Mailer is impressive here. He showed courage and fought well against a drug-crazed Torn armed with a hammer. A shot with a hammer can fracture a skull easily, it's lethal. Most people would have run, Mailer went in and clinched and disarmed him and took him down, and would have had top position too, were it not for the slope. Takes a lot of guts to do that after you've been cracked by a hammer twice, especially by a younger fitter man with insane eyes.
The close ups of Torn's face are absolutely chilling. He looks like Kinski if Kinski got a box of meth.
I think the scene was planned, but didn't go the way Mailer planned, or Torn just got tired of Mailer's shit that he really went after him (torn's drug intake contributed to the mayhem obviously).
Some of the shots are surprisingly well framed by the cameraman, so I think this scene was staged, but something horribly went wrong.
Regarding Mailer's lack of sharp retort, I think it was the unprovoked nature of the attack that left him confused and at a loss for words- otherwise, I'm sure he could've gone toe to toe with Torn. That, and he had just been conked with a hammer. Torn, however, was full of piss and vinegar (and LSD) and obviously had no problem improvising dialogue.

Nah they were'nt on acid.The story behind this is that Norman Mailer was directing this movie 'Maidstone' and Rip Torn was apparently very mad at him for his direction of the movie, so he got out a hammer and hit him with it..The fight is a real fight and the cameras happened to be rolling when all this happened, so they put it in the actual movie.
Popping RX speed (Dextroamphetamine), Rip hadn't slept in days. One could say he was "spun"; amphetamine induced psychosis. In this fatigued state, Rip took a heavy dose of LSD, and the production crew knew it. That's why they continued filming, even though principal photography had wrapped the day before. Just look at him...."baby" , he's tripping hard.
If anyone wants to see Rip really go off, check out a movie called "Coming Apart", which is available on DVD from Kino Video. Id post segments of it here, but most of them are way too sexually graphic for YouTube.
Rip Torn now does not look a thing like he did in 1971 -- facial structure entirely different (he looked like Dean Stockwell crossed with Bruce Dern back then).
Others from that era still look like the same people -- just older -- like Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson.

The close ups of Torn's face are absolutely chilling. He looks like Kinski if Kinski got a box of meth.
I think the scene was planned, but didn't go the way Mailer planned, or Torn just got tired of Mailer's shit that he really went after him (torn's drug intake contributed to the mayhem obviously).
Some of the shots are surprisingly well framed by the cameraman, so I think this scene was staged, but something horribly went wrong.

Regarding Mailer's lack of sharp retort, I think it was the unprovoked nature of the attack that left him confused and at a loss for words- otherwise, I'm sure he could've gone toe to toe with Torn. That, and he had just been conked with a hammer. Torn, however, was full of piss and vinegar (and LSD) and obviously had no problem improvising dialogue.

Nah they were'nt on acid.The story behind this is that Norman Mailer was directing this movie 'Maidstone' and Rip Torn was apparently very mad at him for his direction of the movie, so he got out a hammer and hit him with it..The fight is a real fight and the cameras happened to be rolling when all this happened, so they put it in the actual movie.

Rip Torn now does not look a thing like he did in 1971 -- facial structure entirely different (he looked like Dean Stockwell crossed with Bruce Dern back then).
Others from that era still look like the same people -- just older -- like Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson.
