Love my 550, The "autofocus" is just if your going to take pictures during the recording.... doh manual focus is the only way of to focus during recording...
@hollybee43 shooting like that ,i think , u don't need the sound , it can be muted with editing softwares..but yes it'll be a problem while shooting something like human interactions,interviews,concerts..etc !
The strange noise is the IS working and can be fixed or at least dampened with an external mic. In terms of autofocus noise, it's best not to use autofocus for video, especially if you intend to refocus during a take. If you can afford it then invest in a followfocus and do it manually.
@magnusofspades There is no auto focus, SLR are not a filming camera you can auto focus with the shutter bottom, but if you really want to focus following you can't on any canon or any SLR Camera. But there are the best use manual setting and manual focus and you will be loving it. The manual setting are really good, check out my video I made it with 60D
The loud noise is due to two factors. First, the lens doesn't have USM. Second, he is recording the audio for the internal mic. Using a USM lens with an external mic (the RODE, for example) would resolve the audio problem.
However, the auto focus is really bad. I'd recommend the manual focus, but it requires training and preparation before recording.
Use the distance indicator in the lens for precise focus and do not increase the shallow depth of field, if you need a "in focus footage".
Not having auto focus in the canon eos 550d is a disappointment, for a camera that claims to do things like 50 frames HD vids and lots of other effective movie modes, smooth auto focus is the thing which was really required stuff.. As manual focus at times can't be much effective.
@photomend Instead of being grateful to Canon for producing such a phenomenal camera at such an astoundingly low price, all you can do is bitch !! The video quality is STILL considered to be the best among all the DSLRs available today. And you talk about manual focus not being effective, well that's just your incompetence.
@swisstristan2000 Technically there is. It is just disabled. Go to menu>AF during movie and change to enabled. It is an okay feature for creative shots or if you intend to edit it out during video editing but the noise and bad picture it creates during shooting means its is better to get used to your lens's manual focus.
the crispy noise comes from image stabilizer, so it is always there - solution is external mic (never tried that).
There is no continuous focus on 550D during video, thus you can focus manually or by half pressing the shutter button.
if you choose large aperture there will be no problem to keep everything focused. however to achieve nice results, the best thing is to focus manually with some follow focus system that makes the focusing more comfortable and smooth
@MrSufiancool Well if you have the right Software it is very easy. You choose "Denoise" and select an silent area of your audio as "Noise Pattern". Silent means only the noise should be there, nobody is speaking or else. After that you just set how strong the denoising should be executed. If you make it to strong, it effects the good audio too much. Just try some different settings until you find a good one.
I love how crisp and good quality the 550d shoots on. I was worried as to how difficult it is to keep things in focus as they are not designed for video. Is it difficult to keep things in focus when focusing manually? Many thanks

To auto-focus during filming: Go to menu, and enable "AF during *camera-icon*. Then it works just like normal auto-focus.

Are you half pressing the shutter or manual focus?
konig000 1 year ago
Easy answer...
A camera, eaven if is able to make videos, is a camera. Built for photo not video.
You realy think that your lens can work right, fast and good in dark light?
If you want to make videos buy a videocamera..for this reason I bought the 450D
daddyguitar 1 year ago
Buy better lens and there will be no more noise ;)
manemax 1 year ago
why is this happening? I am thinking about getting a 550d but this worries me!
watlydirt 1 year ago
@watlydirt Why is what happening?
If you mean the noise, then it's because the lens needs to focus by turning a wheel.
This requires an engine, this engine makes a noise.
Solution: Lens with built in af motor which is more silent, or manual focus.
Manual focus is probably the most professional way of doing it.
