I m going to build my own pc with an AMD phenom ii x6 3.2Ghrz processor, radeon HD 6950 2gb video card, 2TB HDD, 12gb ram(3x 4gb). I m thinking of getting a 650w-750w PSU is that enough? what do you think man, I please need help
That calculator is kind of complicated but anyway... It seems that I have a system that requires something around 450W and I have a 850W PSU. I think I've taking something a bit too powerful. :)
I have the Corsair TX650W on a Phenom 9750, Radeon HD3870, 4gb's of Dominator, 2 WD Raptors an 1 WD for backup, and 1 dvd burner. At least get a 750 unless you plan on going SLI in the future, then you wanna go higher. That extreme calculator will give you an amount nowhere near whats recommended.
ASUS P5Q PRO Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Corsair Dominator 2x 2GB, DDR2, Dual Channel, PC2-8500 (1066MHz), 240-pin ASUS ENGTX260 TOP WD Caviar Black 500GB LG GH20NS10 Super Multi NZXT Crafted Series Tempest + Logitech G15 Logitech G7 Laser Cordless Mouse Corsair Dominator Airflow What would you guys call this rig (from A2-scale). - Have plans of buying NorthQ Black Magic Flex 650W.
What would you recommend as an energy efficient mobo for a AMD X2 4850E(no gaming)Same with HDD and Optical Drive(I want energy efficient to the max!) Ive already seen an energy efficient PSU and CPU-the OCZ StealthXtreme 500W and the AMD X2 4850E
What is the bandwidth n usb2.0 compared to SATA and regular ATA?im asking becuse im playing games off of my external HDD and iwonder if im getting slowdown from it.
The real consideration is the amount of AMPs the PSU can deliver (and how stable the voltage is), especially on the 6-pin, 4pin and +12V outputs. And efficiency, I think you should have mentioned the 80PLUS certified like you do on the PSU reviews
You really shouldn't skimp on your power supply, as it is one of the most important parts of your computer. My 750 watt powers an Intel Q9450 stock clock speed, and a stock eVGA 8800 GTX.
so true, people always skimp on the case and the PSU, but the best part of my build is my coolermaster wavemaster case and Modular PSU, made build the system a breeze.
if i have a 700w psu, but i only consume 160w peak, should i get a 200w psu then? how much more efficient is the 200w over the 700w when i only need a 160w psu.
Say, hypothetically, you were going to set up four HD 4870s on a 700 series AMD board, you would need eight six-pin PCI-E connectors, right? Which power supply out there supports so many? I've been looking at the top of the line 1200W+ PSUs and they seem to have a maximum of six six-pin PCI-E connectors.
you are clearly a moron, trip gtx280 (which there are no drivers for any way) with qx9770 might only use 850w at max, but running a 850w PSU would be dumb, i wouldnt want to use less than 900w with your theoretical system + whoknow what hardware is around the cornor you dont want to upgrade if you think ahead.
I have a RX-530SS (530 watts) power supply. And run all this: a q6600 CPU, P5q, 2g's of 1200 mhz DDR2 ramm, geforce 9600 S.O.C. video card, a dvd/cd write, 360gb sata hard, and a nice 5 fan case. System cost was $650.00 w/rebates and a very fast system for the cash.
it's not just about the wattage guys, it doens't really tell anything.. 12v rail is the most important. Invest for quality psu, not just wattage, there's huge difference between the manufacturers
great thanks for the vid i was wondering how much wattage componants need, but i never would have guessed the motherboard only uses 15 - 30w thats wierd to me i would of thought the north/south bridges would have used loads
If mobo has 8pin connector for the cpu and your psu has 4 pin connection is it safe to connect that or should my friend get some kind of 4pin to 8pin extension?

I'm getting a new rig soon, and I'm really unsure of what PSU to get. It's going to be fairly high end, with the following components:
Asus P6T Deluxe
Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz (and probably OC'd)
Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler
Corsair 6GB DDR3 1333 MHz
WD VelociRaptor 150 GB
WD Caviar Black 1 TB
XFX GeForce GTW 295
I was thinking a Corsair 850W for this setup. Any opinions on it? Will it be enough?

Yeah, it should. Some powersupplies can more than the specs. (max. +50W), but they're being really hot!

biggest waste of money ever.
the most you will ever need is 750 watts which is pushing it.
3x GTX280's and a QX9770 Oc'd with a decent case will be pushing 750 watts.
My PC Power and Cooling has a maximum power of 850 Watts for 100% load.
