Goodmans are junk....dont forget the boards on 80% downflows, or the heat exchangers that last 8-10 years, but alot of the problems arise from the shitbag companies that put them in, im a NATE Certified Tech, and ive seen some downright SCARY installs.....Soft soldered refrigerant lines, burnt up valves, not purging with nitrogen, incorrect metering devices, overcharged, undercharged, not wiring low voltage correctly,etc...... But Goodmans are pretty shitty.....
@hackfreehvac yeah, I go behind other companies everyday, and the things I see would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!! Just this week, went on a water leak call..the company who installed the 90% Goodman a few yrs back had ran the 2" pvc flue in the bottom of a 5/4/3 B Vent "tee" (that the hot water tank was still vented into) so, where the 3' feed came into the 5" part it went right onto pvc, it had eventually melted a huge hole in the PVC causing water and CO leak
Newer Goodman's actually are pretty good. I have a 2008 Goodman and it works Fine, never had any problems with it since we've been here for about 6 months.
In my mind its the installation and how hacked it is..A builders grade system will always suck.. Period.. There built cheap and not ment to be anything long lasting.. I just had a Goodman installed in my buddys town home in san diego. It was a good install, done very well by a well trained, liscenced contractor who pulled permits.. Also i feel Heat Pumps in general SUCK.. There trouble prone, complex units with alot of parts. A straight cool unit with a gas or electric furnace is better
those goodmans are bad but some work good the ones from 2007 and up are pretty good mine had to be repaired only once but turns out a cat had climbed the duct and
A neighbor just got a new Goodman A/C unit. Seems a bit louder than the one they had before. The old one they had was really low to the ground. Really flat, if you know what I mean. I wish I knew the brand.
@hackfreehvac I looked at some videos of Rheem/Ruud and it did look like one of those. Short unit with fan to one side. It had to be 20 years old or so though.
Do you know if Carrier has ever used Tecumseh compressors? I ask because I have two 16 year old Carriers, one with a Copeland and one with a Tecumseh. I know one of them is a replacement compressor. The copeland is 1.5 ton the Tecumseh is 2 ton. The Tecumseh unit is noisier than the Copeland one. Are Tecumseh compressors decent?
Mom is the owner of an '09 grinding lemon. So far-- 8 service calls-- First, 'efficiency adjusted?' twice--initial electric bill increased $200. Soon, evaporator sprang a leak-- solid ice so thick the flimsy fan seized. For 2 weeks part on order (coming from?), used emergency heat! Last call-- to address thermostat setting of 77 and unable to get house under 84--told best it would do. Weather was mid-95/humid-- Same yesterday, so I did temp check of air 1' into vent-- 71 (my 14 yr. old Trane=60.
The Goodman lovers tell me they are all quiet now.
Honestly I don't see many of them.
The building I take care of now has all Trane, Carrier, McQuay and one Goodman condenser on a Trane Air Handler. Makes me cringe every time I see the POS! It's basically brand new though. So we'll see.
@hackfreehvac -- Not so, it makes quite a ruckus. She recently was charged $186 to unstop the condensate drain by her fly-by-night installers (1 of the 8). Max of 3 minutes. When I complained to the co., they promised to refund $66. Spoke to the rep. just now-- Instead of a check, she gets a service debit. I countered that all they had to do was jack up the price on the inevitable next service. His response: "We don't do things like that." -- Love my Trane and my HVAC company.
As I'm reading these comments I can't believe all these Goodmans break down because they all suck. How about who installed the system ? Duct sizing, returns, contaminates in linesets.Alot of factors other than, they just suck !
I'll bet anything that half the problems were due to poor installation practices .
I believe this is more than enough information to safely say that anything with Goodman's stamp of approval on is a waste of time and money. Have fun praising your Amana's. I would take a Rheem, Carrier, Train, Lennox, Suxaire (Luxaire), or any other unit for that matter over anything manufactured by Goodman. That is all.
@jman0870 Every unit in my neighborhood is a Goodman and they all suck. I am not an HVAC contractor but I know a piece of shit when I hear it. To make matters worse the builder sat each unit 3.5 feet away from the house next door. I am paying dearly for this everyday because my neighbor refuses to fix the problem with the AC. I even offered to fix the problem but he is a complete ass.
Indeed! Honestly it would be a tough decision in choosing what to replace my own Heat Pump with.
The only easy part of choosing would be what NOT to use. And that would be Goodman on every category. HA HA!
What is truley disgusting is I heard that the company who bought Goettl out (one of the toughest local brands ever) is putting Goettl logos on Goodman equipment. Basically, using the name to sell junk. :-(
Their high quality Copeland Scroll compressors fail after two months of operation due to poor system design. Their reversing valves stick and cause the compressors to cook themselves.
The lists go on and on. Their new communicating outdoor units have two components in the electrical compartment, a board and a capacitor. How many contactors does a normal heat pump chew up in it's life? 2? 3? How many micro relays for the compressor are going to get cooked on these boards?
Their suction service valves stick out further than the seat for the brass cap when backseated and cause the system to leak over the winter months. Their boards are miswired straight from the factory. The metal used to construct the air handlers strips out after the screws have been removed 3 or 4 times for general preventative maintenance.
Amana never bought out Goodman. Goodman bought Amana, and anything made by Goodman is crap. Amana gas furnaces, on the other hand, are made by Maytag and not Goodman.
Amana air conditioners and heat pumps are plagued with more problems than you could possibly imagine. Their TXVs may as well have made in China stamped on them along with a disclaimer that states "This valve will fail within one year."
In my personal opinion GOODMAN IS GREAT!!!! I install this brand a lot and never had any complains except for a blow fuse, one case out 20 units in the last 3 years, you should check on carrier heat exchanges you will find cracks everywhere, or rheem: you have to replace a noisy fan motor when is just one year old... and Traine: we got calls about recharge new systems, they leak from the ports valves and don't forget the TXV, I THINK IT DEPENDS ON THE INSTALLER, don't you agree???
