Hubbard turned against Psychiatry simply because he saw it as competition to Dianetics. He highlighted the failings (such as the indiscriminate lobotomies and electro-shock treatments of the 1950s) while ignoring its successes. Just as 100 years ago there was a "war" between Neurology and Psychiatry, so now there is a war between Scientology and Psychiatry. However, Scientology is purely a pseudo-science and a cult, hiding behind the trappings of "religion" in order to deflect criticism.

Well, there isn't a good book that tells you EVERYTHING about what Scientology is but try the What Is Scientology website. For a good first book try Self Analysis. I found Dianetics too hard to get through.

You don't even need a psychiatrist when you are dealing with schizophrenia, because it is an organic brain disorder. Do scientologists reject any form of medical treatment? Antipsychotics for schizophrenia are simply medications for a medical condition. Medical treatment for schizophrenics is a good thing, and, for the few patients who are violent, the medication can save the lives of those around them. Did Mrs. Perkins preferred to be stabbed 77 times than to get medical help for her son?
