I'm an IB student from New Zealand and I know of the two prescribed works for the exam... Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter) by Mozart and this... My Music teacher has yet to officially tell me this and my exam is in November... Can someone elaborate on some things for me?

1) Why are there 2 pieces this year? (my best guess is that one is SL and the other is HL, and if so, which is which?)

2) Are both compulsory to answer questions on in the exam or do we pick between the two?

I didn't know we weren't able to listen to the prepared pieces during the test because our teacher said they did in past years. But I think I did alright without them. The 4 excerpts were pretty fun pieces. The Section C Question 8 was new to the Music Exam for HL.

@filipinoboy2011 Yeah that was REALLY awkward for me, but perhaps it's because they JUST changed the format of the HL test this year. I don't know if SLs were able to listen to the excerpts or not but apparently we weren't so yeah. They gave us excerpts last year..I don't know why they didn't this year 0__o

They were fun but I wish there was more variety...they were all 20th century pieces OTL. I feel like i didn't really get to show what I knew.

@invaderfromheaven my teacher said that's what a lot of people do on their exam and that will detract from getting more points because you're supposed to analyze the piece not give a personal opinion of how much you hate a composer :/

i only had time for 6 of the 7 questions we had to answer. so, since i analyzed the mozart, and because i dislike copland as a composer, my answer to question 3 consisted of me slamming him for being such an ADD composer. i drew them a comic to go with. not as good as my dinosaur on my HL english test though...

@chicken486 but if you've been taking it for 2 years then you need a 4 or you can't get your IB diploma. you also need to identify them in the score. You're going to be fine. Besides it really takes effort to get below a 4 :)

Out of the two we have to listen to, I think I like this one more, though. It's a lot more interesting in terms of color, expression, energy, and rhythm, whereas the mozart was, truthfully, kinda boring XD Also, if you do happen to agree with me (and even if you don't), you should check out Gerald Finzi's Op 40, the cello concerto. I wish we had been able to do that one instead of the Mozart...

@sminmorph if everybody fails it doesn't make it any better mostly because the people who actually do study and do decently will end up with higher grades because of the large amount of poor grades. That's what my teacher said for IB Music.

You should be able to basically hear a pfairly short piece of either song, from anywhere in it, and be able to basicallly... map out what is going on and any notes about the general outline, and how it relates to the whole piece (eg. Development stage reocurrance of first theme in Dominant) kinda stuff... so fun. i can't handle this piece of music. ..
