This style of playing the guitar is known as fingerstyle. It has it's roots in the flamenco style techniques and the country/blues of the late 19th and early 20th century. If you are interested in checking out other great fingerstyle players you should check out Tommy Emmanuel, Adrian Legg, Marcel Dadi, Brad "Buster B" Jones, and Chet Atkins (just to name a few of the best).
