CEO wants to speak for american workers, he should consider buying less products from Chinese sweatshops staffed with young children. Fuck Walmart.
I have a friend, low management at Wal-*&^%. Management had to attend a mandatory meeting before the election. Its illegal to tell employees how to vote but Wal-Mart went through numerous reason with management as to how jobs would be affected negatively if Democrats won office. The management in turn was encouraged to pass this info on to employess at small meetings-not mandatory. Is this fraud?
*U*K WALMART!! I won't listen to anything they say. I completely stopped shopping there 6 years ago. They are cheap because most of their products are MADE IN CHINA. Great way to help the USA economy, huh?? Just get it all from China, across the world, from workers paid next to nothing.
NO SURPRISE: THE MEDIA IS BOUGHT BY WALLMART. Always one against many. Why are "the ones" always winning? Grow food in your backyard, don't use the dryer and the clothe will last more, way more. Don't play the control box game, "a gift" does not mean "I love you." Don't let others rell you what to do. A used car bought from a particular instead of a dealer can work well. "COMMON SENSE" IS WHAT AMERICA NEED, and by "COMMON" I mean "COMMUNITY"
I try to stay away from walmart as much as possible unless I ave to go there. Go to Target instead, Although their practices are probably not much better
Seems like they may have cut part out, but I don't think he really backed up how the Employee Free Choice Act will be damaging to the American Economy. I would expect he'd want other companies to meet the same good treatment Wal-Mart has for their employees so that their customers wouldn't be forced to scrimp and save at the end of the month. But I guess Poor America is good for WalMart. Unions shrink their market share.
Does Matt Lauer or Mike Duke make $10.83 an hour? I hardly think so. But single parents are suppose to support a family and pay for child care as well as insurance on part hours at Wal-Mart. How is this possible? The Employee Free Choice Act will better the lives of Wal-Mart workers everywhere.
You know what would help? Lowering peoples taxes so they had more of their own money and lowering business taxes so more companies will hire and so maybe a person who unfortunately works for such a place like walmart can get a decent paying job. I saw a comment of yours on a anti-tea party video and laughed when you stated "people shouldn't expect something for nothing." Hypocrite. Anyone that works or shops at walmart are part of the problem.
Why is it people always want to lower taxes? Why not raise employee wages? Pay a person a living wage and taxes will be least of his problems.
Lower business taxes, I dont think so! Wal-Mart can afford to pay their taxes and should pay more instead of getting tax abatements when they come into a comminuty. Thats not good for the local economy in the first place.
As far as your last comment, republicans always want something for nothing. You cant blame people for working at Wal-Mart, trying to make a living. As far as shopping at Wal-Mart, I havent shopped there since 1992 and dont plan to start until its workers have a Union.
raise wages->ppl don't worry about taxes->have enough tax revenue to get universale healthcare, inner city/rural school funding, and implementation of better energy sources
You child, have no business commenting on a subject you know nothing about. Lowering taxes to get Walmart to hire more people is not the reason to lower business taxes MORON! Small Business taxes!!! More than 75% of all new jobs are created by what? Small Business! If you knew anything about business taxes maybe you would of understood my comment. I'm not a right-winger! That's hilarious. I'm an Independent who against war, taxes and BIG government. You are one of the MANY sheep who voted Obama
When did Duke even discuss the issue of lowering taxes in this video? What are you even talking about?! Besides Obama's plan to lower taxes will only affect small businesses making under $250,000 of profit a year and not large mega-corparations. Anyway, 90 percent of small businesses in this country fail within their first year, so get your facts straight. 75 percent of jobs is an overestimation that doesnt take into account the number of jobs lost when businesses fold.
I was replying to someone else, it's best to not get into a conversation halfway through. 90% of small businesses DO NOT fail within the first year, that is an estimate you just grabbed off some blog you read. And to be honest, there is no accurate stats for this question, depending on who you ask it's anywhere from 30-60%, but not 90%! If you do the math with the Census Bureau reports, over 50% of small businesses that operated in 2000 were still alive late 2007. Get your facts straight goof.
Oh, and as a side point, if Wall Mart were to just go out of business, how long do you think the bread lines will be in this country? They're the largest employer in the US!!! I understand they ought to be paying their workers more and should allow them to unionize, but comeon! I think any responsible economic policy should ensure that Wall Mart doesn't have to lay off tens of thousands of its workers. Do you WANT the social services programs in this country to go bankrupt? I don't.
