So, for example, religious adoption services that place children exclusively with married couples would be required by law to place children with persons of the same sex who are civilly “married.” Religious marriage counselors would be denied their professional accreditation for refusing to provide counseling in support of same-sex “married” relationships.
These conflicts bear serious consequences. They will arise in a broad range of legal contexts, because altering the civil definition of “marriage” does not change one law, but hundreds, even thousands, at once. By a single stroke, every law where rights depend on marital status—such as employment discrimination, employment benefits, adoption, education, healthcare, elder care, housing, property, and taxation—will change so that same-sex sexual relationships must be treated as if they were marria

Usually when we interpret the scriptures we start from individual verses. That gets us immediately into the details, but sometimes we can miss the big picture that way.
You are probably aware that the Book of Mormon often incorporates phrases and short quotations from the Bible; what follows is a list of every time the Nephite record includes an extended biblical quotation of two or more sequential verses. (The references in bold are those noted in the chapter headings of the official 1981 edition.).
I have been a member of the church my entire life, and I've even lived in Utah since I was 5. I've been to hundreds of ward activities, and I have eaten and even enjoyed "funeral potatoes," but I had no idea how to make them. How embarrassing. At 30 years old with several children of my own, I couldn't mix cheese and potatoes and other stuff and end up with this Mormon staple.
A couple of years ago, I got a call from the compassionate service leader in our ward. She asked me if I would be willing to provide some food for a funeral the next day. I agreed to do it. She then informed me I needed to make a pan of "funeral potatoes." My eyes twitched from side to side; I silently panicked. Oh, no, I was cornered.
Very useful materials for both feeding testimonies and answering questions are available through BYU's Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship (formerly FARMS) and the independent Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR), including many things readily accessible on their websites.
The best therapy in such cases is repentance and/or immersion in the scriptures, prayer, service and worship.
But there are also intellectual issues, matters of history and fact, that can weaken or destroy faith. Here, too, the Spirit is essential. However, troubled believers can't always dispose of their doubts simply by redoubling their efforts or dismiss them for the sake of believing family and friends. They must be faced and, in some sense at least, dealt with.
Jason F. Wright, New York Times bestselling author and Mormon Times columnist, joked about how his father performed little acts of kindness for people, that, as a child, Wright had no patience for. "He wanted to open a door for a woman who was clear across the parking lot." .
But through his father's example he learned that life isn't necessarily about "big moments" but rather "step by step and line upon line." After his father passed away, a woman e-mailed Wright to tell him how much she appreciated his father always opening the door for her
Challenges and temptations are coming at our teenagers with the speed and power of a freight train. As we are reminded in the family proclamation, parents are responsible for the protection of their children. 1 That means spiritually as well as physically.
Baptism by immersion is “the introductory ordinance of the gospel, and must be followed by baptism of the Spirit in order to be complete” (Bible Dictionary, “Baptism”). The Prophet Joseph Smith explained that “baptism is a holy ordinance preparatory to the reception of the Holy Ghost
We then seek to justify our lazy or rebellious behavior. We tell ourselves we’re not really doing anything that wrong, that it doesn’t really matter, and that nothing all that bad will result from letting go just a little from the iron rod. Perhaps we console ourselves with the thought that everyone else is doing it—or doing worse—and we won’t be negatively affected anyway.
As members of the Church of Jesus Christ and as bearers of the priesthood, we know the commandments and standards we have covenanted to uphold. When we choose another path from the one we know to be right, as taught by our parents and leaders and as confirmed to our own hearts by the Holy Ghost, it is like stepping onto the desert sand in flip-flops instead of shoes

