This is why you NEVER meddle in the affairs of Celtic Women, especially those who are daughters of the ruler of the Iceni! Yes, she died in battle, but she inspired women to revolt against oppression for centuries after, including the Celts. Celtic women rivaled men in strength and scared the day-lights out of the romans. Rome may have conquered Pretan (the real name of Britain), but they never conquered the fighting spirit in the Celts, and certainly not in Celtic women.
Invade, wipe out the natives, steal their riches and land, re-write history to make them look despicable, and its okay because your people is the master race.
@MarkArandjus The Romans are not completely like that. They preferred to assimilate the local population. To win them over with riches and trade. They only massacre out of necessity bec. those people resisted. You can't call Romans Nazis without calling just about every other civilization Nazis. The Spaniards with the Aztecs, the Americans with the Native Indians, the Mongolians, the Chinese Dynasties, The Russian Tsars.
@CrimsonGuard1992 "win them over with riches and trade" The Celts had a whole system of roads they used for their organised trade, the Romans were their regular clients, not to mention the Celts had over 400 gold mines and their own gold coins and were quite wealthy on their own. One of Cezar's main reasons for his conquest of Gaul was because he was indebted up to his neck.
And after the genocide they make themselves look better saying they were the bringers of civilization, like all invaders.
@MarkArandjus I'm not saying the Celts are inferior but the fact is the Romans did try to win them over with stuff. Even the documentary said so. And "megalomaniac ego-trip conquering the world and wiping out cultures"??? What do you think the Celts did before Rome's rise to power? The Gauls sacked Rome. How about the Goth, the Vandals, the Huns, the Franks?! And of course Rome took Gaul for the gold. That is what empires do.
@MarkArandjus Unlike the Nazis the Romans did not create death camps or had a mission to cleans the world of the impure race. Rome could have wiped out all the people and civilizations that they conquered but they didn't. The Romans didn't round up the Celts and put them in reservations or Death Camps. The Romans tried to Romanize or assimilate them into the Empire.
@MarkArandjus I know that the Celts are a civilization in their own right but I just don't turn a blind eye to what they did to each other before the Romans came. Or what the Celts actually did to Roman prisoners, watch part 4 and just see what Boudica did. She is no better then the Romans. I admit the Romans are cruel but the barbarians were no different. Just bec. the Celts are fighting for freedom does not mean we can just turn a blind-eye to the wrong they did for that freedom.
@CrimsonGuard1992 No, the 'barbarians' weren't any better when it came to war, but at least they didn't go on a megalomaniac ego-trip conquering the world and wiping out cultures i ntheir wake is what I'm saying.
Besides, what would you suggest the Brits did to rive out the Romans, a hunger strike maybe?
@MarkArandjus As for the case with Boudica it was the result of a very corrupt governor who did not have the authority from anyone to take Boudica's lands. He acted on his own.
This top coment about the Romans looking more Evil than Nazi. Germany in my mind is bogus. Rome decided to politically conquer and share/lend, and slaughtered and fought those that didn't do as were told. Were as Germany did politicals for a few lands, Fueled their war effort of lies and hate for a Faith, and tortured and examined and tested their prisoners...yes Nazi Germany was based off Rome and Holy Rome but Nazi Germany was far worse on autrocities comitted
Also the celts invented capatilism and social welfare, and also steel. They never really invented anything, everything they had they stole from others. Their religion was pretty much a photo copy of greek religion. Thier Warfare tecnology originally was stolen from the greeks but eventually they adopted celtic wargear like tower shields with a metal boss punch grip over the old argive shield. Gladius came from celt-iberia. chain mail also celtic. Fatal flaw of the celts was political dis-unity
@OriginalBlace When i said they never really invented anything, everything they had they stole from others i was of course refering to the romans not the celts, the celts were very unique unlike rome who were chronic plagarists
Some examples of roman high civilisation. Dumping unwanted children on the town rubbish dump. Murdering and enslaving millions of people. butchering thousands of people daily for fun. Using lead pipes and lead cook ware giving everyone in a roman city lead poisoning. Some examples of celtic civilisation. Protecting disabled people and unwanted children with law legally obligating parents unwilling or unable to care for them carer. Inventing soap and washing daily on all levels of society.
Fuck rome. The celts were superior in everyway except political unity. If Gaul and Britain didn't from that flaw they would have wiped rome from the face of the earth and they would have done the world a huge favour in doing so. Even fighting them dis unified it took 8 years for gaul to fall. Also the romans had a military genius at their helm who even lost a battle, one of the only he ever lost in his military career. Ceasar brought an end to the celtic world not rome. He conquered rome as well
The Gauls brought it all on themselves - a very stupid thing to do - attacking and sacking Rome in 3rd Cen.BC - and intefering with Rome's 3rd Punic war by allying themselves with Hannibal. Rome had, since it's founding, been prophesied to last 1,000 years before being destroyed by "invaders from the North". The Gauls had been repulsed once. The Romans weren't going to let that happen a second time. That's how it Was. Don't slander the Past in order to ignore the Inhuman Horrors of the Present.
