It's a shame that people can't upload talented videos anymore without people thinking the video's fake. You are incredibly talented, and have proven the rest of the youtube community wrong. Well done sir.
@atomterrible oic. I have that sheet music too. I just like what he does for the base way better live than in the studio recording, and Im havin trouble figuring it out :/
It doesn't sound very good in this tempo...it's just too fast..but i think you can play this song very good in a moderate tempo...130 beats per minute is the perfect tempo...check out my version...
dude.. I have been trying to play this song for like 20 years now... I have the sheet music that has single note bass-line (octaves in some places...) it is in my list of high maintenance songs.... takes me about a week to get it up to speed if I haven't been playing I have played it correctly (where I was happy with it...) maybe 3 times. love this song. just watching the billy joel 1978 live version right b-4 I saw ur vid. interesting that so many ppl are interested in this song. keep it up.
h-h-h-h-how did you get your fingers to move that fast?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! dude?!?!?!?! seriously!!!!!! this is like god playing or something....do you do like finger exercises or something? lol
how long did it take you to learn this! its a bit discouraging to me cause i just started and its extremely difficult
Well, if you overlook the fact that half of the notes are technically mess-ups, moving your fingers really fast and missing ain't so difficult. ^_^ Oh, and I skipped the octaves part because that's just plain impossible this fast. :P
Whenever you play a song to death you tend to get bored and try to take liberties like speeding the tempo into next week. It's impressive, but so is heavy metal playing....yet it sounds awful. Learn a new song dude.
good job dude. just saying and this is probably just me, but sometimes its better to play that song a little slower then 180 lol, it allows the people listening to enjoy the seperate parts more, but by all means, keep up your braggin rights with playing at 180. but keep in mind playing slower too
dude, way to prove that you are not a liar! I left a comment on your other video, (the one people keep yelling at you for) and I now take everything back that I said on the other video, and sorry for all of my typos in my other comment, also. Again, very nice!
Dude that was sick. and with some practice you could beat anyone on speed record on that song. The best I have ever seen was Jon Schmidt beating Billy Joels Record by 5 seconds. At 180 I think you could beat his record by more than that if you played it perfectly.
You shouldn't have had to prove anything to anyone. You did a fine job in this one, and where it was in F major. I'm not a pianist by any means [I'm a stringed kinda guy] but this is some major talent, dude.
i think its great u can play it this fast but it really takes away from the actual tune of it. post a slower version and it would be much better. I think people try to play it faster to match billy joels version, but thats impossible.
that's cool you took the time to learn it that fast, but obviously the song no longer poses a challenge to you in its natural state so why don't you go learn another man? you've got skills, I hate to see you waste them on making root beer rag ridiculously fast when in all honesty there is really no one out there who wants to hear it fast. I mean, it's root beer rag, not root beer bebop you know...but still, good job.
I thought the same thing. I don't know if you saw it, but I posted this because someone did question it. Look at "Root Beer Rag 180." by atomterrible also. There's a skeptic comment which is why I posted this.
not that its not awesome, but you skipped a lot of parts. thats really cool, but i think it would sound better if you played it at like 156. but thats still cool :)
I don't see why you think that's impressive. It's far harder to play it perfectly at a reasonable tempo than to do a crappy job at a fast tempo. So please post a version at 144 or 156!
hey, i play this song, too, and i know, that´s really hard.. but my opinion is, that it´s a bit too fast.. i play it in 143bpm and then it sounds a bit clearlier.. plz think about it, lol
Yes, I did skip the octaves part. I was just trying to prove a point. That is my least favorite part, so I usually don't play that part anyways (when just fiddling around).

Is that sheet music for the way he plays it live?
VanHalenMan5 9 months ago
@VanHalenMan5 No, it's the regular sheet music from Hal Leonard. I just listened to some recordings of him live and started emulating parts of it.

Hmm, I suppose not after all. I've never heard of any of them.
I was just 17 during this video. I'm almost 19 now.
Well, that's my goal—perfection at 180. :D
