  • My fave film of all time. Feckin classic.

  • Love the idea of a fan club, even though I live in Australia. Please keep me informed!

  • This plus "Rejoice in the Sun" are my favourite Baez songs ever. Of course, it's also because of the film, which was a generation ahead of its time. It's the best pro-environmental SF film ever made.

  • I look upon Lowell as a hero. I grew up on Silent Running and I NEVER looked on Lowell's values as lame or misplaced. It's funny how this important film was overlooked with all this chaos in our evironmental policies. Silent Running is one of my top tens.

  • you will have to cope with the somewhat annoying Freeman Lowell (acting by Bruce Dern) . This sad film could probably teach children that all hope is gone. I don't buy into it beeing pro eco-terrorism. Existential environmentalism explained, simple.

  • My best film of all time!!..bar none!

Bruce Dern is an excellent actor!

  • ♥ .

  • Great film!

  • I saw this movie when I was eight(1978) 9 O'clock tv special. I cried and never forgot how much the movie moved me as a child. I saw the movie in the video store a couple years ago and I figured it would be cool to watch again after 30 years. Well I cried again. I guess some things never change no matter how old you are and how much time has passed.

  • @vanillaexplosion99 Man you are just the craziest piece of shit I have ever seen on the internet. You really think I am spy for the US?You give yourself way too much importance. Considering the message you sent me you must be an old ugly fat guy completely paranoid and certainly egomaniac to think the US gov is after you. If you don't like my guitar playing that's your right but you don't have to be so arrogant. And no I am not in Switzerland, I am in France dickhead. You almost had it right.

  • @vanillaexplosion99 I usually never respond either to the socially disordered people who leave me the kind of message you did but you are so way out of line I couldn't miss it. For someone claiming to be in his 40's you really act like a shit. come on, grow up. "Dude you suck at guitar and I can say that with ease for I am a very very serious guitarist. " How clever that line is for instance, for a 15 year-old acneic teenager it's alright but if you are 40 go kill yourself. Pathetic

  • this song is passionate and beautiful. I could easily fall in love when this song is playing. Women such as joan B, Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell have been so underated through the years, why?

  • We are in the process of an ever increasingly, fast, spiraling decent, into self destruction of ourselves and the planet. And nothing or no one can stop us.Enjoy the ride, its going to get rough. We are not intelligent enough to halt the process as we exhaust and pollute the planet..Glad I wont be here for the end...or will I ?????

  • Beautiful voice, beautiful message, and, just by accident I watched it on Christmas day. It made it really touching. Thanks!!!

    Miguel

  • I began to lose respect for Ben Bova when he panned this movie in a review. From the comments he made, I got the impression he didn't really watch the film.

  • 21.12.2012 not dewey - jeffrie

  • beautiful song by Joan Baez fabulous film with Bruce Dern, and a message that no one will heed alas

  • I saw this movie when I was somewhere around eight years old and I've never forgotten the message it told me and that it also did its best to tell the world way back then. It's been a long time since the late 70's when I saw the movie back then til 2010 today to finally see a larger majority of the world actually caring about the ecosystem of our planet and how it affects every one of us now and for future generations to come along after we've lived our lives.

  • One of my all-time favorite films. As a child and teen I thought by the time I am Freeman Lowell's age, we will have not gone the way of the film. We will do better. We will not destroy God's creation. Now, I am bitter, very bitter. I came back from the white powdered glass beaches and blue green water of Destin, Florida last month. Truly beautiful. What's it going to be like now?! Hideous blobs of tar bespoiling and bespotting the water and sand?! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • Crappy movie & "message," but Joan sings it so well.

  • Epic astronaut psychological screening fail.

  • I always thought this was a response to 2001: A Space Odyssey, released four years earlier. Instead of the cold and obedient David Bowman, the idealistic and emotional Freeman Lowell rebels and instead of destroying Hal 9000, tries to 'humanise' the astrodroids. Likewise the alternative 'stargate' through Saturn's rings 'reveals' nothing, no aliens, no monoliths. Humankind, as represented by Lowell must be its own saviour, the only redemption comes by keeping the plants and animals alive

  • i just like the final image of robots/tech taking life out into space. humans were a temporary transitional form.. but this arrogant species likes to think it's the pinacle of evolution.

  • WOW! Do I start, with your clear self loathing or your blaring scientific illiteracy? Misanthropism is a good thing? Yeah, misanthropes such as Stalin, Mao, Hussein, Muhammad, and, the little paper hanger did a BANG up job of saving the world. Lose the PEOPLE and all's jake! Want to stand with those bums? Fine. You'd have made a PERFECT brown shirt. 'Got all the traits. Overpopulation is IMPOSSIBLE! When there are too many of a species, nature stops them from multiplying. Every time.

  • and thats my precisely my point.

self preservation.. i dont want "nature" to step in to regulate numbers (pandemic) because it will be INDISCRIMINATE

    as will warfare

my conviction is that we need population control, just look st at the chart, it must slow down ASAP .. we need to reverse it really.

my best favourite suggestion is sterilization for car-drivers/meat-eaters

& yes i think it's misanthropes that can turn their negativity to good by educating all you blind optimist over-breeders.

  • Im 62 years old and have loved music ever since I could remember listening to it, and I tell you I have never heard a voice as pure in its measure as that belonging to this woman.

  • it's a misanthropic film; and its message becomes more relevant as each day passes

  • So misanthropism is a GOOD thing? Strange idea. 'Has a menacing 1930s ring to it. We all remember where THAT led.