The frame of reference here, seems to be something like a U.N. resolution - and just as meaningless. The Romans pulled themselves up from a World Stage that was ALL ABOUT "war, conquest, killing of people and taking their land". Anyone who thinks they were some kind of nazis is an idiot. The Romans took their empire from the Greek and Carthaginian empires. The Macedonians took their empire from the Persians. The Romans were just the last and most efficient builders of Empire.
The Romans were ruthless conquerors and opressors, their sole aim being to extract as much as possible out of the occopied lands; metals, minerals, slaves, taxes etc. Any opposition or revolt against their presence and might ,where ever it occurred, was thouroughly quenched. This also served as a warning to all people within and around the Empire: obey, adapt, pay and do not dare messing with Rome. The whole conquering process was motivated by many an individual's lust for riches and power.
rhubarb. "Ruthless conquerors and opressors". Sounds like the English, doesn't it. However, the English got others to fight their wars - and they were much more ruthless.
Believe me, if they'd had gas chambers, they definitely would have. They murdered innumerable people in all manner of gruesome ways, and, while there is no way to measure death tolls so long ago, I'm certain their body count--hell, even Alexander's body count--would far exceed Hitler's.
You're right, though: Boudica was equally savage in her blind rage.
By the way, this comment has garnered far more replies than any other I've posted, lol. History rocks!
Erm, the Roamn's were very racist, as in if you weren't Roman you were considered a barbarian. This was one of their reasons for invading, to bring these people 'better lives.' Yes, it was again just a cover for greed.
The term 'barbarian' didn't necessarily have the same negative connotations that it does today. You might like to read up on its Greek origins.
By the Imperial period the Romans made a big effort to get provincials on their side. Enemies were treated harshly but those who allied with Rome generally received favourable treatment.
Emperor Claudius (who conquered Britain in the first place) went as far as to make Gallic chieftains Roman senators. By 212 every provincial was given citizenship.
I think you'll find that I was using the modern term of barbarian as I don't live in anicent Roman times and therefore have no need to pick my words carefully. The Roman's saw anyone but themselves as lesser beings, this will explain why the Roman people were disgusted and in uproar when the chieftains you speak of actual entered the city of Rome as 'senators.'

@theredraven By raping children and murdering whole families at random for even small acts of rebellion you mean? Please justify just how they helped develop humanity? Al lthey did was help further promote the creed of grabbing whatever you want at everyone else's expense.
I think you'll find that all aspects of history have this 'evil' to them. To the people doing the invading they were doing Gods or the Gods will. It was and still is all a cover for greed for land and wealth.
It doesn't make any worse than the other, they are all equally bad.
@XenaChi The issue with the Romans is by no means black-and-white. The Roman Empire did some good things, as Monty Python point out in the famous scene about "What did the Romans do for us?" But I think it's a mistake for historians to eulogize the Roman period. They gush a trifle too much about straight roads, hot baths, square buildings and central heating. Remeber that we paid a very VERY high price for these creature comforts. Ask youself: Was it really worth it?
@XenaChi the lion doesnt say "oh im terribly sorry! " before killing an antelope or a wolf never says "the gods made me do it " before killing a sheep. War is nature's way. Survival of the fittest.
@ArchEnemyNemesis1 ROFL are you comparing human decisions for war with the need to eat in animals? I'm sorry that doesn't wash. War is powered by greed, pure and simple. The wolf isn't going to kill the sheep to gain it's land and riches is it? No, it does it for food, to eat and live. Point out ONE war that was based only on the need to survive (eat)... the simple answer is there isn't one. War always has other greedy motives.

They thrived on violence and their culture was so unorignal that it had to steal it's ideals from other nations (namely Greece). And they had the cojones to call the Celt's barbarians? Proofs in the pudding.
@evolution031680 No, actually you're right. the reason we admire them is because we designed (in America) our society after them. We just accept it as the way. As I've grown I've disagreed. I'm libertarian, I side with villages, smaller government. Empires have luxuries, technology...money becomes important just like greed. Real nice guy,Nero-a.k.a.Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus a.k.a. Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus-matricide,(mother Agrippina) executed 1st wife Octavia, may or may not have been responsible for Great Fire of Rome 64 AD-blamed it on Christians and ordered the first persecution of them in which St.Peter and Paul were likely crucified-sent Vespasian to put down Jewish Revolt in which the Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed.Nice guy,DID NOT fiddle while Rome burned,at least!
