Problem. Blackbird doesn't have afterburners it has a Ramjet/Turbojet combo. Turbojet is used to get it up to speed, ramjet takes over to put plane at a greater speed. Ramjets can't operate at low speeds.
they still fly those things. last time i saw them anyware was like 5years ago when me and my famly were moveing cross contry and we saw a fleet of them fly across. i was so lucky to be their
The SR's leaking fuel rate was not considered that much worse than others of the era, and many think it had to refuel via tanker right after take off because so much leaked out. Actually, the plane could not safely take off on full tanks as I would have been too heavy if it lost an engine on take off. It also used pressurized nitrogen to fill the void of the tanks to prevent fumes from exploding that probably made the leaking seem worse. The amazing thing about it's performance was it's varia
It is probably leaking fuel everywhere because it is going so slow it can't warm up. For this aircraft anything below the sound barrier counts as a slow pass. Cool aircraft.
Long time go, the day after the Paine Field Airfair ended, we were working close by when the SR 71 took off. I watched it leave, and thought that was the end of it but he came back over at treetop level! About thirty feet above the trees, about three hundred feet up. Sounded like a gas main blew up and believe me, the people came out of that office building like they were running a fifty yard dash. As he pulled up, I could see into the throat of the engines, it was like a fire-breathing dragon.
lil unkown fact on the ol' SR the skin of the aircraft caused fuel to leak everywhere up to and upon take off, it wasn't until it reached operational speed that the temperature and pressure would cause the skin to contract thus causing the fuel leaks to stop. I've had the personal pleasure of actually being on base with a few of these planes they are twice as amazing in person.
@shattered831 It leaked because all the hydraulics and fuel lines were on slip connectors because the plane expanded so much from from the heat, the connectors wouldn't seal until the plane came up to operating temp. I was Stationed at Beale
The SR-71 was designed by the Skunk Works department at Lockheed Air Plane in the late 50's early 60's. The aircraft still holds the records of highest flying over 80,000 ft, and fastest at over mach 3 (2100 mph). It was a reconnaissance aircraft for both the CIA and the U.S. Air Force. It is retired at different locations across the United States.
Hmmm, the SR71 was decomissioned in the mid 1990's ( I subect do to reliance on satalite immagery), recommissioned in the late 1990's then decommisioned again. This Blackbird has a history that will not likely be duplicated. The SR71 was recommisioned in the late 1990's because the satalite technology could not keep up with the real time reconasince of this beautiful bird or failure of the aurora aircraft.. Upon decomissioning we clearly have better technology in satalites or the aurora.

The plane would leak fuel when the metal was cold due to the fact that it was built on purpose like that to withstand the heat it generated while it was flying at it's very high altitude. Once it warmed up the metal would expand and close the gaps.
@valcan321 i know that the sr71 did leak when it was on the ground and had to be re-fuled in the air after take off, something to do with how much heat it created and the expansion of the metal
You just witnessed how hard the SR-71's computer will allow the aircraft to bank, and its hurry-up run to catch the KC-135 waiting for it at altitude.
I've always wondered about the design on this aircraft, I can only assume the initial design meeting went something like this: "Gentlemen, we need to make the most badass looking jet in history. The DOD mentioned something about cameras and high something..err...I forget the details...so let's focus on the badass part"
My father had a meeting for work with this older guy and by the end he got to talking with him to find out that he was the head engineer on the SR-71 and was the first to test fly it!

