  • Sounds better with a bit more pace.

  • this debate about speed seems a bit strange to me.. this version even sounds a bit slow in my opinion!

  • anyone who says it's going too fast, in films for some reason I don't know music is often sped up, no idea why but listen to the soundtrack and it'll be different

  • * prefer

  • I peter it played at about this speed, anything to slow isn't good in my opinion

  • Pete Poslethwaite clearly had some musical skill. Even though he was a mainstream actor, his conducting of 'Grimley' was very convincing. What a man!

  • 1:46 Best part !

  • that oboe melody should have been supported by the tuba

  • @picaticatara What kind of Oboe melody? Btw: I have played 5 different transcribitions of this music piece ;) so there are many different versions and impressions from band bot Brass and Winds all over the globe

  • @sokki88 this is brass band there are no oboes!

  • oboe??

No oboes in a brass band!!

  • Isn't it a soprano cornet? No oboes in brass bands...

  • What movie is this from?

  • @COLINBAUMANN Brassed Off

  • A tad fast. While 120bpm is generally considered marching pace, not so for central european (german, austrian, czech) march music. Roughly 108-112 is preferable; 'twas Napoléon who decided to march his troops at 120bpm to outmaneuver his enemies (move faster) and the Americans later mimicked him but it's far from a universal truth. Since the 'Florentiner' is also for street performance, this is a little rushed (doesn't help the movements of the characters don't synch).

  • @Ikonicre,

I don't think your right. I play in a marchin band an we do play all our marches 120 or even faster.

search "Adest Musica Sassenheim WMC 2009 Marching"

  • @ramonnie007 Just because it's the standard these days, doesn't mean it's right. Read up on marching music and you'll find out. 120bpm is the MODERN tempo. I'd refer you to the March (music) page on wikipedia, there undoubtedly is one. Fučík was a classical style composer. There's a recording from Tokyo's Kosei Wind Orchestra on youtube which nails the tempo. You don't play a 'deliberate' march at warp 9 (120bpm) when sitting down and it's much stronger when paced at 108-112 while marching.

  • @Ikonicre,

I don't think it was Fucik's meaning to play this remarkable piece at 112 bpm, but I do understand your opinion.

But just because Fucik was a classical composer doesn't mean he couldn't write marches to be played quicker than normal. (quickmarch) witch is also for street performance.

  • @ramonnie007 He grew up in a culture with a long, long tradition of ~110bpm marching music. If he lived some 40-50 years later he might've written it at that pace, unlike Blankenburg, Fučík didn't write marches at Stars and Stripes Forever speed. When the tempo is not as intended, a piece is adapted for use, it'd be wrong to assume that is the correct speed, as long as one realizes it's an adaptation. Analogous to the ever-increasing tempos used for Händel's 1st coronation anthem..

  • When I last played this, we took it a _lot_ slower. :-)

  • a lot of something Fast !!!!

  • Dare I say best instrument family (Brass)? :D And proud to be a part of it xD

  • gwon get on bus

  • I'm having a bit or an argument with the conductor of my Silver Band at the moment, regards the tempo of this piece. The Band have just done Brassed Off in the theatre, and playing with no conductor we can take it close to this speed and get away with it. (the conductor had nothing to do with the show!) Now he wants to do it in concert (without having done any of the rehearsing!) and wants to take it obscenely slowly . . .arrrgh!!! Which is right? Fast or slow? Its driving me nuts!

  • Sounds like the conductor had to take whee!

  • I think it's very likely that you aleady enjoy other compositions by Julius Fucik, one of them being "Entrance of the Gladiators." It's a pity that many people associate it with circus music and dismiss it.

  • "Bang goes the deportment prize, anyway!" brilliant! I'm sad enough to know every word to this film :D literally

  • I initially thought you had made a mistake with the word "deportment" and I chose to ignore it but after a little thought it hit me...........it means the same as "comportment" which is what I thought you meant. Wonderful language, English isn't it?

  • I saw the band last night in Wakefield - absolutely brilliant live.

  • I see you hate your politicians as much as we Americans do. Politicians are just a bunch of scrofulous little assholes and the ones we have now are spending us into oblivion....The band is great, by the way.

  • finally, an american who's heard of decent films and music :) thankyou, my faith is restored!

  • I'm a VERY minor musician who plays in a community orchestra as a hobby and I appreciate the hard work and dedication of the musicians in this video. A suggestion; Find Alison Balsom on YouTube and enjoy her virtuosity as well. She has become one of Englands national treasures IMO. In a completely different direction you might enjoy the talent of Dave Hartley who posts videos as "davepedalsteel". It's quite different but exhibits dedication and hard work too. He's from Thetford. Thanks.

  • Grimethorp Collery Band !!!

the best brass band ever !!

  • super, lekker tempo!

  • Nobody cares.

  • Who cares if it has been speeded up, it's still a beautiful piece of music.