    Norm

  • you're in an overcrowded world.

people who love people are more likely to multiply (then delude themselves its possible to multiply more)

Misanthropy may save your species, ironically. it takes a misanthrope's convictions to regulate your numbers.

see recent bbc horizon programme on iplayer "how many people can live on planet earth".. attenborough explains it better than me

  • Great film-The recent film 'Moon' tried to recapture this but didn't come close

  • Einer der geilsten Filme die es jemals gab

  • The ships were in deep space around Saturn. Why did it take so long for him to find out that the plants were dying because of a lack of sunlight?

  • Because he got his degree from the same university as did the people who WROTE this stupid hippie screed!

    Norm

  • (Sigh) It's personal opinion. I watch all kinds movies. "Old" isn't the same as "dated."

The theme to "Flashdance" is dated. I enjoyed it more in the 80s than I do now.

Joan Baez is a remnant of the hippie movement. No reference to Joan's talent, but a lot of sixties stuff is dated and silly.

  • You sound dated and silly to me! good music is timeless

  • I'm with you, Bro. Beautiful lady, wonderful, God given talent, but what a waste. She must have been very sheltered and easily led. Too bad.

    Norm

  • @theshadow1932 She was. She still is; supports "the One."

  • @OhTerr I know. It's a shame. With all of her charm and talent, she could have been a true force for good in the world, if only she'd taken the right path. What a loss.

    Norm

  • I like the conservation pledge on the wall...it is a shame we as mankind do not abide by it.

  • one of my favorite songs in a movie:-)

  • Joans singing is heart warming, yes it dates the film but in a charming way. I would not have done it any different.

  • No offense to Joan, but I like the movie, not so much her singing.

    Especially now. It seems dated.

  • I like Joan's contribution to the film. The organic quality of the music (not to mention the dome interiors) contrasts nicely with the hard-edged design of the ship and hardware.

I love ironic contrasts like that. It works for me. It's powerful.

  • When I was a kid I was devastated when one robot was injured & the other was left alone to tend to the remaining dome. It really broke my heart!

It's interesting, I've always enjoyed the film, but the last time I saw it Bruce Dern was getting on my nerves with his psycho looks and speeches.

  • One great movie! This takes me [and my brother] way back!!! That habitat ship held what was left of Earth's ecosystem. Isn't that right bro?

  • I don´t know the film, but the song is great

  • IF YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO LIKES THIS MUSIC, YOU WILL LOVE THE FILM. ITS OLD BUT ITS STILL GOT IT. JUST ASK THE ynotD BROTHERS !

  • wonderful

  • Very welcome addition! One of those habitat ships made it on Battlestar Galactica FYI.

  • Yes, start a fan club. Sounds like a great idea.

  • ANYONE want to help start a SILENT RUNNING FAN CLUB?

This film is just TOO good. Imagine if we had enough members and could gather a crowd in LA and screen it on a big screen in a theater, and invite Douglas Trumbal, Dern etc..!

heck we'd have a great time even if we couldn't get the celebs from the film but you never know.

Send me a message if you're interested.

  • Denmark - Europe calling. I am in. Where do I sign up for the fanclub - of the best Scifi-film ever? It has a relevance and a poetic beauty unsurpassable! Regards: Martin

  • England calling-i'm in. Wonderful film, beautifully done. Think it was the first film that I actually cried at... Let me know on the fan-club? Rob

  • "Look on the wall behind you. Look at that little girl's face. I know you've seen it. But you know what she's never going to be able to see? She's never going to be able to see the simple wonder of a leaf in her hand. Because theres not going to be any trees. Now you think about that.", Freeman Lowell - Somwhere orbiting Saturn in 1972.

  • I love that quote. Especially the "I know you've seen it" part.

  • @ICLAIMTHISNAME is this also super gay?

  • Beautiful. Now watch Soylent Green. The sequence in which Sol goes home!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes thank you for adding the text of the conservation pledge as a video annotation. What kind of tree hugger has the conservation pledge taped up next to his bed? It made an impression on me many years ago. I wish our whole country would just turn back from 70 mph speed limits and V8 engines and just quietly rethink the whole culture of gluttonous, ruinous consumption.

  • Maybe watch what other countrys do, here are cars build even with 3 Cylinders, and 120 hp.

That cars can run 140KM/h and you are building cars with V8's and you are only allowed to drive 90Km/h... Wrong world...

  • This is a great song from a very interesting movie; thank you for uploading this.

  • Yeah it wasn't very readable so I added it in.

  • Wonderful movie and music. When I hear those finger cymbals, I think of the song "Lady" by Styx.

  • Yes a very good film but sadly did not get the recognition it deserved. Not enough lazer guns and explosions for it to get noted! I saw it when I was about 5 and i always remmember the lonely little robot at the end with the watering can while Joan Baez sings in the back ground. It was only in my teens did I understand why Bruce Dern blew up the remaining space craft to preseve the final forest. Brilliant film. Fantastic story too.

  • Yup, I love youtube. You think of a song you want to hear and seearch and here it is. A haunting song from a wonderful movie. Thanks for posting.

  • thanks so much for putting this up. I saw this film when it came out, and it still has a huge effect on me. the music is great.

  • Strange,, every time when i see this movie , i like it more,, and sinds i just saw it for about the 10th time i can say that this must be The best Sci-Fi Movie ever made.

  • A must seen!

  • This movie was outstanding for the 70's. They all could care less about saving the forest of our earth EXCEPT for Bruce Dern and the little robots. The music really fit the movie.

  • This is my favourite song from Joan Baez. I love the movie too. This is just pure magic.
