oh wow peeps. this was a friggin tv show. tv is NOT reality. nothing back then or in the 50s was so goody goody as presented in this sitcom. there was crime, back alley killings, juvenile delinquency, jim crow voting laws..... get a grip on yourselves
Loved the Rifleman (I purchased about 80 episodes on ebay) and still can't get enough. Always had a life lesson for Mark at the end of each show and portrayed a very affectionate close relationship between father and son. Not to mention he wore those jeans with tucked in white shirt so well --while cracking that rifle! What more could you want from a TV western!
Now if we could only isolate the Lucas McCane gene and inject every father with it, all evil would be eradicated from the earth in a matter of days, and every boy would respect his father again.
I saw Connors final resting place in the San Fernando Valley. I did not know his first name was Kevin as it was on his grave. The palce is Mission deSan Fernando Cemetary near Thousand Oaks, CA. Love the Rifleman.
Chuck Connors gives that look that says "I'd kick your ass and make you like it". They're playing reruns of these on Saturday morning now - makes me feel like a kid again.
1:09 video: opening theme and closing credits from 1958-63 TV western The Rifleman; title role played by Chuck Connors.
Chuck Connors (April 10, 1921 – November 10, 1992) was an American actor, writer, professional basketball, and baseball player. His best known role from his forty-year film career was Lucas McCain in the 1960's ABC hit Western series "The Rifleman."
Now we have "Two and a Half Men" with Charlie Sheen's maid talking about him "spraying his hose all over the place" due to a sexual fraught that he is in. How things have changed.
As I recall there were a lot of gimmicks used in weaponry for TV's Western heroes back then but Chuck Connor's 'Rifleman' certainly had the coolest weapon of all. The thing became a virtual machine gun when he got into rapid fire mode and then he had his trademark 360 degree twirl of the rifle via that round lever that brought a whole new level of cool to the classic fancy flip of the pistol into the holster done by other gunslingers. I enjoyed every episode of this show when I was a kid.

As a kid, I thought Conners was the most righteous western star on TV, though I though Rowdy Yates had an exceptional presence, too. I can only laugh now at that first shot there... This Mighty Man striding down Main Street, stroking his trigger, ejaculating BULLETS!!! How much more Freudian could it possibly be?
It was a great show about a tough guy who was also a good Father. Right and wrong were clearly seen. The bad guys were usually sent to where they belonged instead of being tied up in an expensive and ineffective legal system.
@bertly71 I remember a TV news clip about Chuck Conners going to Russia to visit Breznev. He brought him a gift of a matched pair of gold inlaid Mossberg 338 Rifles as Brez' loved bear hunting & was likewise fond of nice guns. Brez' thanked him profusely & welcomed him like a true friend
Imagine something like that happening in today's politically correct world. Today the State Dept would have had him arrested
That was true "diplomacy" ... man to man in an era of sanity today long gone
@sparkyization Thanks for sharing that. I would never have known such a great story. Your observations regarding how that would have played out today are correct.
@bertly71 chuck conners played a villian in a lot of movies and tv shows the big country roots police story soylant green the rifleman[thats a litle joke in one episode he plays a guy that looks like the rifleman and wants to kill the rifleman ]
Was 12 when this series premiered. Chuck Connors can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with "Dirty Harry" Clint Eastwood, "Sundance" Robert Redford" and "Chris"-Val Kilmer in "Heat" when it comes to Hollywood Gunplay. A true BadA**.The music is very similar to Aaron Copeland, refreshing and pure Americana. Very enjoyable posting - Thank you !
Great comment! Could I please add one more to your list? Alan Ladd in the movie Shane. Old movie but done incredibly well, a must see if you like cowboy movies. Thanks.
@CoasteRon your right this "country and western" music is most definately influenced by the dean of american composers aaron copeland keith emerson named his son aaron johnny crawford had 2 hits cindys birthday and rumours
Such a great theme song, bringing back so many wonderful memories of Lucas McCain in North Fork. Always bailing out Sheriff Micah! Thank you for posting this.
this is my all time favorite tv western. thank you for posting both the opening and closing credits. i watched it in reruns when i was very young and then again every afternoon when i was a teen. i haven't seen it much since the 70's. i have read that sam peckenpah either developed or created the series. i know he wrote and directed some of the early episodes. GREAT SHOW! thanks again.
this is one of my dad's favorite shows. He got so excited when we showed it to him! In fact, just the theme song brings back my childhood and how we screamed when it came on-now its just cute to make him happy!
If you have any full episdoes, im sure he would love it!