So using your logic if small businesses(250k or under according to Obama but in reality I say 1 million and under) if these small businesses are given big tax breaks Walmart would go out of business? I don't think so genius. Social service programs would go bankrupt? lol They already are! We need good jobs not more GOVERNMENT! DAH
There would still be jobs if Wal-Mart went out of business because people would still need food, clothes, etc. People would spend their money elsewhere. Other stores would come in and pick up the slack.
We are already subsidizing Wal-Mart as their employees make poverty wages and qualify for government assistance.
Matt shut the fuck up. You moron. china mart fucks everyone. They drive american companys to china and leave slave labor jobs here for americans. china mart employees organize and form unions to protect you and your familys. The american people pays for walmarts heathcare insurance through public aid. wal mart is a monopoly. Should be destroyedlike standard oil was. walmart is evil and bad for american citizens. There ceo is a pimp. and matt is your prostitute.
Matt is out of touch. I do not watch main stream media.I do not shop at Walmart. A disgrace to the American people. They ran all the small businesses out of business. They helped run manufacturing from this country. They perpetuate buying useless cheap junk that fills our landfills. I could go on and on.
Shop walmart = Supporting SLave labor.. Shop walmart= Sucking blood from people living in poor countries that have no life other than making 1-4 dollars per day living in a 10 x 10 room, with no health care. Btw those sweatshops are owned by walmart stockholders. If you really have to shop walmart, dont shop textiles.
Bullshit. As if people who shop at Wal-Mart would suddenly grow a conscience once their income starts increasing again. People are addicted to that Chinese made crap and can't get enough of it.
Sugarpuddin, you're naive in thinking that all CEOs are the same.
Clearly, in poor or good times, Wal-Mart does well. Naturally, they'd know what their customer wants and adjust accordingly, it's how they've been so successful. They manipulate the greed of Americans for their own domination in selling stuff.
So really, stop bitching about CEOs and blame yourself. Buy American. Pay a bit extra, etc.
And banks are lending now, so stop talking out of your ass. They just aren't lending stupidly.
CEO wages have gone from 20 times greater than the avg employee to over 500 times greater than the average employee in a mere 8 years
The Bail Out does not help Main Street; it is welfare for Wall Street!
Small businesses cant get loans; kids cant get loans to go to college; home owners cant get loans; but the elite of Wall Street get to keep their billions of dollars in Christmas bonuses last year!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm still waiting for unions to make their own cars and run their own supermarkets. Why wait for "evil" businessmen to always open businesses? Drive the new Hypocrite, from UAW Autos. "GM was making cars nobody wanted" -Michael Moore. Try closing a production line of GM, unions bitch and go on strike. Go strike on this. Overseas labor needs work too. Don't tell me you care about their wages either. Time to adapt to a new age. You were never entitled to a job. Braindead, by UAW motors
Ya unions are so bad... How much do you think this guy makes a year.? 20, 50, 90, million?
But if the guy at the bottom asks for a buck more he's the one breaking the bank... Please... boycott Wal-Mart. Try to buy domestic goods It's the only way to really turn things around.
Listen and Remeber, dumb quote that stuck with me: The Poor, Buy THINGS (what i mean is when u go into there house their counters and shelves, are fuckin full of.. things) The Middle Class Buy LIABILITIES (stuff like vacations and cars ...i think) And The Rich BUY ASSESTS (Vending machine, property 2 rent out. things that pay pack. And the money they get from that they buy...more assests)
When Matt Lauer asks Duke "What's the Truth?" when it comes to making it easier for workers to unionize, he knew what his answer would be. It wasn't the truth, it was an opinion.
The middle class continues to erode. As a Canadian, it saddens me to see so much anti-union propaganda on US media and worse, that the public swallows it. Proud union workers was one of the major factors that made America a great nation.
All WalMart workers exploited: unpaid hours, unpaid overtime, gender bias in wages, racial bias in wages and promotions, favoritism in scheduling and bonuses, etc.
Walmart destroys local small business and entire communities, drives down wages and strategically undercuts local retail base with unfair 'loss leader' pricing.
Bankrupt former shop owners now run WM departments that put them out of business in many small American towns.
And let's not forget that Wal-Mart has virtually everything made in China. So, in spite of how many low wage employees it has, it is also taking an incredible number of jobs away from Americans. He also fails to mention what kind of medical insurance Wal-Mart employees have. My guess is Medicare.
Matt Lauer is such a suckup to corporate power and authority -- he asks "what's the truth?" to the Walmartian, as if this corporatist fascist knows all and is some sort of arbiter of truth about the EFTA, when of course Walmart only gives its view rather than anything of benefit to their workers -- what HOGWASH!!!
So wal-mart is the basis of the economy. Follow Wal-Mart and you know how the financial sitiuation is going. It almost seems like they're preying on the poor. Peoples lives are just business. Wow