Eighteen-year-old Eva Roding acknowledges the difficulty of living according to her standards while be surrounded by those who do not share them, but she's grateful for the blessings her choices bring.
Strong moral character results from consistent correct choices in the trials and testing of life. Such choices are made with trust in things that are believed and when acted upon are confirmed.
In the early 1980s, the Mormon Church ambitiously accelerated its worldwide push to build temples, opening them in faraway nations such as Japan, Sweden and Chile.
With Saturday’s groundbreaking of a new temple in Gilbert, those expansion efforts have finally reached the Valley.
In 1873, Brother Napela's wife, Kitty, contracted leprosy. "Jonathan Napela chose to leave his safe harbor and move with his sweet wife to the leper colony. He loved her so much and could not leave her alone in that dreaded place. Jonathan Napela also contracted leprosy, but even in his own suffering he continued to serve the temporal and spiritual interests of his people in the leper colony. He died in 1879, two years before his sweet and eternal wife."
POMEROY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the latest to send supplies to the Eden Ridge community, where families were left homeless by a Sept. 16 tornado system.
Food, hygiene items and other provisions are coming into the community “hand over fist,” Emergency Management Agency Director Robert Byer said Thursday.
"While watching the event, my heart was filled to overflowing with gratitude as I witnessed what the Lord was accomplishing in the hearts and souls of His precious sons and daughters," Elder Cardon said. "God inspired and directed this marvelous event. It is a joy to see the lives of so many blessed and their testimonies strengthened."
1) BYU's Robert Millet teaches evasion/disrespect/deception at BYU!
YouTube-Lying for the Lord: watch?v=Zzui8zUf4SQ
Millett sez if LDS don't like non-LDS's question, answer the one the LDSer WANTED asked! ETC.
2) LDS Church says if LDS don't believe, testify they do anyway to others & that helps getting the LDS a testimony- that's lying & emotional self-conditioning: LDS apostle Boyd K. Packer, The Candle of the Lord, Ensign 1/1983 & Liahona 1/2007
omiolo -Here's some of BYU & LD apologist Robert Millet: "I never answer that question [they ask], but, rather, answer the question they should have asked. That's why I, I group this under 'Answer The Right Question'." He also advocates when someone asks a question of LDS Church teaches men can become Gods/"like God", don't answer his question, but divert to what U want: "I just answered the question he should [?!] have asked!"
Disrespect the non-LDS, ignore/evade to whatever answer they desire
@harry4health typically an HONEST quote does NOT need to ADD words and put as much commentary as possible in. I guess if I snippet anything and add my own words and commentary. I can make ANYTHING say ANYTHING. Good job if that was your objective.
@omiolo - Brilliant in evasion (not really brilliant) & U aren't clear on what U refer to. U plagiarize from LDS sources & do not attribute them. FACT. The last one if from LDS apostle BR McConkie that I referred to-FACT. I did a search on a phrase from your post & came up with different sources. UR the one who used the words of another person in Y UR mouth. Odd concoction U blathered. ALL U need to do is use quote marks so it doesn't look like UR own words.
@omiolo - U chose not to watch a 5 minute vid of the talk so U know the words. UR choice. That's UR fault. Sorry, but 500 characters a post isn't sufficient. U want me to send quotes to UR Inbox? I can.
The video I reference is about 5 minutes. Shouldn't be a strain on UR time & efforts.
MILLET:
"Whenever a person asks me an antagonistic question, I NEVER answer THAT question, but, rather, answer the question they SHOULD have asked. That's why I, I group this under 'Answer The Right Question'."
"That worm fence was badly in need of maintenance," said Park Ranger Lowe, "but the organized staff of the Church helped tremendously." In all, nearly a mile of fence was repaired by the youth, and several miles of roadside and trails were cleaned and groomed. Madeline Rhoads of Berryville was pleased by the work she and her young companions accomplished over the several days of Conference. "Looking back," she said, "it feels good, like we're making it a better place."
The Cabrinha brothers from Hauula, Pono and Ammon, enjoyed the trip very much. Pono is a sophomore in vocal studies who said he liked interacting with the group. “The overall experience was great,” he said, “because being around the other choir members strengthened the unity of the choir as we conveyed the message of peace and love.”
I think a milestone took place in 1984 when one of the members of the Church Historical Department staff, Dean C. Jessee published The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith. Dean Jessee, as a part of his assignment with the History Division—later transferred to Brigham Young University to be the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for LDS History, was assigned to the papers of Joseph Smith. And he began the preparation of a documentary edition of Joseph Smith's personal writings
Adam is the foremost spirit next to the Lord Jehovah. He is the archangel, the captain of the Lord's hosts who led the armies of heaven when Lucifer rebelled; he is Michael, the mightiest of all the spirit host save only the Lord Jesus; and he came to earth as Adam, the first man.
Christ is the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten in the flesh, and the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. He is the Redeemer of the world and the Savior of men. He is the Son of God and is one with the Father in power, might, and dominion.
- LDS Jesus is first literal spirit son of Heavenly Father & HEAVENLY MOTHER, 'our' "Heavenly Parents". Jesus & Lucifer/Satan- they are spirit brothers (affirmed in 2010 Ensigns)
- Only begotten in the flesh: LDS Jesus was literally begotten of Heavenly Father & Mary as we are of mortal fathers/parents
- Savior: Only real gift is resurrection. We have to expend our best efforts/do all works we can do before grace does rest & we're saved
omiolo - Aren't you the childish idiot that misrepresents others & can't give real answers to so many questions, dodge & give multiple quotes, unattributed from LDS magazines of fluffy stories & comments to get fluffy emotional responses but dodge evidence?
