  • Miles Gracies! I was honestly moved each time I listen to this !!!

  • just unbelievable

  • amazing final...

  • Callas + Tebaldi = CABALLÉ

  • Calla + Tebaldi= CABALLÉ

  • Dios santo bendito.

  • I think in this last note is the whole character of Liu. This IS it - Verismo. You know why? Because this "crazy" note is the only vocally adequate and true way of portrayal a woman with a slave mentality, eager to serve to the point of self sacrifice, so in love and so deeply in despair that she kills herself!

Doesn't that sound a bit Verdian? Caballe is the only one who makes Liu a verismo character. The character has to be obsessed and possessed. So is that note. It explains the whole Liu.

  • @trumansf smartest youtube comment ever

  • Magnifica! Bravisima!

  • IMPRESSIONANTE!!!!

  • the singing is just gorgeous...but she deserved a better conductor

  • Listening to this wonderfull woman sing gives me so much pleasure. How she held that pitch, and then got even more high is just fantastic.WOW is all I can say.

    Thank you,

    Henry

  • Sublime, paradisiaca, divina!

  • This is the ultimate performance you need to hear if you want to hear the best interpretation of "signore ascolta"

  • Listen to renata Tebaldi.......

  • Listen to renata Tebaldi.......

  • WOW check out the screams from the audience...brings me to tears every time...would give my right arm to have been there!!!

  • she is outdone only by her own studio version for decca: the Mehta/Sutherland/Pavarotti set was my first Turandot and i'll never forget the first time listening to the final note going from pianissimo to piano to forte and back again

    brava!

  • ok she sings one phrase in one breath thats 20 seconds long.... all in one breath!

  • Caballe é a VOZ!!!!

  • @bconsitt YES! I've been saying it for ages! Her pianissimi is peerless.

  • Very beautiful, I am your greatest fan....

  • Does anyone know the english translation? It's a tough to find...

  • Her ability to start with just a little sliver of a sound and then crescendo into this huge voice is just amazing. Her control and ability to sustain notes at the top of her range for an inhuman amount of time... Its like the video of her 75 Orange Casta Diva, holding out the final notes after an elaborate trill. Its like, where does she get this air!? Well I love her, thats my point lol.

  • Perfect.

  • Her breath support is unsurpassed.

Even Sutherland, Price, Callas would've taken a breath somewhere along that B.

  • 2:26 - 2:46 one breath!

the crescendo on the b-flat is divine!

  • Most beautiful!!! Hundered stars :))))

  • Beautifully, beautifully interpreted! Her piano voice is like no other!

  • Never before have I been so profoundly breathtaken.

  • MC often makes a choice to make tone instead of singing the text. This is normal in the bel canto but sort of against the usual "rules" and "traditions" of verismo. Sometimes artists need to make a brave artistic choice. Some may think she is indulgent, but I disagree, she is offering us her concept of what the most beautiful way to interpret this aria. It stands for me as a most successful interpretation.

  • @catface1965 and you are so right...she is the muse of emotion...

  • Here she is not on stage singing each lyric to tell a story. Here she is in concert and we are listening to a voice as a musical instrument. It is more about the sound than the words. Perhaps this is why she is taking artistic license here. It was a wonderful voice and thank you for sharing this clip.

  • wow! that last crescendo is chilling :) i agree gorgeous voice

  • the crescendo is not written by Puccini. Chilling all, ah ah.

ll prefer listen to Renata. May be Victoria would have sung much better, but she should not, .. forbidden.

  • Montse in 1975 had already a beautiful voice. She sings great, but never articulate in the high register, all are pure vocals..In Puccini i, in which it's important the diction. Caballe who had the most beautiful pianissimos l ever heard, does not sing the filato at the end. Why? Anyways she is great.... for long.

  • Gruberova also has perfect pianissimos

  • Awesome. How does she do it? The woman is a goddess!

  • My jaw just dropped at the last crescendo!!

  • This aria was written for her. After hearing her singing it cannot hear anyone else. Superb!

  • great!

  • This went straight to my heart, my brain didnt stand a chance!

  • It was an amazing interpretation and that last note...yeah like no one can do that..but what was up with those men screaming after she finished? They sounded vicious..one of them sounding like he was hurling, lol. Not very polite.

  • My friend, they are the ones who "got it".