That's funny... we used to call them Junk-a-trol instead on Janitrol. Most of the one I have ever worked on or seen were crap.
Don't be too hard on them though. If it wasn't for broken equipment, we wouldn't have a job. Thanks goodness for all the crap out there... it keeps me getting paid !!!
Well thankfully Goodman now uses Amana designs rather than Janitrol. Goodmans are now actually decent units, but still low bid. Give me a 19 SEER Lennox XC21 any day. :)
We have a three year old Goodman that came with our new home and it is total crap. A coil in the air exchanger is already replaced after leaking a pound and a half of R22 per month. That was 13 days ago. Now the heat pump is frozen solid and no heat. Lines froze from unit into A coil. Goodman called about warranty and they don't give a crap. Their product is CRAP. I will never buy again.
rheem is crap compared to goodman. ive worked with this company for 2 years that deals with rheem and goodman. lets see, 3 warrenty calls on goodman, 1 was due to tinners dropping sheet metal in the vent motor. rheem, well, flame sensor after flame sensor. then the vent motor with the black housing. 6 out of 10 are cracked. whats fun is when the person has 3 rheems out of warrenty and all 3 are cracked. and constant pressure switch issuse. carrier- 6 years old, plan on new ignitor.
We use nothing but Goodman (janitrol in the past) for our Gas furnaces and A/C units. I will admit that the janitrol condensers were noisy as hell. We easily install 10-15 condensers a year, and have only had 1 bad compressor(janitrol unit) from the start. We have yet to have any problems with any of the Goodman units (furnace or A/C). To say Goodman is junk is not accurate at all. When I think of the word junk..the first word that comes to mind is YORK!
IF YOU HAVE MONEY TO PAY FOR ONE TRANE OR A CARRIER ,LET GO GET IT,Exact AND STOP SAYING stupid, BECAUSE I HAVE MORE THAN 8 YEARS WORKING WITH GOODMAN AND I HAVE NO PROBLEMS THAT ALL DEPENDS ON TECHNICAL installs OK, I SAY IT IS NOT THE BEST BUT is consistent with the budget THANKS FOR PEOPLE
I have done many installs of Goodman units here in kentucky. With little to no trouble, calls, or breakdowns. Im not saying they are the finest product, but most of the time for penny pinchers these are the best thing going.
Very informative. Thanks. Too bad our home already came with a Goodman, and 26 months later, only warm air coming out with AC, in freaking Texas !!! Im not a repairman, but im hoping a relay is the problem, and I can fix it. Wish you lived close buy, you seem to know your stuff.
Goodman sucks! I sure miss the old General Electric central air unit that cooled this house ice cold for 40+ years.
This cheap new Goodman P.O.S. central ac compressor doesn't cool at all. Even the air from the registers isn't cold (just slightly cooler than room temp).
Ok I agree that the old General Electrics are awesome....but if your new Goodman isn''t at least 15 degrees cooler than ambient air you need to have that bad boy serviced. I can squeeze a 20 degree differnence nearly on every install. I've started installing American Standard though they are a lot better piece of equipment.
Ever since Goodman was bought out by Amana their equipment has been great. No complaints on the new designs. Most of all I am glad to see their new furnace heat exchangers. The old clam shell with the stupid rings that held them together was a bad joke. I hope the engineer who came up with that p.o.s. design has to work for a living now.
I wouldn't say great. I'd just say that they are not as bad as before. :-P
Someone just told me Goodman shipped out a bunch of 4 ton Heat Pumps with the wrong Reversing Valves in them.
Goodman has yet to equal a name brand like Lennox. They are still entry level only. The sad thing is many NAME BRANDS have lowered their quality. Trane/Carrier, etc. :-(
did you stop of doing ac video and did you erase some of them. man i like your videos and enjoy waching it but you stopped and youre doing videos for paysonbadboy that is also cool
The main reason is it's a slow time at work. Plus doing commercial only now with just the accounts that we have, there isn't much chance to see anything NEW once you've gone through the accounts a few times. Most of the stuff is only worked on by the few of us, and my coworkers at this company don't do that shit. :-)
I think I have every Pink Floyd record there is. We used to call them records, I guess its all CD now. I quit using Goodman a few years ago. I had to change too many evap coils in warranty. A lot of those time delay relays on the fan too. I alwasy replace them with a 93-40 relay
Yup, lots and lots of 90-340 relays. I actually did one up and used Honeywell Fan Managers that have a time delay board attached to a 90-340 (as seen in the pictures) in place of the stock time delay relays that failed constantly! It only took Goodman 10 yrs to realize those relays sucked.
I like goodman furnaces, they are easy to install and I have not had a problem with them yet. They are built with shitty light gauge metal and are cheap all around but small time contractor or not some people are tight asses and will keep getting bids until someone quotes a cheap ass furnace. I always use rheem heat pumps and ac's but sometimes thats all someone wants to pay for.
I don't have any disliking for the Goodman furnaces except for how shity the cabinets were to get the panels back on. The new ones are better. I've always LIKED their simple circuit board and wiring too. Oh, their older 5 ton dual blower wheel setup was a pile of shit. But that was that specific size/model. Their heat pump condensers suck tho.
It's non other than Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky" from their 1973 Dark Side of the Moon LP. I grew up thinking that was a black woman singing to have a voice with power and soul like that. Then 10 years ago i saw the making of that album and it's some skinny white chick. They told her to sing like she was being killed or something and that's what she sang over the music. Crazy. One of the most talented and unique music groups EVER!
Pink Floyd rules! I have "The Wall" 2-disc set. My favorites are Another Brick in the Wall and Comfortably Numb.
Also, I have come to my own conclusion about Goodmans. Read the comment I posted about 2 weeks ago. Like I said, I think my Grandmother's Goodman 10 SEER works great, it is just noisy as hell. I just posted a video of it in heat mode after a snowstorm and it actually sounds quieter than in A/C mode.
