This is what the UK and many other countries did, including the USA. Cutting debt is alot easier and less painful than plumeting into a depression.

@JPBStory House prices rose under Labour Gov. as property ownership/inflated prices was the only thing we had left propping up the "Economy". We don't manufacture anything anymore and don't export anything anymore. Gordon Brown knew he had to keep the housing market artificially high in order to minimise Gov debt (eg, a retail unit up for sale on paper valued at £1.1 million through a bank, albeit not sold, looks a whole lot better when balancing the books than if it was valued at £500,000).
@Bellalodicci9 The lack of manufacturing was a result of the 1980s and the shift from manufacturing to commercial businesses for wealth generation. Fair enough Labour did nothing to reverse this and the result of the inflated property market. But they did not create the high pricing, that was a result of people instead of moving houses doing them up and creating overly elaborate houses. That however probably wasn't helped by the lack of affordable houses being built which was their fault.

It's not common sense because it isn't SENSIBLE to trust one group of people over another group of people when you don't know any of them, can't be sure that whatever they say isn't being twisted by a spin doctor or a biased newspaper and know that at the end of the day; they are in exactly the same jobs with the same resources and in the same sort of situation as the previous group of people. Before the recession, Brown kept borrowing lower than it was in 1996-1997 (3.4% of GDP). Amazing how many people have been kept from that information.

This is what the UK and many other countries did, including the USA. Cutting debt is alot easier and less painful than plumeting into a depression.

The party and its mambers elected him, the only thing Gordon didn't do was win an election. On unelected PM's ,David Cameron is unelected, he didn't win it. Eden called a General Election and increased the Conservative majority from 17 to 55. Cameron is elected because he is locked in for the next five years with the support of the Lib Dems. @Bellalodicci9 I think he made some mistakes - selling the gold for instance among others. But as prime minister, he was goose-stepped by the labour PR into seeming like more of a moron than he was. He's a passionate politician who at least in private isn't afraid to call someone 'bigoted' - his failing was that he lacked the courage to really speak his mind in public.

@Bellalodicci9 Agreed he should have done more. However the current prime minister was quoted many times saying that they should deregulate banking at the time. He didn't support raising house prices that'd be stupid. If you genuinely think someone can be that stupid you cleary don't understand politics.

@JPBStory House prices rose under Labour Gov. as property ownership/inflated prices was the only thing we had left propping up the "Economy". We don't manufacture anything anymore and don't export anything anymore. Gordon Brown knew he had to keep the housing market artificially high in order to minimise Gov debt (eg, a retail unit up for sale on paper valued at £1.1 million through a bank, albeit not sold, looks a whole lot better when balancing the books than if it was valued at £500,000).

@Bellalodicci9 The lack of manufacturing was a result of the 1980s and the shift from manufacturing to commercial businesses for wealth generation. Fair enough Labour did nothing to reverse this and the result of the inflated property market. But they did not create the high pricing, that was a result of people instead of moving houses doing them up and creating overly elaborate houses. That however probably wasn't helped by the lack of affordable houses being built which was their fault.

Also you don't elect the Prime Minister, they're appointed by the Queen, the Prime Minister is simply whoever can command the power of the House of Commons. Churchill during World War 2 was unelected as Prime Minister if you're going to take your view.
