Back to Earth is classed as Series IX. Robert Lewellyn let slip on his Twitter page that Series X has been commissioned by tv channel DAVE, which screened Back To Earth after that did so well in the ratings. Its being written by Doug Naylor with the actors sorting out their contracts (since Craig Charles would need time off Coronation Street etc)
*Spoilers* Remember at the end of Back to Earth they went back to Red Dwarf with the whole thing being a hallucination from the Dimension Squid. The next series will continue from there.
There is not going to be a ninth series. Back to earth was a 3 part one off as part of an anniversary special, which DAVE paid a fair chunk of money to the Producers and gave them like a 2 month window to produce it, way too short.
In the last episode of Series VIII, Rimmer crosses over to the mirror universe to find the antidote to a corrosive chemical that is eating its way through the ship.
When he returns, Lister, Cat, Kryten and Kochanski are nowhere to be found, and Red Dwarf is moments away from falling apart.
The four main characters, Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten, are definitly confirmed. Holly however isn't, it could go either way, and it could be either gender, we aren't sure yet.
That's likely, they did it with Series 3 (cut Normal out) because he got in an argument with Ed Bye (I think). They needed to bring him back for the whole Series 8 reunion thing, but they gave him limited lines. :@
According to certain websites though, Danny John Jules is facing court in November for assault (apparently), but the filming is said to begin early 2009 (March or April at the latest) so we'll hopefully get the specials in the summer.
I'm going to see if I can get more research about this Danny John Jules/assault thing, since it could just be a rumour that's escalated. Even if it is true, they should get the filming done before anything happens.
Known about for 4 months, not completely known in terms of actual predictions for 4 months.
So no, maybe you need to keep up. They've changed it alot in the past 4 months, first it was only going to be 4 episodes, now 2, now it's 3. And what with Danny being jailed during that time, details on him returning were sketchy.
And insulting someone is often a last minute resort to try and act hard and clever, but it's usually the resort of the person having nothing else to say.
Danny was jailed for attacking 2 garbage men but then (this is the important part) due to further updates he was later released and given community service.
That's what I'm talking about by things at the time not being accurate later.
And stop acting up. The Red Dwarf reunions are for fans everywhere to join together appreciate the reunion, it's not for certain people to play up and act like jackasses to random people they don't even know for no real reason. It's not what this is about.
If they do make another series I hope its not all new tech I hope It keeps It's cheesy and unsophisticated feel because that was one of the main elements to the past series.

I think you need to be reminded about how obscure that old sitcom Red Dwarf is, and how different and more broad the appeal of Doctor Who is. When it comes to it, the latter is far more beneficial to the license fee payer than the former. People saying "bring back Red Dwarf" honestly sound ungrateful for the 8 series they've already had, and should perhaps look to fans of "Not the Nine O'Clock News" to learn how to accept comedies as being part of a particular period in time.
I think a big part of why the BBC won't go for either a Red Dwarf Movie or a Series IX is simply because they've sunk a big part their budget and creative energy into Doctor Who. Though i do love Doctor Who, i'd love see another Red Dwarf series even if it meant a break from DW, i wonder if russel t davis is a red dwarf fan :)
BTW, The post below sounded a bit too 'right on' and well spoken to me to seem genuine, almost like something a BBC spokesperson would say, or big doctor who fan :)
There is absolutely no need for more Red Dwarf, anymore than there is for The Young Ones to come back. I am personally very glad that the BBC have had the courage to say they don't want to pump more money into this series ten years after it proved itself no longer funny. Leave it in the past guys, and move on. There are eight previous series to enjoy, and a ninth series wouldn't be new for very long, so you'd then be asking for a tenth and so on. Not what the majority of license fee payers want.
honestly, all we Dwarfers are looking for is a clear-cut end to the series; the last episode was bollocks to high hell and left all of us wondering "...what the smeg?". if Red Dwarf came out with a straight to DVD film, a 9th season, or at the very least a final book in the RD series to tie up all of the loose ends and all then we wouldn't feel gypped out of the amazingly hilarious, poignant, and intelligent tale of the last human alive. that's all we really want. gimme a thumbs up if you agree!
Just use the alternative ending that's available on the Red Dwarf VIII DVD, or consider Dwarf over with the last series Rob Grant was involved with. It's not fair for cliffhangers to be used as an excuse to drag a programme out when the writers have forgotten what it's about and can't even manage anything funny anymore. We've seen the characters return to earth in Tikka to Ride, and we've seen they would rather just waste time in space than stay there. So that's it - no "clear-cut end".
Hey, look what the did with Blakes' 7 when there was a 5th season in materialization then again they where planning to pull out after 3rd seasonor when they pulled the plug off of the 3rd season of The Tripods. BBC is and are biass and is known to fuck over a Sci-Fi show when it's providing present and future success with oversee, merchandising etc. The best example is Who when it was to have a 27th season when the Beeb decided to kill the show for good. They may do the new series in very soon!
I really dont understand why the BBC rejected it. In its hayday, Red Dwarf outdid every other show on british television by millions in terms of rankings.
Don't forget Hyperdrive. I guess it makes sense for the Beeb to try out new things every once in a while, but to ignore a series like Red Dwarf altogether is just cruel. Especially considering it has such a loyal fan base. I mean, would it really dent the BBC's pockets THAT much if they commissioned some new episodes/radio shows/etc? (If only to spare us some of the Godawful stuff they're putting out in its place...) ;-)
BBC has a prejudice attitude toward Sci-Fi Fantasy shows! They will enjoy pocketing the profits and give us lame excuse why the shows are cancelled and have us to "enjoy" the shows past broadcast and their other lame shows! I don't think Who is destined to return to its 85/89 self at all. It'll make new mistakes and might be in the position of having to defend itself again in the future, but this will have nothing to do with the direction the series ended up taking in the mid to late 80s under JNT. Taken as any other current day TV programme, it's doing well for having lasted 4 years, guaranteed to have three specials in 2009 and a full series in 2010, and doesn't look like it's close to running out of steam yet.