I have done many things with this company to help improve the lives of people who might not have had the same opportunity places.

vmf214nb 2 years ago 3
What is wrong with Capitalism? As long as there is freedom then the workers are free to do as they wish..
Walmart is bad because they make a ton of money then tell alot of workers to get health care on the tax payers tab..
While they have jets waiting to take executives to any area that is thinking about starting up a union to get fair and equal wages and benefits.
Its greed not Capitalism.
What is better than Capitalism? Everything else pretty much eats of each other..
Martial024 1 year ago

@dmana3172
Capitalism has not even been practiced for 100 years. Do your homework and look up the roaring 20's. Whats so wrong with being successful if you work hard for it?
Diezelraccoon 1 year ago
@dmana3172 laissez faire capitalism has proven itself time and time again not to work well for the majority. All systems are man made and require a balance. A liberated free people using a representative and democratic form of government requires checks on capitalism as it creates a plutocracy without such checks. Walmart is a monopsony and must be dealt with appropriately.Businesses cannot consolidate to such a degree to have such purchasing powers it can dictate and pinch supply.

Man that reporter is so amazed by common sense..

Always remember adaptation is the key to survival.
pthdy 2 years ago
dude, wal-mart survives by putting others out of business......yeah they may not lay off anybody, but when a wal-mart moves into a small town, all the mom and pop stores shut down, so for 300 ppl that lose their jobs at the small stores they may hire 100 in their place at the wal-mart. two, when you pay $7 an hour at wal-mart, how is that really not being laid off anyway? i mean you cant tell me that you have a good quality of life with what they pay you......youre an idiot
crowdaddy13 2 years ago
i mean with that logic, youre telling me that all companies should pay the executives of their companies in the 6 figures and the ground employees $7 an hour? you would then have no middle class.....people can not live off of $15,000 a year.
crowdaddy13 2 years ago
They clearly can live off $15,000 a year as a million of them do just that.
theporksicle 2 years ago
yeah dude, you call that living, obviously you never grew up poor, it sucks.....my mom made like 7 bucks an hour and we lived in shithole section 8 housing and barely made it.............thats not living dude. i mean, lets give people a living wage, so they can have it a little better.
crowdaddy13 2 years ago
Well, what you're advocating is protectionism and borders on socialism.
There are minimum wage laws, I don't know whether Wal Mart circumvent them as I'm not an American.
The problem is that once the government begins dictating to companies how much to pay employees its the start of a long, slippery slope.
I don't know how much $7 an hour worked out at for your mom, presumably she worked 2000 hours a year (40 a week x 52) so that's around $14,000. Admittedly not much but enough to buy food.
theporksicle 2 years ago
I'm not at all suggesting that Walmart's ground employees could live off $7 per hour. I'm more or less suggesting that it's better to be employed and be paid the minimum wage than to get laid off from a manufacturing company while struggling for years to get a job. I guess, you could say that it's almost no different than living on minimum wage. I believe things need not change fundamentally in order for there to be a middle class, starting with education and increase the minimum wage.
pthdy 2 years ago
from 5:00 to 5:11, he says, " many customers just don't have any option any more," hhhmmm, I wonder what that means. Does it mean that people have spent their credit to survive, and that now everybody owes? Does it mean that we owe corporations money, but we don't have jobs to make money?

I thought that Mike Duke gave an honest description of consumer trends, based upon the evidence he had gathered. Whether his claims are accurate is another matter. I dont understand everyone's reactions to his statements. When he said people now buy vitamin supplements instead of medications, he wasn't saying that's what Americans OUGHT to do. He simply said that's what they ARE doing. It didn't seem to me like he was spouting pro-capitalist, pro Wall-Mart rhetoric. He was simply stating facts.
nasbster915 2 years ago
what's so bad about what this guy is saying? If you want to understand how middle class Americans, as consumers, are feeling about the economy, then look at what the members of the middle class are buying today as compared to the products they were buying in the past. I mean, comeon guys. I understand we all have liberal views, but let's not be overly critical about this interview. Anyone can bash on wallmart, but you can't deny that, as an employer, wallmart is essential to the economy.
nasbster915 2 years ago
Got Spin?
If WalMart cared half as much for their unassociated "Associates" than they do their customers, Wow, it might just be a great place to work.
The employees need a voice within WalMart which is currently kept silent by every level of Mgmt. Much as I've never been a proponent for Unions, things I've witnessed and experienced at WalMart over 10 years has certainly made me rethink my position.

