I have heard that it takes more skill to maintain certain techniques when drifting in an automatic, since you cannot pop the clutch. My bmw is auto, but it comes with a 1.2.3.D gear shift mode as well as economy and sport mode. If it ever gives me problems I am definitely swapping for manual though.

@douggoud they are around where i live dood, cant go one day out on the road without seeing at least 8+ cop cars every day at night there's even more, and since most places around where i live are 24 hours there's no abbandoned parking lots anywhere and believe me i looked, and how would i go about making a place? and the nearest track from me is about 90 miles away or so.
@douggoud also, bear in mind that my comment was directed more towards if they have the money to do the maintence on there cars, suspension, especially tires, and the drivetrain ware, they could easily afford to get a manual, there just choosing automatic becuase it really doesnt require any skill other than slamming on the break and flooring the gas and countersteering, no clutch or real weight transition to worry about when using the clutch to go through gears.

you can drift an automatic all the same as a manual, you spend most of the drift in one gear, if you have a ratchet shifter its even easier since it acts like a manual and doesnt shift unless you tell it to.
Okay in an automatic your just driving fast and turning into the corner to make it powerslide, its much harder and in a manual its easy, you just need to feather the clutch and keep your foot down. Trust me I was an award winning Drifter.
@amirmax11 just plant it at a corner in a auto works fine for me and my 2001 vx wagon, just have to make sure traction control is off and you put it in 3rd gear not drive. Having hard old tyre helps too
@doyouwanttofuk Yeah but if your into a tight corner and you went in to slow in an auto your couldn't correct it but in a manual just disengage the clutch put your foot down and let it loose. You can drift in an auto but you don't have as much control as in a manual and it is a shit load harder.

@ivanfu91 A mark II is a RWD and this is really drifting. his transmission is not a bone stock tranny. it has been rebuilt and has a toque converter that stalls to allow lock up like a manual transmission so he can play with the throttle and drift like a manual.
@xreptarbreex Mainly personal preference. Cars will run as long as theres the main components to it really. But between a boosted manual compared to an automatic. You sometimes experience "turbo lag" when driving a manual depending on how high the psi is set at whereas in an automatic, you don't lose that boosted pressure when the computer shifts the gears for you. I'd put more into a detailed explaination but there's a character limit...

i bet the clutch packs love this. more importantly id be worried about the tourqe converter turning into a hand grenade. good drifting tho! pretty impressive for being an automatic.

It is completly possible to drift an automatic without messing up the car, i have been practicing drifting in a 2001 toyota corrola for 5 years. and you can always but used tires if you new ones lose tred that how pros start out before they become pro..

ive drifted my moms 95 chevy express conversion van!! around 6000 pounds haha. it has a 350 in it and im surprised at the power of it! it has skinny tires so that helps it too. and im not talking mad drifting like this dude! i didnt drift too fast or as intense caus i didnt wanna flip it! haha. but nice vid dude!

@correll151 FWD can power slide, they can't drift. Drifting is only available to RWD cars, this is why at drift circuits people turn off the fwd in their wrx's and other awd cars.