UR also immature, since Paul said not to judge those outside the church. Since U FEEL LDS Church is the only true church, shouldn't U be dealing with other things- like giving answers for those who ask questions- 1 Pet 3:15?
omiolo - U show UR dishonesty & deceptiveness by skipping issues and going after personal attacks - like liberals do to conservative, GOPers & those who disagree?
R U sure UR not a Fat Leftist or liberal?
How many Gods R in LDS Godhead?
Does LDS Church teach we can become gods with all power?
Does the LDS Church's official materials affirm LDS Heavenly Father has a literal goddess wive, our Heavenly Mother & we can become god & goddess "heavenly parents" procreating spirit children as They do?
The church's massive indexing effort is bringing many of those original source documents online. As these records are made available in digital form, they can be searched through the "Record Search pilot" program hosted on the original FamilySearch Web site.
For now, FamilySearch and New FamilySearch need to be used in conjunction with each other. But eventually, those resources will be combined into one site.
"In the near future, we look to merge those," Nauta said.
New FamilySearch, however, is not a one-stop-shop for family history work -- at least not yet.
The site is not designed to uncover the identities of missing relatives. Such investigative work requires original source records, such as birth, marriage, census or death records. New FamilySearch currently has no mechanism for searching such records.
The church's history in Orange County indicates the first stake in Orange County was formed in 1954 by John C. Dalton II. The first area-specific stake was begun in Santa Ana in 1957, but renamed the Orange Stake in 1968, according to county LDS public relations director Joseph Bentley.
Heber M. Wells, Utah's first governor, gave an inaugural address, and various patriotic songs were part of the program, including Edward Stephens' "Utah We Love Thee," written especially for the occasion.
In 1976, the year of the national bicentennial celebration, Statehood Day was marked with a re-enactment of the original celebration with Gov. Calvin Rampton and LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball highlighting the event, followed by a Bicentennial Ball in the Capitol Rotunda.
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney ran for president, Sen. Harry Reid became Senate Majority leader, and pundit Glenn Beck offered a play-by-play account of the battle lines that separated their political parties.
The humanitarian efforts of the church were also brought into high relief over the past 10 years as the faithful offered money, time and energy to help alleviate suffering caused by earthquakes, wildfires, famine, war, hurricanes and floods around the world.
But as the church as an institution was becoming better known, some individual members of the church also found themselves spirited into national prominence.
LOS ANGELES - In the end, Xavier Su'a-Filo chose faith over football.
UCLA's freshman phenom offensive tackle said after the Bruins' 30-21 EagleBank Bowl win over Temple on Tuesday that he was leaving school and embarking on his Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission.
Later in the book of Alma, Oliver began putting "e's" in place of the second and third vowels. Oliver corrected his spelling and moved on. Eventually, he quit making corrections (since the first usage set the correct standard) and generally continued to misspell "Amalickiah" as "Ameleckiah."
The only concession to modernity is a public address system a tour guide uses to share the saga of a community's extraordinary endurance in the face of religious intolerance. It's a tale teeming with hardship, intrigue and even murder.
"They were homeless, poverty-stricken and needing a place to call home," says the guide, Colleen Saville, of the people who did call this river bottomland "home" for several years.
"There is no magic tool or magic word or anything like that. It's just wanting to explore and understand different systems while you try to find problems in them that you can use to compromise the computer and gain access. It's all about trying to find little mistakes that someone might have made or overlooked and leveraging them."
SALT LAKE CITY 21 December 2009 As of this month, the Perpetual Education Fund (PEF) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has helped over 40,000 men and women throughout the world receive education, training and employment opportunities to better their lives and the lives of their families.
Sometimes the best things start small and then keep growing because of popular demand. That's what's happened with the annual Christmas concert presented by the Escondido and Escondido South stakes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
For Joseph Fielding McConkie, a true understanding of the scriptures "has always sustained and lifted my soul." The misreading of scripture, however, "has been a form of torture that far exceeds the reading of bad poetry -- or of poetry badly understood."
Heaps signed on the first day of the early signing period for mid-year transfers and early enrollees from high school, which will allow him to enroll at BYU in January and participate in spring drills. He'll be one of the candidates vying to replace senior Max Hall.
Last June, Heaps, wide receiver Ross Apo and linebacker Zac Stout held a press conference in Salt Lake City to announce they were verbally committing to BYU.
As part of its Hispanic Initiative, the Church annually sponsors a cultural or spiritual program in Spanish in the three areas of the Church in Utah. Last year, for example, a festive amalgamation of folkloric song and dance entitled "Recibid al Rey" ("Receive the King") took place in the Tabernacle on Temple Square.
He concluded with his testimony of the Church-service missionary program: "The Lord has taught us how to bless the lives of others through a mission."
Elder Reynaldo Diaz Rubio has served several Church-service missions. Currently, Elder Rubio serves as the Church-service missionary coordinator in the Mexico Area.?In an interview with the area presidency, he was asked, "How do you see yourselves in ten years?"?He replied that he sees himself "actively participating in the building up of the kingdom of God."