Unions shrink their market share.
mikebee02 2 years ago

Anyone that works or shops at walmart are part of the problem.
apocalyptichybrid2 2 years ago
Why is it people always want to lower taxes? Why not raise employee wages? Pay a person a living wage and taxes will be least of his problems.
Lower business taxes, I dont think so! Wal-Mart can afford to pay their taxes and should pay more instead of getting tax abatements when they come into a comminuty. Thats not good for the local economy in the first place.
OhioDemocrat 2 years ago 2

You child, have no business commenting on a subject you know nothing about. Lowering taxes to get Walmart to hire more people is not the reason to lower business taxes MORON! Small Business taxes!!! More than 75% of all new jobs are created by what? Small Business! If you knew anything about business taxes maybe you would of understood my comment. I'm not a right-winger! That's hilarious. I'm an Independent who against war, taxes and BIG government. You are one of the MANY sheep who voted Obama
apocalyptichybrid2 2 years ago
When did Duke even discuss the issue of lowering taxes in this video? What are you even talking about?! Besides Obama's plan to lower taxes will only affect small businesses making under $250,000 of profit a year and not large mega-corparations. Anyway, 90 percent of small businesses in this country fail within their first year, so get your facts straight. 75 percent of jobs is an overestimation that doesnt take into account the number of jobs lost when businesses fold.
nasbster915 2 years ago
I was replying to someone else, it's best to not get into a conversation halfway through. 90% of small businesses DO NOT fail within the first year, that is an estimate you just grabbed off some blog you read. And to be honest, there is no accurate stats for this question, depending on who you ask it's anywhere from 30-60%, but not 90%! If you do the math with the Census Bureau reports, over 50% of small businesses that operated in 2000 were still alive late 2007. Get your facts straight goof.
apocalyptichybrid2 2 years ago
Oh, and as a side point, if Wall Mart were to just go out of business, how long do you think the bread lines will be in this country? They're the largest employer in the US!!! I understand they ought to be paying their workers more and should allow them to unionize, but comeon! I think any responsible economic policy should ensure that Wall Mart doesn't have to lay off tens of thousands of its workers. Do you WANT the social services programs in this country to go bankrupt? I don't.
nasbster915 2 years ago
Wal-Mart will never go out of business, as long as they exploit the poor. and with this bad economy, their will always be poor people.

apocalyptichybrid2 2 years ago
There would still be jobs if Wal-Mart went out of business because people would still need food, clothes, etc. People would spend their money elsewhere. Other stores would come in and pick up the slack.

SUPPORT CHINA... SHOP WAL- MART.
1111mjon 2 years ago 2

Brainwash Like paying Sams club $45Bucks to shop there ...and no limit they say lol thats every-where ..

Gimme a Break!
America have the government they deserve!

Remeber it and see were ur purchases fit you.

Thank God for Wal Mart - cheap crap, cheap! This guy is a tool. $10/hour: That's living, thanks Wal Mart

This is simply an infomercial for Walmart
Walmart: Always Low Wages, Always
80% of Walmart store employees are part-time
32 hrs/wk or less @ $7.50/hr
60% receive Federal Assistance
Walmart destroys local small business and entire communities, drives down wages and strategically undercuts local retail base with unfair 'loss leader' pricing.
Bankrupt former shop owners now run WM departments that put them out of business in many small American towns.

He that's an american credo : if you can't beat them, join them ;-)

And let's not forget that Wal-Mart has virtually everything made in China. So, in spite of how many low wage employees it has, it is also taking an incredible number of jobs away from Americans. He also fails to mention what kind of medical insurance Wal-Mart employees have. My guess is Medicare.

I love the way they don't call their minimum wage slaves employees, but "associates" as if they have a stake in the firm.

Larry Summers is optimistic?!?! Of course he is optimistic. Wall Street and Wal-Mart are going to be just fine, thank you.
