the eiffel tower is a great piece of engineering, designed on a drawing board,not like modern day structures which are designed by computers. the statue of liberty was meant for Egypt but ended up in the USA,may be a good will gesture for the obolisk that napoleon recieve from luxor

Why did they change the first floor in the '30's, replacing the arcades designed by Eiffel. They have ruined the Eiffel Tower's original design to make it look more modern. What a shame. In 2014, when the tower celebrates it's 125th anniversary, I hope the French restore it to it's original grandeur.

Thanks! It's good to know I'm not the only one who loves the original tower. FYI, the Dutch Filmmuseum (now called EYE) has a dvd for sale of the 1927 film 'La mystère de la Tour Eiffel' by Julien Duvivier. It's not only a great movie but it also shows the Tower as it was at that time with a good look at the arcades.

It actually had a 20yr life when first built, demolition was set for 1909 not after the Universal Exposition. I dont think any film footage exists of the construction as film was just getting started about that time.

It is very beautiful, I find it strange that no one ever comments on the fact that at sunset on the winter solstice the tip of the shadow of the tower just rests on sacre coeur, an observation I made myself .

True, we kept it because it was a decisive advantage during Franco-Prussian war, telecommunications were transmitted thanks to Eiffel Tower, a lot of scientific experiences were done thanks to it and finally, we used it as TV and Radio antenna until very recently.

We kept it because it was usefull, it was built only for the Universal Exposition of 1889 in Paris and it panned to dismantle it after the show. Today it is still a dismantable structure.

je veux dire qu'en tant que passionné de mécanique et ayant une formation en contruction mécanique,et une maîtrise de mécanique,je suis impressionné par ce qu'a réalisé gustave eiffel,c'est un de mes modèles,avec fulgence bienvenüe qui lui fut l'ingénieur qui réalisa le métro parisien,sans oublier léonard de vinçi biensur
