You need to know the movie in order to understand the song. To keep it short: She's a courtesan and falls in love with that Prince who loves her back, his dad is against that and said to them that if they keep loving each other then she'll end up in prison or will be killed. In that song she's singing "Pyar kiya to darna kya" which means like "If you have loved then what can you fear?". She took the knife to symbolically tell the King that she isn't afraid of him killing her.

No, he doesn't. When his son was born, Madhubala's mother came to him and told him he's got a son. So the King was more than happy and told her she can wish for anything she likes. Many years after that, when all this happened, Akbar wanted to kill Madhubala but then her mother came to him and reminded him of the wish. She wished for her daughter's life. So he gave her free but she wasn't allowed to see his son ever again, and the son lived, believing she was dead.

I'm aware of her illness and how awful/sad her life was and I keep thinking she was one of the most talented actress of the history of Bollywood who, like Meena kumari and so many more, die to early. When I was telling this person that she was doubled, it's because some people are really overeacting and compare bollywood actresses performances to "regular" or hollywood actresses. They sometimes never know that it's not their voices and in some rare cases, not them who are dancing.