I know he does that is why he helped me open my eyes to the truth that Jesus is the only way not a religion. I left the LDS church 3 months ago because I realize that my faith was in the church and Joseph Smith. It requires more faith in the Church and Joseph than Jesus to be a Mormon. My faith in Jesus grew stronger. I don't need to be a mormon to be saved.
Nothing untruth about my personal experiences. God loves you too!! I grew up LDS, and all it did was lead me to believe in a corporate system. It did not lead me to a personal relationship with Christ.
for your types, that typically means that you are accountable to NO ONE and your version of God lets you do whatever sin you want and you are NOT accountable for it.
That's what people like you who lives in legalistic way wants to think about God's grace. Sorry if sometimes you are offended. I am not antimormon at all. Omiolo I can send you a video by Bob Millet telling members to lie and to not answer questions by outsiders. If you are very much indoctrinated, you may not think that there is something wrong with what he was saying on the video.
You can watch Bob Millet on the video I sent you and hear the quotes coming out from his own mouth. Isn't that better than me typing it? At least you would know that I am not lying and you saw the videos with your own eyes. Do not be afraid to watch the video because if you are so indoctrinated by mormonism, you might even think that there is nothing wrong with what he said. For me what he said is so wrong but maybe to you it is ok. Just watch the video would you?
And correction, I am not anti Mormon. I am just someone who grew up as a Mormon, and studied mormonism on my own. I love mormons, most of my family are still mormon. If these things makes you mad, I am sorry, truth hurts sometimes. It also hurts me when I was learning all the different things about the beliefs I grew up with. Truth is truth, I have to accept them as truth.
How did my youtube account existence meant to attack Mormons? Tell me how? Because it says exmo? Because I am telling people that Jesus is the ONLY way not a religion?
Watch the video I sent you and you would know what I meant about Bob Millet. He is telling people not to answer questions about Mormon doctrines but to build faith in Joseph Smith. Not to answer questions is ok? To build faith in Joseph Smith is ok?
"Whenever a person ask me an antagonistic question, I never answer that question but rather I answer the question they should have asked... The world may not know this, but the issue isn't Adam God, the issue isn't mountain meadows massacre, the issue isn't plural marriage, the issue facing the religious world today is was Joseph smith called of God. That is the single and most important issue to determine." - Robert Millet
Robert Millet is a Professor a consummate teacher.
To call it DISHONEST to teach people correct principles, especially those who are blinded by their ignorance DISHONEST is IGNORANT on your part.
EVERY serious teaching profession does that. Especially in the sciences. If someone challenges my research or the science I represent, especially a STUDENT, I help them by going over the basic principles so they can see where in their thinking they have reached an error.
Sorry but truth is in the Bible, not with Millet. Nobody is antagonizing others. Adam God doctrine, Mountain Meadows Massacre, and Plural Marriage are valid questions of people outside the church. The honest answer to these questions if these are being asked,is that YES, early church leaders preached Adam is God, YES Mountain Meadows Massacre happened and lead by early faithful members of the church, and YES plural marriage is a Mormon Doctrine that was stopped to keep UT statehood.
Exactly, the TRUTH is with God. The Bible is the word of God. Not my own interpretation because the Bible can interpret itself. God is that powerful omiolo.
You believe that the Bible is the word of God right? How come you are not defending the word of God? Because you believe that it is not translated correctly? Which verses are not translated correctly? My former seminary teacher, bishop, mission president etc... doesn't know which are not translated correctly, maybe you have the answers.
which ever you want. King James Version if you want. If you can tell me which verses are translated incorrectly in the bible then you are better than my former Seminary teachers, bishops, stake presidents, and mission president.
If you cannot do that, I suggest that you start defending Jesus the word of God the Bible instead of defending religions.
Find out the difference between religion and redemption.
The number forty and two in 2 Chron 22:2 is evidently the mistake of a copyist. In other words, since Ahaziahs father Jehoram died at age 40 (2 Chron 21:20), it would have been impossible for Ahaziah to succeed him at an age of 42! Therefore, It is awesome that we have the Hebrew Bible available now for people to see the correction.
What else? Don't tell me just because of this one verse you wouldn't trust the Bible.
That is not my intention my friend. I said wouldn't trust the Bible" because growing up as LDS I know in my heart that I did not trust the Bible because of beliefs in the church that it is not translated correctly, and that the Book of Mormon is the most correct book in the world compared to any other books, which downgrades the Bible.
What other mistranslations do you see in the Bible? Let's try to communicate without personal attacks.
What sins are you talking about? Oh I remember, you have a temple recommend which means, you don't do many sins compared to me right? You feel proud of yourself not committing those sins? Are you proud that you are better than me and most people in this world?
Do you feel proud of yourself not committing too many sins by keeping the LDS church standards? Do you feel proud of yourself when you are able to obtain a temple recommend? Are you proud of being a Mormon and getting all these different priesthood office? Do you feel proud that you are not me a sinner like you suggested?
Antagonistic question if ask about mormon doctrines and history of the church like Adam God doctrine, mountain meadows massacre and plural marriage? I don't think so
Is it the most important issue? If you're faith is to Joseph Smith, yes it is the most important issue. To a Christian ears it is not the most important issue facing the religious world today.
Just watch the video so that you know I am not lying that he said those words and so that you can hear him in context.