  • Preciosa Tara Fitzgerald

  • Bonita película, "Tocando al viento"

  • too fast... polecam Wilamowice :)

  • Its not to fast, its going in that speed.

  • @sokki88 agreed

  • @sokki88 It's faster than most high school level versions.

  • DONT VOTE LABOUR THEY HATE THE WORKING CLASS ask them lads at vaxshall and leyland vans

  • yorksmilkchurns you are so right brown the clown and labour are not for the working class anymoor just for the rich and the snobs in the south up north we dont have any one . it as all gone blue now thanks to brown the clown all to you lad keep up the good work and as they say FUCK EM ALL

  • der marsch sollte maestoso gespielt werden, das is mir zu allegro, obwohl das trio trotzdem sehr sanft und schön rüberkommt

  • Good film and a very well played rendition of The Florentiner March, although most of it is played at too fast a tempo. If played any faster it could be classified as a circus "Screamer". A piece of trivia: Fucik subtitled this march "Grande Marcia Italiana" as it is my understanding he wrote this march to honor the people of Florence.

  • You might find that most of the pieces in the film have been speeded up from the original soundtrack recording.

  • You will find that the music has been sped up from the original soundtrack recording

  • Hey up lads brown is using the london police as is own personal army dont go down there they hate yorkshire lads

    hinbekommst ?

  • yehhhhh i come from halifax woop woop XD

  • Pity the "flgelhorn player" is fingering completely out of context. Love this one nevertheless...

  • ah but she pays f it in orangejuice almost perfect in that me n ma mates studied it lol x

  • omg! piece hall! i go there and play an xams concer [ skelmanthorpe b band:P ] i love this film, any fellow sop player out there?!

  • Perhaps they're playing it too fast, but its because they can! Sounds great, and the movie was brilliant!

    cheers.

  • Thanks for posting awesome music

  • Hi, I'm from the Czech republic - native country of Julius Fučík. I have played this marsch for years on my euphonium with band and the tempo is OK. The piece is written in tempo 120 - quick marsch ( it's a concert marsch ). So, if you could play it in this tempo, it's corresponding. If you couldn't, play it slower but it wouldn't have an good effect. This recording is on my opinion so good.

  • Hi Czech guy . this is a great film to view hope you get to see it in it's entirity . it's a very good film based on true events here in UK

  • Fucik was a great composer, and this march is ever the real composition,

120 tempo is okee, and....... the last 32 measures for the piccolo-part.

Heavently to play and listening. Examination piece I think

  • Too fast, needs to be slower to shine this one. Bad editing too, it's clear Pete Postlethwaith doesn't synch with the music, which of course was brought in from elsewhere. Hinders the scene in my opinion, though I'm sure Pete's doing his best.

  • viel zu schnell

  • they were only havin a joke steinwaygrande1 u dik head

  • Go Fuck yourself you moron

  • Wow, un poco zu schnell in my opinion !

Ce n'est pas du Rossini mais cela reste agréable à écouter...

  • i play in a brass band in austria and we play this march too, but much slower!

  • There was no SEX no DRUGS and no ROCK and Roll your gormless brainless moron. This movie was based on actual facts after Margaret Thatcher came to power in the 1970s - 1980s She was responsible for smashing the Trade Unions and thumping the living dayligts out of the Argentinians in the Falklands War in 1982

  • Sex, drugs and rock and roll eh girls? is a quote from the movie, so who's brainless moron now eh?

  • amama is right...it IS a quote from the movie.

  • A wonderful piece of music and a great film, so the actors are not musicians? who really cares? the music is still fantastic.

  • Nevertheless,a stunning piece of music.

  • The problem with this film is that anyone watching who does not know better will think that we travel to contests dressed in stage uniforms and carrying instruments without cases. Also, the "test pieces" are of the type that any good band would expect to sight-read.

  • nice piece of music!

  • You should hear this played by the Berliner Philarmoniker.

  • I have heard it and have the CD of this played by the Berliner Philarmoniker plus the Band of The Royal Marines - just superb

  • this piece is fantastic a bugga 2 play but i love it!

  • i love this film you can't call your self a bandsmen/bandswoman unless you have seen this film

our bands uniforms are the same colour as that but with silver :)

    xxxx keeep it brass xxxx

  • whats with the sudden cut at 3.29???????????????? You didnt let the solo cornet finish.

  • While I love the movie, and the music is superbly played... I must say that I will always find it very difficult to watch the "actors" attempt to look like they are playing their instruments.. the random valve movements that don't correspond to what is happening in the music just makes it very difficult to watch.

  • Florentina March rocks :-) Brilliant film - thanks for the clips (even though I can watch it anytime on DVD! - ha)

  • Well, thats good to hear...Julius Fucick was a genious when he wrote Florentiner March :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

  • I LOVE this movie...every band member needs to see it! Thanks for the vid!
