@AnAnonymusCat I think the correct version is actually "loathe". It would make sense anyway, as the previous line is "I would, if welcome I were", suggesting that the singer isn't welcome. I love this song too though, what a great song to have sung to you as a lullaby! @catndryer "loathe" means "hate".
The tune is for the Fause Foodrage, Andy Irvine got the reference wrong when looking for a tune, Sweeney's Menj sang it and even more influentially, Anne Briggs, and the rest is history.
researched it - Thompson set lyrics over a much older song as did Andy Irvine's Willy of Winsbury tune, which actually belonged to Fause Foodrage fable trad anon ?
so ideal ,

My old amp has died so listening via YouTube. First saw them at Essex Uni. in 1969 - Sandy was awesome (rip). Some of the nicest music ever.
ps the cover for 'what we did ..' was drawn on a blackboard that day at Essex - I should have nicked it for posterity.

It really is such a beautiful record and Sandy's vocal still sends happy shivers down my spine!

"for they loathe me, every one"......I don't understand this part of the lyric

Am not a native English speaker.
Can anyone say what 'swear a year' might mean here? Is it an expression?

It would be like saying "I promise to stay with you for one year." It's an older saying that not many English people would use anymore.

Jan Arends, a Dutch poet:
I never heard a real word that did not hurt.
(Ik heb nooit een echt woord gehoord of het deed pijn.)
This is sung so beautifully, it hurts.
Had Sandy Denny never made anything but this simple song, she'd? still be the voice of the heart she is to me.