@officialfeargaming Buddy, I know you're a chairbourne ranger by your user name. Aircraft have nick-names, and "Blackbird" happens to be the nick-name of the SR-71. It is also known as "Habu". Don't pretend you are some kind of expert because you read a wikipedia article. Now shoo boy, you got a big important match on your game, don't miss it!
@TTDMFfreaknew Never heard habu before with relation to an SR-71. I have heard havblu, referring to the F-117 in its early stages of development before it had any other name. Possible confusion there or is habu legit?
@mjm9536 Habu is legit. It was more of a pilot used nick-name, kinda like how F-16 pilots call it the "Viper" instead of "Falcon". Speaking of the F-117, they gave them the callsign "Shabah" which, in arabic, loosley translates to "Ghost of the night", which is probably the most badass name ever.
@gvstaylor Actually, Air Force Chief of Staff General Curtis LeMay preferred the SR (Strategic Reconnaissance) designation and wanted the RS-71 to be named SR-71. Before the July speech, LeMay lobbied to modify Johnson's speech to read SR-71 instead of RS-71. The media transcript given to the press at the time still had the earlier RS-71 designation in places, creating the story that the president had misread the aircraft's designation.
@bradleymhunt ."Strategic Reconn". was Lemays main reason for tolerating the SR-71 in his operational budget, for the Habu was tasked for Reconn. missions after use of Lemays Nuclear Triad, the A/C would fly under SIOP( Single Integrated operational Plan)missions to determine if follow-on strikes were warranted, every Habu crew had to be SIOP certifed annually in the use of this highly classifed war plan......
@pipercub123456 - Lemay was looking for any reason to blow shit up - ANY! He was a crazy dude and thankfully there was a mix of people like him and those with calmer heads.
@SlamDuncDrummer ..Here's crazy..Oct, 1969- Operation "Gaint Lance"-- Nixon using his "Madman Theory of Coercive Diplomacy" ordered the JCS to direct SAC to respond to possible confrontation by the USSR -- SAC responded by ending all training flights, placing all active bombers on high ground alert and rotating 18 B-52s flying 18hr vigils over the pole as a" military signal" to the Soviets to start ending the war in Nam..
@SlamDuncDrummer ..Chrome Dome went on for years, early 1960's thru 1980??and was S.O.P. for S.A.C., the CD flights "loitered" around the North America Continent-- Greenland--Alaska around the -- Dew Line AOC..however Gaint Lance in 1969 involved flying "stabbing approach sorties" around the North Polar Ice Cap towards the Soviet Union in "total secrecy" except to Russian AAW forces.most people don't have a clue for the dangerous games played during the Cold War.thx for the input
@pipercub123456 - I hear ya. My first plane was a 1966 Cessna 150c. I put the STOL kit on it and the 8.50X6 tire, I mean inner-tubes on it :-).
With a good strong head wind I could land in about 10 feet. At times I could actually land in a square box as long as I didn't roll backwards :-).
I too am a wanna be bush pilot but I gave that up in favor of getting somewhere fast. The 337E was the first go around but is inefficient in terms of fuel for speed - only get 25% out of rear engine.
@TTDMFfreaknew i got a new nickname for the sr71..."the asspucker". thats what i would be calling it if i was the lucky pilot assigned to it. or how about..."the lottery". because you would feel like you won it if you got to fly it.
@officialfeargaming and the one of the SR-71s nicknames is "blackbird" just like the F-16 is sometimes called "viper" and the F-117 is called "shaba" you really should do some research before making stupid comments
@meower9 they were top secret for a long time but they were declassified (well at least some of it, who knows what technologies it's hiding!) and has been retired since 1999.

@pipercub123456 - wasn't that "chrome dome"?
SlamDuncDrummer 3 months ago
@SlamDuncDrummer ..Chrome Dome went on for years, early 1960's thru 1980??and was S.O.P. for S.A.C., the CD flights "loitered" around the North America Continent-- Greenland--Alaska around the -- Dew Line AOC..however Gaint Lance in 1969 involved flying "stabbing approach sorties" around the North Polar Ice Cap towards the Soviet Union in "total secrecy" except to Russian AAW forces.most people don't have a clue for the dangerous games played during the Cold War.thx for the input

@pipercub123456 - thanks for the response.
You have the J-3 or the PA-18?
I recently sold my 1969 Cessna 337E and have begun to poke around for a Lancair IV (non-P) at a reasonable price.
