  • Irish brown bears from the Ice Age period between 10,000 and 38,000 years ago had the maternal DNA that is now seen in every polar bear.Older pre-Ice Age brown bears, dating to between 43,000 and 38,000 years, had a different genetic signature matching that of modern bears from Eastern Europe. Remains of the last ancient brown bears in Ireland, from 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, had yet another genetic fingerprint seen in modern western European bears.

  • Modern polar bears share a distinct DNA sequence, passed down the female line, with their now-extinct brown ancestors.Modern polar bears share a distinct DNA sequence, passed down the female line, with their now-extinct brown ancestors.Polar bears may have moved into what is now Ireland when the region was experiencing much cooler temperatures than it is today. At the same time, brown bears may have been pushed towards the coast by advancing ice sheets.

  • I am irish therefore i am a polar bear

  • how more awesome can we get

  • yeah

  • Yummm sarah palin

  • Well its near bloody cold enough here anyways for the polar bears to live here in Ireland!

  • Did you see in the news, recently, in the last couple of years.

    nope.jpg

  • the bottom line is to protect the polar bears from extinction..

  • what does she says at the end? whats in us?

  • Top of the morning to ya.... GRRRRRRRR

  • @violet2 Oh shut up.

  • @violet2 strong trolling. 8/10

  • Look global warming is not a new climate situation there has been many periods of global warming and cooling. In fact at the end of the American revolution we were at the end of what was known as the little ice age there was one famous year called the year with out summer it snowed in June.I think polar bears are just brown bear that are taking advantage of a food source.Seals and walrus Are man made green house gasses effecting this warming period probably..

  • this is total bullshit. -pardon my language.

  • Wow

  • @dabigez357

Yeah! So let's kill all of them idiot scientists! What do they know?

You're a fool, you know that?

  • Wow... rish sophisticated white people folks!

  • Why? enlightened me further. I'm hybrid also.

  • now that congress is making bestiality legal again (it's true, don;t ask me why) polar bears can breed with brown bears, or with Sarah Palin!

  • Ah sure, they must like a pint of Guinness now and then!

  • "There won't be polar bears!" :'(

  • I guess with polar bears its - "once you go brown, you never go back"?

  • If the polar bears mated with the brown bears, the hybrid brown bear mates with another hybrid wont you get some just brown, and some just white.?

  • After watching this video I am still asking the same question I asked beforehand.

"How are polarbears Irish?" I mean they did say bears mixed in Ireland but HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT?!?! Seriously Nat Geo needs to get their act together or no one will take them seriously anymore...

  • @kidindacardboardmask I think they loosely refer to the fact that at the time of the Ice Age the continents had yet to break up into the separate continents we now know as Ireland, England, USA, etc. Where Ireland was at the time of the Ice Age I have no idea.

  • they are Irish ???

man ,, how i could not see their red hair !!

  • almost gone

  • There talking bollocks!

  • @RATM2084 their not THERE

  • Polar bears? Does that mean they dissolve in water? Hmm

  • What a load of sh**.

  • Global warming/ climate change is a scam..our moon aswell as other planets in our solar system, their polar ice caps are receeding too and we dont live there... Common sense dictates that the sun is the cause.. But keep listening to these "experts"! Even tho most scientist know its a crock of shit, they want their funding..

  • @dabigez357 It is true that ice caps on mars are receding too and even if humans weren't here on this planet, they would still recede. However, human CO2 and CO2 equivalents are contributing to the receding. No body said it was purely of human impact.

  • @Nelmistro you keep believing that...these nuts have already openly started to blame humans as the major cause like breathing out CO2 and domestic animals releasing to much methane etc. most of mainstream sciences are pseudo sciences always theory.. to pretend they know all.. when in reality they know nothing, all i am saying is watch out if you read enough of their crap you'll see we humans are what they want snuffed out!

  • This guy is clearly a classy cowboy

  • Do they mean irish ppl are bears? lol

  • F.T.P

  • Fuck. EVERYONE's Irish...

  • @Ralex004 too true

  • Are Polar bear important to the planet? Do we need them like some say weed need and must have bees to survive? If not then I really don't see why we should care if they go extinct. A lot of animals have gone extinct in the Earth history. Maybe I'm missing something tho.

  • @melo15813 Well, i think it's more about respect as Earth is the polar bears planet as well and if we are doing something that is killing them and making their home unsustainable for them, we should do something about it.

  • earth's greenbelt zone, bio-diversity.).then polar bear population migrated to north ice climate..why?

  • How's this live?

  • @Lolman22 google

    So hard to use

    Polar best counts r decreasing

If ur so afraid of looking it up urself what can I say

  • So will black people turn into white people if the climate is right?..... Wait, that already happened.

  • I'm not related to know polar bears!

  • Ireland is cool.

  • @Buckpwnz

Yeah, that 'lawsuit' was actually a petition which used the names of 30,000 people with any kind of science-based degree.

And the best part? Those names were used without permission. And many of the people were dead.

    Try again, rightard!