I have been a member of the church my entire life, and I've even lived in Utah since I was 5. I've been to hundreds of ward activities, and I have eaten and even enjoyed "funeral potatoes," but I had no idea how to make them. How embarrassing. At 30 years old with several children of my own, I couldn't mix cheese and potatoes and other stuff and end up with this Mormon staple.
omiolo 1 year ago
A couple of years ago, I got a call from the compassionate service leader in our ward. She asked me if I would be willing to provide some food for a funeral the next day. I agreed to do it. She then informed me I needed to make a pan of "funeral potatoes." My eyes twitched from side to side; I silently panicked. Oh, no, I was cornered.

If you cannot do that, I suggest that you start defending Jesus the word of God the Bible instead of defending religions.
Find out the difference between religion and redemption.

2 Kings 8:26 says "Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign..."
2 Chronicles 22:2 says "Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign..."

Good Job Omiolo!!

"wouldn't trust the Bible"
it is that kind of GARBAGE statement that makes it clear that you LACK integrity and soley are here out of SPITE.
I am sure you have a happy life....

I am sorry if you think I am annoying you.
Let's try to communicate without personal attacks.

please do NOT push YOUR sins unto others!
Maybe if you would have learned the truth, you would NOT have to be where you are now.
You could still be married......

@omiolo
The truth is with Jesus not Joseph. Wake up!
What sins are you talking about? Oh I remember, you have a temple recommend which means, you don't do many sins compared to me right? You feel proud of yourself not committing those sins? Are you proud that you are better than me and most people in this world?

@exmo81
The truth is where ever Jesus dedicates, NOT where a spiteful person deems it.
I will NOT reject the servants of Jesus Christ because you like to SPIN!
omiolo 2 years ago 5
Sorry Omiolo, but where did I spin?
Do you feel proud of yourself not committing too many sins by keeping the LDS church standards? Do you feel proud of yourself when you are able to obtain a temple recommend? Are you proud of being a Mormon and getting all these different priesthood office? Do you feel proud that you are not me a sinner like you suggested?
Just curious

"Jesus not Joseph"

Antagonistic question if ask about mormon doctrines and history of the church like Adam God doctrine, mountain meadows massacre and plural marriage? I don't think so
Is it the most important issue? If you're faith is to Joseph Smith, yes it is the most important issue. To a Christian ears it is not the most important issue facing the religious world today.
Just watch the video so that you know I am not lying that he said those words and so that you can hear him in context.
exmo81 2 years ago 3
you ANTImormon types love to LIE about what people say. He does NOT tell ANYONE to LIE.
Why don't you quote where he says to LIE???
I tell you why you will NOT quote it, because it does NOT exist!

This man is a giant among scholars and I believe he is doing his best to help the other Christian faiths to try and live their religion.