Comfortly numb is a song all on it's own. Nobody sounds like that except David Gilmour. I've been slow at logging into this account. I'll check out your post.
The Goodman heat pump at my Grandma's condo (see video "goodman heat pump at 3,800 square foot condo) isn't really a piece of junk as much as it is a pain in the ass. It is about 15 years old yet still works great, but the noise is so damn annoying! When the airhandler in the basement comes on, it shakes the floor of the 1st floor master bedroom, and gives you a foot massage of sorts. It vibrates a good portion of the house and there are 2 bedrooms in the basement. Forget about sleeping.
Lol I can watch this video once a month and get chills down my spine. I replaced a furnace today with a crew and outside was a goodman a/c unit. I glared at it wondering what was gunna go wrong after the furnace install and start up lolz..
funny thing is I've seen the janitrol "janitrash" units defrost boards keep the strips on constantly. Usually you will find that one in the cooling mode when the air is not cooling the house down.
Well, that is actually one problem I have NEVER experienced with them. The reason for that is that only .000001% of heat pumps in Phoenix have ANY auxillary heat strips. :p And that white wire in the condenser is never hooked up to anything. Every once in a while an installer or tech will leave the white wire bare and when it goes into defrost, it blows the 24VAC transformer. Got to love that.
LOL! Tail light guarentee! Goodman style! On the air handler's (heat pumps), Goodman is too damn cheap to install ANY low voltage fuse/breaker. If you ever short the 24V side, it blows the transformer. I of course always add a fuse when I replace the transformer. :p
Man this vid has opened my eyes. I've never been happy with my Goodman heat pump. And the people who service it aren't much better. Apparently, we have a cheap builder who cut corners. We've had plenty of issues with the heat strips going out and being low on freon. I fear the repairs they are doing are just putting a band-aid on a bullet wound.
Goodman Amana Corp has the lowest compressor failure rate, being the largest user of the Copeland Compressors in the country with the lowest number of failures. ck your facts. Also the copper is of the same thickness in all brands with only small difference brand to brand..motor failures unit per unit are almost the same across the brands. Now cabinets differ with americ std the best the rest about the same. Amana has the best warry with hassle free replacement. Goodman was junk,5yrs now best
If you believe that the copper thickness and reliability is the SAME then you must be a PENCIL PUSHER somewhere! LOL@you! Check my facts? Don't the pictures speak 1,000 words? Wait...I've fixed over 1,000 leaks in them copper tubes myself! Damn! I'm an expert at fixing those damn things! Also ask most Phoenix, AZ based techs. Most will say Goodman was the noisiest and most unreliable here. Of course we are in the MOST demanding area in the country for Air Conditioning!
Not pensil pusher, master tech-fixing probs where h-owner can get no resolution from c-tractor. not brand specific in that arena. Personally I have had about the same leak failure accross all brands. I looked into araz area and seems a company called Chas-Roberts has bought so many goodman units for install that area it would really slant the ratio. adp coils have the best tubing-my motor and compressor data stands. who is this run cap bandit?not your alter ego is it? he is baaad..
Yup Chas Roberts installed Goodman, Carrier, Trane. Goodman for the CHEAP ass builders. There are a LOT of Goodmans. But in the 2001 to 2005 time period I patched up a few thousand leaks on Goodmans all in the same spot! The cap tubes in the OD units on Heat Pumps. And I don't know how SLANTED it can be, when you fixed one house. Then came back next week and fixed the house across the street. Next week the next house, all until 50% of the homes had leaks in the first 3 years of operation!
Goodman is garbage by the way.. Trust me, I've worked on many. They built shit for units and every tech hated them in all regions. You must be smoking crack....
I love watching ur videos, and I agree, it is funny to see how many hackjobs are out there. Also, my Grandma's "luxury" condo in Pennsylvania has a 10 SEER Goodman heat pump.
"luxory" LOL! Yeah I've seen some expensive houses in Scottsdale, AZ that came with the lowest builder model. Funny how in a climate that reaches 120 degrees that the builder would pick that to go the cheapest route on only to save himself a buck!
Man I wish I could rant and rave and go into a tirade about how crappy the Goodman sounds but it seems kind of quiet to me but I know that these words will no doubt be denegrated to the uttermost. Oh well nice GOODMAN!! LOL
Hi me again. I have a tech question for you. My aunt has a roughly 4,500-5,000 square foot colonial in Northern Virginia, built 1981. It has a single-zoned Trane heat pump that does a good job of cooling the first floor, but on the second floor there is absolutely no air coming out of the vents. Also, in the winter, the heat pump does a lousy job heating the house. Do you have any ideas as to why this might be happening. Everything except the ducting has been replaced and it still does not work.
Good Lord how big is this Trane? Unless your aunt is sporting 2lb. foam insulation or her house is extremely tight with no duct leakage to the outside she needs at least two systems or a 5 Ton zone with at least two zones and a variable speed air handler that is chunking some serious air. She would need @ least 2200 cfm coming off the blower if both zones called @ the same time and the system would need to have a two speed compressor for varying conditions!!
Like I said it is just not worth it to install dual zones, and I think the house would benefit just fine from a dual-stage Trane XL19i heat pump. The exact issue is that on hot days it blows ice cubes out of the first floor vents and in the finished basement, but there is absolutely no airflow upstairs.
Ok here's the problem... there needs to be a manual volumetric damper to control the amount of air upstairs, downstairs, and first floor. You will need a 20 inch Round pipe at least 6 ft long and install 3 14 inch takeoffs with 3 separate manual dampers u can adjust airflow with. If you can dump most of the beast upstairs in the summer and switch the load to the first floor in the winter because the radiant heat from the first floor or basement will warm the upstairs but then you can adjust.
