Sort of have to disagree with you on a couple of points. First, he's a pretty good defensive player and he anticipates well. Notice the steal for a three in the Cinc. game. The Texas semis in 2003 had him stealing two balls as well as other good plays. Certainly a very good athlete but not the best. Most important. He is a winner, a go to guy with high proficiency. I feel sad for Gerry to be honest.
also, where G-Mac got trapped in regards to his NBA prospects was the whole "let's focus on what he can't do instead of what he can". okay, he's not a great defender and he's not a great athlete. but he can make shots, he's tough, and he has enough handle to run the point for about 15 minutes a game.
i'm tired of seeing 7-foot lardasses who can't do shit get crazy contracts just for being overgrown while some real ballplayers get left out just because they stopped growing at 14.
i admire Coach Boeheim for sticking up for his player like that, but one of my initial thoughts (besides,"this guys got a lot of balls") was,"what would the other players be thinking/feeling about hearing their coach basically say the team sucks without this one player?"
however, in hindsight, Boeheim did have a point. the next year, the team didn't even make the NCAA tournament without McNamara, and their frontcourt of Watkins, Roberts and Nichols really underachieved in their careers.
Great memories here. I remember being in high school and running to get to watch the end of it between timeouts. I got in just in time to see him nail that shot against Cincinnati. Next day was even crazier against #1 UConn and their 7 NBA players and being able to pull off a win. Then beating hated rival GTown after losing for 39:50 of the game. Unbelievable. I ordered the championship T Shirt at 9AM Sunday when Manny's opened and my name was 2nd on the list.

If you ever read his NBA scouting report before he played at Syracuse it was excellent. He never got a chance though to show his stuff in theNBA

I have been watching Syracuse Basketball for my entire life, Dwayne Washington, Rony Seikaly, Raphael Addison, Sherman Douglass, Derrick Coleman...Gerry McNamara is the best player all around that Syracuse has ever had. Charisma, clutch shooting, assists, college records in all counts, and a passionate player. Won the first NCAA tournament for Syracuse (six three's in the first half?). All praises. I have been watching Syracuse Basketball for my entire life, Dwayne Washington, Rony Seikaly, Raphael Addison, Sherman Douglass, Derrick Coleman...Gerry McNamara is the best player all around that Syracuse has ever had. Charisma, clutch shooting, assists, college records in all counts, and a passionate player. Won the first NCAA tournament for Syracuse (six three's in the first half?). All praises. Gerry Mcnamara is first class.

They started to play like shit because Gerry was hurt... what made this BET even more incredible was the fact that he was playing through a tweaked hammy that prevented him from playing in the NCAAs. I mean Josh Wright ran the point for most of that game against A&M.

This was the single greatest string of indiviual performances EVER in ANY sport.
I remember watching these games, and it send a chill down my spine and brings a tear to my eye every time I see McNamara's buzzer beaters. Syracuse might have won this tournament, but it seemed like G-Mac was the only one on the floor.