  • I understand the enthusiasm but dont you think they were being just a bit overzealous? That last note created an ambiance that those ppl screaming instantly broke..its like they were just waiting for her to finish..the illusion is completely gone...showing support is fine but you don't have to shout in order to "get it" but hey to each his/her own

  • the, Ha, pieta is a long unfinshed piano.. but also with words.

  • this is honestly one of the best things ive ever heard, ive never been massive on caballe as a general rule but this is amazing. that last note was incredible.

  • A superb interpretation (despite a shakey orchestra)! And my god that last note had such spin right through the crescendo to the very end!! Brava!!

  • this is my absolute FAVORITE interpretation. I am in love with Caballe's exquisite voice, I want to do a masterclass with her so badly! Anyone know what she's up to these days?

  • UTTERLY FLAWLESS!

  • zum Niederknien und Weinen schön!

  • ECCELLENTE! EXCELLENT!!!

    Non ci sono altri commenti!!!

    Finale MONDIALE!!!

  • Oh. My. God. I had tears in my eyes when she started, but that ending!!!

  • Will any soprano be as good as her, someday?

    Bravo!

  • I loved the extended note at the end too ! She is la mejor !

  • LA MEJOR

  • I loved the extended note at the end..she held that ( i think Bb) for like 20 seconds..that was nothing short of awesome...did you hear that bravo at the end? She sung the hell out of that aria.

  • She is awesome, Monstrous Caballe

  • To show what Puccini wrote, the printed vocal score of this aria is posted.

  • Listen to two complete versions which continue into Non piangere Liu and you will understand why Caballe's disregard for the text and humungous last note are so inappropriate. With her gorgeous voice and skill she ought to be the ideal Liu but sadly she uses that note purely as empty display. The text is not at all hard to sing here and is vital to the drama.

Perhaps she is better as Liu in the full version of the opera? Tebaldi/Bjorling and Scotto/Corelli are posted.

  • it's a recital. Don't be a pain in the ass.

  • The last note may be amazing but it is not what is written by Puccini in the score. Liu's top note should crescendo then cut off, and the orchestra plays the closing phrase. It makes dramatic sense that way as it says Liu collapses to the ground exhausted and sobbing.

    Grande Caballe.

    Gerardeus.

  • I read the libretto and I don't remember any "AH, PIETA!" in it.

  • As Forrest Gump's mother always said, "stupid is as stupid does". I suppose the comments you've received have shown that you said something that most folks consider... well... stupid. It happens to the best of us, so just move on.

  • Yeah... being lazy gets you a very long career and thunderous applause.

  • impresionante final

    no tengo palabras

I love you Montserrat.

  • Her breath is unfinishable...

    Brava, Montserrat!...

  • she is divine...so touching

  • espectacular!! caballe bravisimaaaa!!

  • wao!!! Que buena es esta mujer!!! El final es extremadamente bueno!!!

  • It's not flat. It's not slow. What it is is the most fabulous piece of singing!!

Increible. BRAVA!

  • OK - the ending is out of this world - quite incredible. But let's be real folks. The entire piece is too slow and flat. Even the miraculous ending is a little flat.

  • It's your ear that's flat....

  • sono d'accordo

  • My God, who else but Caballe can take a perfectly produced, pianissimo B-flat, hang on it forever (or so it seems, LOL!), and then expand it to a gorgeous forte? Monserrat you're truly unique and we love you!

  • Bravíssima !

She can make us cry with her voice and interpretation !

    Bravíssima !

  • If someone can come and say "she sang like this, etc." and we answer "ah, ok, understood", but it is totally impossible. We must watch and enjoy, there's no words that can explain this!!!

  • What seperated great divas like Caballe, Callas, Tebaldi, etc from today's wannabes was the uniqueness of their voices. You always know when they are singing. Boy, do we miss them all! Brava, Caballe!

  • Absolutely beautiful. She interpreted this role so well.

  • oh my god...

  • Montserrat, eterna...

  • Best Liu!

  • This woman is incredible! Amazing! Brava indeed!

  • each time i hear this i cannot believe that a human can make this noise, beyond beauty, beyond art, amazing!!!!

  • ah!...ah! ...ah!!!!

  • Oh, My!... That ending... I just love Montse!!! Thaks so much for posting this video. Amazing!

  • *bows to the goddess*

erin non regge piu dopo a questo... *is dead, happily dead*

  • ah!!! my god what a voice, excellent the best ever unsurpassable.