But going back if you value a low energy bill then the best thing to do is pay the 1500 dollars for a honeywell zone control and two zone dampers and you will save plenty enough to cover the install in a years time or within 18 months!
Her duct work is just the beginning in my opinion. I would love to see this house and the unit there attempting to use to heat and cool. This type of house calls for a geothermal or an extremely high end Trane or Lennox to deal with just the cooling load alone which requires less btu's. She must have an energy star home!
The heat pump is from 2006, but the Trane looks much older. It is an "XL-something high-efficiency heat pump", and it is pretty big, and I agree that this house needs dual zone, but that would cost to much. I do not have a picture at the moment, but it is just a generic center hall colonial, five bedrooms, four and a half baths. The heat pump used to have a special electronic particulate filter, but that broke and they couldn't afford to fix it so they just put a regular filter in it.
Lol we never really found the problem, I pulled the furnace and brought it to the distributor and showed him all the burnt wires. They gave me a whole new furnace. I work mainly on carrier now and there are a few things I hate about them too lol.
Oh ok. Well around here Charlie (install company) had a few houses burn down. Was found to be the Gemini Gas Valve not always closing all the way. You could unplug the power and a lazy flame would still be rolling out form the burners! All the high limit switches in the world couldn't stop that! They should have kept making gas valves like they used to. Safe and sturdy. Now they are just CHEAP!
I forgot about the smart valves (gas valves) that f up in thier late 1990's gas packs - early 2000's. So lets see, ( heat exchangers, cased coils, sequencers, cheap metal, freon leaks.. did I miss any other components.. i remember the first new style rsidential gas pack i installed in 2004-2005 had a locked draft motor from the factory!! lol. Then a 80% furnace almost burned a house down. Other than that they are good MAN.
Hey when you mentioned almost burning a house down. Was it due to that new Gemini Gas Valve? I don't think those have redundant safties like valves in the past did. Although that's NOT a Goodman problem but the manufacture of the valve.
One thing you DID miss was Goodman uses the thinnest fan blades! And the new ones at the Goodman Distributors were not even stocked in protective boxes so they would be just as wacked as the one you are replacing!
Yes Goodman is shit, Their sequencers, heat exchangers and cased coils are all shit. I can see if you have a problem here and there but not every service call the same problems. thats why i say that.
EXACTLY! I've had Goodman Lovers jump my shit on HVAC forums before even though at one point I had DAILY picture logs of changing out them sequencer style "stack relay" fan managers and leaks in coils and cap tubes. What part of the U.S. are you from?
Phoenix seems to have more RTU's than any other area (for residential) from what I'm told. Most of our new stuff is with the condenser on the ground and the air handler in the attic. Sometimes I'd rather go on a roof than in an attic. Except for them scary two story houses.
The Goodmen units I have serviced here in the Pacific NW seem to do just as good as any other brand. Of course the seasonal heat load is not that great compared to other regions. I think most problems come from contractors using "builder models".
No doubt to that. I used to do work in a colder climate of Arizona where it snows and we never had these problems with Goodmans. Of course we didn;t use HEAT PUMPS. We still COULD see the difference form a Goodman to a American Standard. That's why Goodman was low bid option for us to sale. But in the Phoenix, AZ area the differences between Goodman and other name brands are quite evident. Honestly, all makes are getting cheaper and less reliable than they used to be. That is pretty sad.. :(
Get a grip, they do just as good as a trane or carrier!! Trane is the only heat pump I've ever put in that came from the factory with a locked evaporator fan!! I have been putting in GOODMAN for years and I don't have callback's every day!! I do have callback's on heat pumps but on every type of equipment including Ruud, Trane, Goodman , and Lennox
Usually if someone rants about how Goodman is "just as good", it's because they couldn't get a NAME BRAND dealership and then get defensive when someone mentions the junk they sell. Goodman is CHEAP junk. It's sold to DIY and hack shops or as the LOW bid if someone offers name brands as well. The only thing good is the no fuss warranty. I've fixed about 300 cap tube leaks in 1 years time. 300+ stack relays, and a zillion other parts in those track homes. The Trane areas were never that bad.
I have installed at least 20 Goodman's in the past year and I don't get call back's! Period..... Look get your subcontractor's license so you can install all Ruud and Trane and at the end of every day go to bed with extra money in your pocket , go to church, get some peace in your mind, and quit finding fault with anything you can. Heating and Air is not my life!! I hope it's not your's!!!! The test isn't that hard!!!!
as much as goodman sucks if your company gives you a chance togo to the goodman tour in houston texas GO. They have the best treatment and food in the world. lol its awesome. You also get to see how they make everything in their 3 diffrent factorys. even flex ducts. I dont like goodman in my company we mostly work trane and carrier and ofcourse there are always goodman service calls.
I showed my dad your typical noisey goodman unit. He thought that unit was just noisy because it was in an enclosed area. I would love to show him a Goodman that is more in an area that sound can be more distibited in more places. Right now he thinks we should be listening to this guy(The Goodman lover.) when I am trying to find us a good new HVAC system. By the way I am just twelve and love HVAC equipment big or small. I really like your videos.
Thanks! It of course is LOUDER when it's in between a wall and a stucco home! But these units can be just plain LOUD even in the open back yard. When I worked in the newer homes a lot we would get calls from home owners just because of how LOUD the unit was in compare to any other unit they ever had before! I wish I had a good digital camera to take videos back then. I'd have a video a day for sure! :)

