I don't see this dark but mystic. You can't really tell, what it seeks, that's why you will have the basic feeling, with arrows of full range of emotions to that base.
Meaning, it is your pick, how you see this world.
This music brings up your way of seeing the world and life. As it is it's beautifull opposite and positive.
Wait a min. There's the place called Tuonela (sort of like Hades-the place- of the Greek mythology). Then there's y the river of Tuonela which is kinda like the river Styx of the Greek tales
@TheNatedagreat4 If you have the time you should do some research about Kalevala, a FInnish myth/epic or whatever. This and many others by SIbelius are inspired by them.
"Tuonela = The River of Death" More precisely, Tuonela = Underworld. The river is referred to as the river of Tuoni/Tuonela (Tuoni is the god of the Underworld, but can also mean the Underworld itself, like Hades. Tuonela means "place of Tuoni").
Incredibly beautiful. Thank you so much for this video. Järjettömän upea video - kiitos. Kuka on tehnyt nää kuvat? Todella dalimaisia osa, mutta en tunnista Dalin tai Maigritten teoksiksi. Joten kuka nero nää on koonnut? Jos mä osaisin tehdä videon youtuben niin se olisi tällainen. Kiitos todella paljon tekijälle.... katja...
Wasn't it so that Disney originally wanted to have this as a part of their original Fantasia -movie? And like, they already had some raw material and drawings of the scenes and all. But due to bad economical state of the company they had to cut the movie shorter.
It would've been great to see how this would've been intepreted by the most beautiful cartoon movie ever.
Judging from the ones i have seen before, they are all at least reasonably well-known paintings, mostly from, as Mr. Troll points out, the Surrealist school.... i recognize a couple of Salvador Dalli pieces near the beginning, but beyond that my knowledge of painters of this period completely fails me. Very delightful collection, however - as you point out!!
Now that was rude on so many levels, Simon. I forget to mention the "swan" and I get played Mozart Horn concerto. And guess who know the later add words to said ditty. If they build it he will....... and I lost that....... lol
No offence Financial Co-respondent but I prefer High Fidelity rather than In........
@rodiero That's right, good. And even 'Tuonela' has a meaning: 'Abode of Death, or Death Realm'
- could render it to 'Deathia, Deathton' oe something similar.
So it's the Black River of Death, bit like in the Greek mythology there was the river Styx. For example there's a master of the Death Realm. But Kalevala characters live more in a Stone Age world, compared to the Greek Classic Age (bronze age). Iron has just come to the world of Kalevala (a smith is an important figure in the society).
@timomastosalo Hmmmm - stone age? Definitely not - it is early iron age (and perhaps late bronze age) stuff. Of course these ages were more recent in these parts of the world than they were e.g., in Greece.
@EneriGiilaan Well, Iron is there all over - so they are in Iron Age. But it seems like a 'high invention' of the time, it's so hot topic, that a smith is a central character. No wonder, metal - iron especially - have to have been a big technical leap in a society of the age. But the shamanistic passages show an older world, stone age hunting & fishing culture, which is strongly present in Iron Age of the Kalevala.
@timomastosalo Considering that there was at least about thousand years of bronze-age before the iron-age (in Finland) I still think it would be quite extraordinary to find any actual stone-age elements in the iron-age poetry. Note that there is nothing preventing the shamanism or hunting or fishing in bronze-age or even iron-age culture per se (they are present even today in some form or another). And of course the stone-age people here probably didn't even speak any kind of 'Finnish' at all.

in music what you hear is more important than what you know about it. i don't care the story behind the name of this composition (even thought i know it, because of comprehensive school)
@Hucleberry88 I find it interesting that perhaps you don't know the true meaning of love yet you revel in it.Knowing is not always feeling.A drop of honey,a bee from heaven..does not an emotion make.....
I was honored in high school--42 years ago--to play the Swan's English Horn part in concert. Our orchestral director, who was of Finnish descent, took the time to teach me about Jean Sibelius, about the myths behind the Swan, and to instill in me the passion to present the fullest possible depth of emotion in the performance. It was a life-altering experience for me, and one at which I still look fondly after nearly half a century.
Well, I would feel gay if I'd like a guy who is watching his own muscles all the time like 50 cent or eminem...If there's something which I don't feel gay is with classic music.
Beautiful. I would have like it better if you had stayed on the artwork longer instead of using the graphic equilizer as filler. But still very beautiful.

Personaly i think it is too dark, since in our culture, " tuonela " is liberation for better life, not punishment.