  • Too many conservatives below, what they doing on a channel with intellectual science?

Next thing u know global warming is a fruad...

Ooohhh wait... N no polar best populations arnt not an all time high, they can be found drowned because there was no iceberg foothold, with no place to hunt

Really, I though people watch natgeo cuz they were smart sciency people...

    Sigh

  • Man... I came for the cute polar bear pictures...

  • So, perhaps if the Brown Bear mates with the Polar Bear the offspring will be a Bi -Polar Bear. LOL

  • @BrowseMyChannel ha ha ha u just made me spit my beer all over my laptop v funny!

  • The first time polar bears where endangered was from over hunting. Seems that every rich person in the world needed a polar bear rug or two.And there have been several species of polar bear in history.A million years ago there was a polar bear that was twice the size of today's polar bears.brown bears turn into polar bears whenever the weather is right. I think global warming is part of the natural cycle of weather.

  • @22CaliberHitters

Yes, because 99 percent of climatologist agree that global warming is a fraud, right?

Oh, wait. It's the other way around. Might want to turn off Fox News, genius.

  • @CaptainLumpyDog is that why the guy who owns the weather network and 30,000 other scientist were suing Al Gore? lol

  • Cool Story bro

  • I love it when pple make up fascinating stories to build up their own personal ego. Ahhh, 500,000 years ago, we meet again.

  • @Xmokko lol

  • @Xmokko such utter crap, and she sounds so sure...If your not someone grounded on facts, you'd believe this BS.

  • @22CaliberHitters NAT GEO FAILIN HARD with this BS !!!

  • @22CaliberHitters high as ever? what's your source? Who counts the polar bear population around the world? Provide some sources before spouting bull shit

we just had a story last week about a polar bear killing a baby polar bear

  • @22CaliberHitters Actually the Polar bear populations are less healthy. What source are you citing for saying that the populations are as high as ever? Hell, and the ice caps ARE receding, even on Mars, but to just say its not happening is BS too. Honestly all the sources I've seen show Polar Bears dying from starvation and a lot of them are eating their young during the shortened times that the Polar Ice Caps get over everything.

  • @22CaliberHitters give me a source, or I consider your statement invalid.

  • @22CaliberHitters From wikipedia: Of the 19 recognized polar bear subpopulations, eight are declining, three are stable, one is increasing, and seven have insufficient data, as of 2009.

  • @22CaliberHitters

read up buddy, they are on the decline

  • @22CaliberHitters source please; otherwise I'd call bullshit

  • @pudgeypigeon thank you. this guy is clueless

  • All the polar bears need now is a bottle guiness.

  • i clicked this video to see polars bear not people talking :/

  • @Aizen52 Polar Bears can't speak English though,

  • @Metexie you could have tell me that before!

  • I thought this was very interesting; Nat Geo should do more of these interviews!

  • That's awesome, thnaks for this.

  • Hey a video that isn't blocked in my country.

  • their soo gray and dull :(n if i was making a videoor documentary about bears i would dress up as one :L

  • well she said five hundred thousand years ago the ancestor lived on these lands. But Ireland didn't even existed at that time >:O SEriously why humans need to even give nationality to animals!!! The polar bear couldn't care less about those things. xD

  • @Nuage151 Well, I think she meant the land that would be Ireland. It doesn't need to be Ireland that time. It's just the land. Well, that's what I think... The video states Ireland I think to make the matter looks interesting. Maybe. :P

  • If polar bears are Irish, then Greasily Bears are British.

  • @RAMEE406 Greasy bears are probably British.

  • @RAMEE406 ...and panda bears are scottish! :)

  • @RAMEE406 Grizzly* Not grease - ily. lol.

  • @hassmann2000 thanks lol

  • @RAMEE406 and what are the Russian bears? Red with crossed hammer and sickle?

  • @RAMEE406 Grizzly Bears, not Greasly bears ahaha

  • @RAMEE406 grizzly

  • @RAMEE406 Its Grizzly LMAO!

  • @RAMEE406 And Black Bears are American!

  • @RAMEE406 Grizzly*

  • there going home too, the Irish are going into a ice age. LUVBUG

  • 1ro. ;)

  • Top o' the mornin' to ya!

  • Don't say first when you aren't!

    You look like an idiot

  • It seems like extinction is a part of the life cycle. You can't save something that is not meant to be saved. Can you imagine if scientists were around to save the dinosaur? We would have a big mess right now.

  • @tjw1963 Yet we do try to save those that are going extinct because of human actions. Saying they are not meant to be saved is implying that we didn't cause global warming that makes sea ice melt or habitat reduction in polar bear habitat. Overall protecting species is about increasing diversity in order to keep the complicated natural processes and cycles in balance.

  • @tjw1963 but polar bears' nowadays extinction is humans' fault.

  • Freaking love polar bears.

  • first

  • First of all, why do we exist in the first place?

  • I like turtles

  • @Soilpt I like trains

  • First, not to be a dumbass like you guys

  • first

  • First :D