The boys at Chainsaw Charlie in Phoenix were known to just open the king valves on new installs without even vacuuming the system!
I guess that's what they had to do when the company gave the techs TWELVE start ups per day when the housing market boomed.
So sad when I witnessed that.

Those people shouldn't be touching a gas furnace!

those goodmans are bad but some work good the ones from 2007 and up are pretty good mine had to be repaired only once but turns out a cat had climbed the duct and
turned off the breaker for the air handler

wow no offense but ive got a goodman thats been running trouble free but sometimes it blows cold like my friends concord and mine needs some tlc
but it freezes the house in summer and burnd it to a crisp in the winter but my grandmas frigidaire is better than mine

So...you don't like Goodmans eh? lol.
A neighbor just got a new Goodman A/C unit. Seems a bit louder than the one they had before. The old one they had was really low to the ground. Really flat, if you know what I mean. I wish I knew the brand.
Anywho I like my Carriers.
captain150 1 year ago
@captain150
I bet their old one was a Rheem/Ruud brand.
They are typically one of the quietest condensers even the basic 10 SEER models.
hackfreehvac 1 year ago
@hackfreehvac I looked at some videos of Rheem/Ruud and it did look like one of those. Short unit with fan to one side. It had to be 20 years old or so though.
Do you know if Carrier has ever used Tecumseh compressors? I ask because I have two 16 year old Carriers, one with a Copeland and one with a Tecumseh. I know one of them is a replacement compressor. The copeland is 1.5 ton the Tecumseh is 2 ton. The Tecumseh unit is noisier than the Copeland one. Are Tecumseh compressors decent?
captain150 1 year ago
@captain150
Hmm... I can't seem to recall. The older ones were using Carlyles a lot. Tough as crap.
Tecumseh is known to be tough as well.
Too bad it is noisy.
Those Rheem/Ruuds are tough as nails too.

Mom is the owner of an '09 grinding lemon. So far-- 8 service calls-- First, 'efficiency adjusted?' twice--initial electric bill increased $200. "Grinding Lemon".
HA HA! Is it noisy?

Wow. $186 for an in n out repair like a simple drain clear.
WOW!
Bet those techs are paid commission too.
That will weed out the honest techs. :-/

As I'm reading these comments I can't believe all these Goodmans break down because they all suck. How about who installed the system ? Duct sizing, returns, contaminates in linesets.Alot of factors other than, they just suck !
I'll bet anything that half the problems were due to poor installation practices .

