what pisses me off is that it would be impossible for just two pilots, one of whom has never seen combat action, to shoot down/take down 10 planes between them. also only 1 pilot got off the groudn at pearl harbour and he only shot 3 planes down,for which he was awarded the congressional medal of honour, and he had flown in the battle of britain.
Those pilots had the drop on the Japanese aircraft. Given the element of surprise and the P40s considerable firepower and durability, and its forgiving flying characteristics, it becomes even more apparent as to how two "rookie" pilots could get such a tally.
Actually, on Dogfights, they showed a pilot of an SBD that outwitted and downed three Japanese Zeros... not a bad feat there... just a random thought while I was watching this video.
There was also a Canadian Spitfire pilot who shot down five planes in a single mission. OK, so not his first combat sortie, but still a fine achievement....

The two pilots who DID take off during the Pearl Harbor attack (Taylor and Welch) DID shoot down seven planes, albeit in two sorties.
They did not have combat experience, but they did have combat TRAINING - dogfight practice etc. So how is it NOT possible for them to do this???

Which were shot down by friendly AA. Actaully no aircraft were up at Pearl Harbor a few got up from neighboring airfields and did a little damage.
