"Our temple is sound we fight our battles with music drums like thunder cymbals like lighting banks of electronic equipment like nuclear missiles of sound. We have guitars instead of tommy-guns"
The words of Wally Hope founder of the first Stonehenge Peoples Free Festival.
No wonder Thatcher was frightened of the hippies.....
The Stoney festival energy went down after the trashing of 85 but people became more politically active and were more of a nuisance when they started climbing trees and living in tunnels under road projects..
Our local solstice gathering this winter is on Midsummer Hill on the Malverns if anyone fancies it :)
I'm not too sure about the guitars and glowsticks; that could just as well have been an American hippie music festival, but I do love knowing that England's true, original religion can still be celebrated.
theres no real observation of the shadows struck at the solstices, probebly the most important part of the celebration. they did not build the henge for the coming of the hippies... bongos didgeridoos and glowsticks... shame
Sorry for being negative, but or me, a trip to the stones when no one but myself is here to really understand the true nature and beauty of such an ancient and exceptional artifact is what stone henge is all about. The solstice has turned in to an egotistical self loathing occasion where people with no real understanding of the solstace create, what should be an exceptionally beautiful and spiritual occasion, a boozed up party for non-conformist wannabe anarchists.
pendref, even the druids don't seem to be happy with establishing a connection with the stones. In fact, not one of the druids I have ever met there have a spiritual aura at all; they are pantomine caricatures of themselves with their colourful "costumes". Better though that every man and his dog turn up, play odd music, think they're being spiritual and go home than nothing happen at all.
Pendref, i must admit i didn't like it when people could run amok around the stones carving on them and ruining what is really a very sacred site but the solstice's are a time for celebration for pagans and the true people that believe in what paganism really means would never deface the stones but just go there to celebrate the turning of the seasons and give thanks to our sun for the life it gives us all.
damn hippies, why can't the solstice be a peacful beautiful thing. It always has to be ruined and taken over people who destroy the sheer calmness and beauty of the whole experience