Hillarious ! This video is dedicated to all the contractors who lost out on a bid against Goodman equipment.Pay back is a b-i-itch
demmylowther 1 year ago
I believe this is more than enough information to safely say that anything with Goodman's stamp of approval on is a waste of time and money. Have fun praising your Amana's. I would take a Rheem, Carrier, Train, Lennox, Suxaire (Luxaire), or any other unit for that matter over anything manufactured by Goodman. That is all.
jman0870 1 year ago
@jman0870 Every unit in my neighborhood is a Goodman and they all suck. I am not an HVAC contractor but I know a piece of shit when I hear it. To make matters worse the builder sat each unit 3.5 feet away from the house next door. I am paying dearly for this everyday because my neighbor refuses to fix the problem with the AC. I even offered to fix the problem but he is a complete ass.
cookie1176 1 year ago
@cookie1176
You got that right!
Goodman's are the ONLY A/C brands that I could hear running when I was in the customer's front yard and the condenser was in the back yard.
I knew they had a "turd" as soon as I knocked on the door.
hackfreehvac 1 year ago
@jman0870
hackfreehvac 1 year ago
Their high quality Copeland Scroll compressors fail after two months of operation due to poor system design. Their reversing valves stick and cause the compressors to cook themselves.
The lists go on and on. Their new communicating outdoor units have two components in the electrical compartment, a board and a capacitor. How many contactors does a normal heat pump chew up in it's life? 2? 3? How many micro relays for the compressor are going to get cooked on these boards?
jman0870 1 year ago
Their suction service valves stick out further than the seat for the brass cap when backseated and cause the system to leak over the winter months. Their boards are miswired straight from the factory. The metal used to construct the air handlers strips out after the screws have been removed 3 or 4 times for general preventative maintenance.
jman0870 1 year ago
Amana never bought out Goodman. Goodman bought Amana, and anything made by Goodman is crap. Amana gas furnaces, on the other hand, are made by Maytag and not Goodman.
Amana air conditioners and heat pumps are plagued with more problems than you could possibly imagine. Their TXVs may as well have made in China stamped on them along with a disclaimer that states "This valve will fail within one year."
jman0870 1 year ago
@jman0870 I have worked at Amana/ Goodman from 1976 until present. We make Amana Gas furnances every day!

Goodmans are easy to repair. Two stage Lennox can kiss my ass.

I will never give a penny to Lennox they are junk and take too long to heat and cool houses. My Goodmans work great and are quiet
MrJRamal 2 years ago
Well thankfully Goodman now uses Amana designs rather than Janitrol. Goodmans are now actually decent units, but still low bid. Give me a 19 SEER Lennox XC21 any day. :)

We have a three year old Goodman that came with our new home and it is total crap. A coil in the air exchanger is already replaced after leaking a pound and a half of R22 per month. That was 13 days ago. Now the heat pump is frozen solid and no heat. Lines froze from unit into A coil. Goodman called about warranty and they don't give a crap. Their product is CRAP. I will never buy again.

goodman is a damn good unit they have come a long way in the last 5 or 6 yrs before they was junk but now they are great units
ThePohto 2 years ago
rheem is crap compared to goodman. ive worked with this company for 2 years that deals with rheem and goodman. lets see, 3 warrenty calls on goodman, 1 was due to tinners dropping sheet metal in the vent motor. rheem, well, flame sensor after flame sensor. then the vent motor with the black housing.

Wish you lived close buy, you seem to know your stuff.
manny285 2 years ago
Goodman sucks! I sure miss the old General Electric central air unit that cooled this house ice cold for 40+ years.
This cheap new Goodman P.O.S. central ac compressor doesn't cool at all. Even the air from the registers isn't cold (just slightly cooler than room temp).
Total junk! DO NOT BUY A GOODMAN!!
WJ2W 2 years ago
Ok I agree that the old General Electrics are awesome....but if your new Goodman isn''t at least 15 degrees cooler than ambient air you need to have that bad boy serviced. I can squeeze a 20 degree differnence nearly on every install. I've started installing American Standard though they are a lot better piece of equipment.
avistahvac 2 years ago
Ever since Goodman was bought out by Amana their equipment has been great. No complaints on the new designs. Most of all I am glad to see their new furnace heat exchangers. The old clam shell with the stupid rings that held them together was a bad joke. I hope the engineer who came up with that p.o.s. design has to work for a living now.
tstatech 2 years ago
I wouldn't say great. I'd just say that they are not as bad as before. :-P
Someone just told me Goodman shipped out a bunch of 4 ton Heat Pumps with the wrong Reversing Valves in them.
Goodman has yet to equal a name brand like Lennox. They are still entry level only. The sad thing is many NAME BRANDS have lowered their quality. Trane/Carrier, etc. :-(

