@chicainger by over consumption he means eating too much (i.e.,cheese burgers). in order to find the joke funny, one would have to know what "dying of consumption" means. Consumption is a deadly disease (it's the old name for tuberculosis (TB) that describes how the illness wastes away or consumes its victims). Alistair is saying that his star should be dying of TB not over eating. it's "funny" because it uses the same word (consumption) in two different ways. does that help?
