If China attacked them, it would be an indirect attack in the US and allow the US to have a right to step in. i think it's a smart political play for us Americans over the next 10-15 years. It doesn't matter that its wrong for them to be bullied, or that they should be respected - they are throwing money away, and lives if a conflict occurs - creating nothing but a symbolic gesture that wouldn't stop an invading force for a day.

By selling these arms to Taiwan we actually bring the unit price down for our military and get the extra benifit of any additional R&D / upgrades that result from the sale.