Plus doing commercial only now with just the accounts that we have, there isn't much chance to see anything NEW once you've gone through the accounts a few times. buckners1 3 years ago
I think I have every Pink Floyd record there is. We used to call them records, I guess its all CD now. I quit using Goodman a few years ago. I had to change too many evap coils in warranty. A lot of those time delay relays on the fan too. I alwasy replace them with a 93-40 relay
buckners1 3 years ago
Yup, lots and lots of 90-340 relays. I actually did one up and used Honeywell Fan Managers that have a time delay board attached to a 90-340 (as seen in the pictures) in place of the stock time delay relays that failed constantly! It only took Goodman 10 yrs to realize those relays sucked.
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
I like goodman furnaces, they are easy to install and I have not had a problem with them yet. They are built with shitty light gauge metal and are cheap all around but small time contractor or not some people are tight asses and will keep getting bids until someone quotes a cheap ass furnace. I always use rheem heat pumps and ac's but sometimes thats all someone wants to pay for.
unicursalhex 3 years ago
I don't have any disliking for the Goodman furnaces except for how shity the cabinets were to get the panels back on. The new ones are better. I've always LIKED their simple circuit board and wiring too. Oh, their older 5 ton dual blower wheel setup was a pile of shit. But that was that specific size/model. Their heat pump condensers suck tho.

What song is this? I kinda like it.
classifiedinfo 3 years ago
It's non other than Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky" from their 1973 Dark Side of the Moon LP. I grew up thinking that was a black woman singing to have a voice with power and soul like that. Then 10 years ago i saw the making of that album and it's some skinny white chick. They told her to sing like she was being killed or something and that's what she sang over the music. Crazy. One of the most talented and unique music groups EVER!
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
Pink Floyd rules! I have "The Wall" 2-disc set. My favorites are Another Brick in the Wall and Comfortably Numb.
Also, I have come to my own conclusion about Goodmans. Read the comment I posted about 2 weeks ago. Like I said, I think my Grandmother's Goodman 10 SEER works great, it is just noisy as hell. I just posted a video of it in heat mode after a snowstorm and it actually sounds quieter than in A/C mode.

Forget about sleeping.

funny thing is I've seen the janitrol "janitrash" units defrost boards keep the strips on constantly. Usually you will find that one in the cooling mode when the air is not cooling the house down.
hemiownzu 3 years ago
Well, that is actually one problem I have NEVER experienced with them. The reason for that is that only .000001% of heat pumps in Phoenix have ANY auxillary heat strips. :p And that white wire in the condenser is never hooked up to anything. Every once in a while an installer or tech will leave the white wire bare and when it goes into defrost, it blows the 24VAC transformer. Got to love that.
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
you go out there and change the low volt fuse or transformer .. puts wire nut on wire and speed off before something else breaks on it lol..
hemiownzu 3 years ago
LOL! Tail light guarentee! Goodman style! On the air handler's (heat pumps), Goodman is too damn cheap to install ANY low voltage fuse/breaker. If you ever short the 24V side, it blows the transformer. I of course always add a fuse when I replace the transformer. :p
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
goodman always have a low voltage fuse in them here
ThePohto 2 years ago

Goodman was junk,5yrs now best
davidchadfish 3 years ago
If you believe that the copper thickness and reliability is the SAME then you must be a PENCIL PUSHER somewhere! LOL@you! Check my facts? Don't the pictures speak 1,000 words? Wait...I've fixed over 1,000 leaks in them copper tubes myself! Damn! I'm an expert at fixing those damn things! Also ask most Phoenix, AZ based techs. Most will say Goodman was the noisiest and most unreliable here. Of course we are in the MOST demanding area in the country for Air Conditioning!
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
Not pensil pusher, master tech-fixing probs where h-owner can get no resolution from c-tractor. not brand specific in that arena. Personally I have had about the same leak failure accross all brands. I looked into araz area and seems a company called Chas-Roberts has bought so many goodman units for install that area it would really slant the ratio. adp coils have the best tubing-my motor and compressor data stands. who is this run cap bandit?not your alter ego is it? he is baaad..
davidchadfish 3 years ago
Yup Chas Roberts installed Goodman, Carrier, Trane. Goodman for the CHEAP ass builders. There are a LOT of Goodmans. But in the 2001 to 2005 time period I patched up a few thousand leaks on Goodmans all in the same spot! The cap tubes in the OD units on Heat Pumps. And I don't know how SLANTED it can be, when you fixed one house. Then came back next week and fixed the house across the street. Next week the next house, all until 50% of the homes had leaks in the first 3 years of operation!
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
Goodman is garbage by the way.. Trust me, I've worked on many. They built shit for units and every tech hated them in all regions. You must be smoking crack....

LOL
avistahvac 3 years ago
Hi me again. I have a tech question for you. My aunt has a roughly 4,500-5,000 square foot colonial in Northern Virginia, built 1981. It has a single-zoned Trane heat pump that does a good job of cooling the first floor, but on the second floor there is absolutely no air coming out of the vents. Also, in the winter, the heat pump does a lousy job heating the house. Do you have any ideas as to why this might be happening. Everything except the ducting has been replaced and it still does not work.
classifiedinfo 3 years ago
Good Lord how big is this Trane? Unless your aunt is sporting 2lb. foam insulation or her house is extremely tight with no duct leakage to the outside she needs at least two systems or a 5 Ton zone with at least two zones and a variable speed air handler that is chunking some serious air. She would need @ least 2200 cfm coming off the blower if both zones called @ the same time and the system would need to have a two speed compressor for varying conditions!!
avistahvac 3 years ago
Like I said it is just not worth it to install dual zones, and I think the house would benefit just fine from a dual-stage Trane XL19i heat pump. The exact issue is that on hot days it blows ice cubes out of the first floor vents and in the finished basement, but there is absolutely no airflow upstairs.
classifiedinfo 3 years ago
Ok here's the problem... there needs to be a manual volumetric damper to control the amount of air upstairs, downstairs, and first floor. You will need a 20 inch Round pipe at least 6 ft long and install 3 14 inch takeoffs with 3 separate manual dampers u can adjust airflow with. If you can dump most of the beast upstairs in the summer and switch the load to the first floor in the winter because the radiant heat from the first floor or basement will warm the upstairs but then you can adjust.
avistahvac 3 years ago
I know a fair amount about HVAC, but could you translate please?
classifiedinfo 3 years ago
If you don't do this yourself it will range from 1500 to2500. If I lived closer I would do it myself for 1000.
avistahvac 3 years ago
and how much will all this shit cost? My aunt is a bit of a penny pincher lol
classifiedinfo 3 years ago
But going back if you value a low energy bill then the best thing to do is pay the 1500 dollars for a honeywell zone control and two zone dampers and you will save plenty enough to cover the install in a years time or within 18 months!
avistahvac 3 years ago
Her duct work is just the beginning in my opinion. I would love to see this house and the unit there attempting to use to heat and cool. This type of house calls for a geothermal or an extremely high end Trane or Lennox to deal with just the cooling load alone which requires less btu's. She must have an energy star home!
avistahvac 3 years ago
The heat pump is from 2006, but the Trane looks much older. It is an "XL-something high-efficiency heat pump", and it is pretty big, and I agree that this house needs dual zone, but that would cost to much. I do not have a picture at the moment, but it is just a generic center hall colonial, five bedrooms, four and a half baths. The heat pump used to have a special electronic particulate filter, but that broke and they couldn't afford to fix it so they just put a regular filter in it.
classifiedinfo 3 years ago
Lol we never really found the problem, I pulled the furnace and brought it to the distributor and showed him all the burnt wires. They gave me a whole new furnace. I work mainly on carrier now and there are a few things I hate about them too lol.
hemiownzu 3 years ago
Now they are just CHEAP!
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
I forgot about the smart valves (gas valves) that f up in thier late 1990's gas packs - early 2000's. So lets see, ( heat exchangers, cased coils, sequencers, cheap metal, freon leaks.. did I miss any other components.. i remember the first new style rsidential gas pack i installed in 2004-2005 had a locked draft motor from the factory!! lol. Then a 80% furnace almost burned a house down. Other than that they are good MAN.
hemiownzu 3 years ago
Hey when you mentioned almost burning a house down. Was it due to that new Gemini Gas Valve? I don't think those have redundant safties like valves in the past did. Although that's NOT a Goodman problem but the manufacture of the valve.
One thing you DID miss was Goodman uses the thinnest fan blades! And the new ones at the Goodman Distributors were not even stocked in protective boxes so they would be just as wacked as the one you are replacing!
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
Yes Goodman is shit, Their sequencers, heat exchangers and cased coils are all shit. I can see if you have a problem here and there but not every service call the same problems. thats why i say that.
hemiownzu 3 years ago

I think most problems come from contractors using "builder models".
jeromejl 3 years ago
No doubt to that. I used to do work in a colder climate of Arizona where it snows and we never had these problems with Goodmans. Of course we didn;t use HEAT PUMPS. We still COULD see the difference form a Goodman to a American Standard. That's why Goodman was low bid option for us to sale. But in the Phoenix, AZ area the differences between Goodman and other name brands are quite evident. Honestly, all makes are getting cheaper and less reliable than they used to be. That is pretty sad.. :(
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
Get a grip, they do just as good as a trane or carrier!! Trane is the only heat pump I've ever put in that came from the factory with a locked evaporator fan!! I have been putting in GOODMAN for years and I don't have callback's every day!! I do have callback's on heat pumps but on every type of equipment including Ruud, Trane, Goodman , and Lennox
avistahvac 3 years ago
Usually if someone rants about how Goodman is "just as good", it's because they couldn't get a NAME BRAND dealership and then get defensive when someone mentions the junk they sell. Goodman is CHEAP junk. It's sold to DIY and hack shops or as the LOW bid if someone offers name brands as well. The only thing good is the no fuss warranty. I've fixed about 300 cap tube leaks in 1 years time. 300+ stack relays, and a zillion other parts in those track homes. The Trane areas were never that bad.
hackfreehvac 3 years ago
I have installed at least 20 Goodman's in the past year and I don't get call back's! Period..... Look get your subcontractor's license so you can install all Ruud and Trane and at the end of every day go to bed with extra money in your pocket , go to church, get some peace in your mind, and quit finding fault with anything you can. Thanks! It of course is LOUDER when it's in between a wall and a stucco home! But these units can be just plain LOUD even in the open back yard.
