I have a thoroughbred, that is the grand daughter of Mr. Prospector.......Her registered name is cliptomaniac, but now its maggie, cuz THT NAME IS CRAZY!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, she is blind in one eye, but i love her!!!
Thank you andtheyreoff, I don't remember if I have seen this race. 1974, the year Forego became FOREGO! Forego was coming five two turn races, the last two wins at the Widener and Gulfstream Park handicaps, both at a 1 1/4 miles. Runs this race, 7F in an easy 1:22 and 1/5, the first sprint in 6 months, carried top weight at 129, and beat a terrific field of sprinters!
Mr. Prospector was a brilliant sprinter and turned into a great sire of champions at any distance. Forego winning this tace, at a distance not suitable for his running style normally, speaks volumes for his greatness.
The 1970's was an uuber decade for racing. Secretariat, Forego and too many others to name. It was also a big decade for the bloodstock business. Possibly the decline of the sport is related to the haphazard breeding that was promulgated by the lure of a quick buck.. The old gentry considered the breeding of good horses an art not a way to make a quick buck. That's why we don't see and abundance of good foal crops today.
Santorin II, who had been a champion in Peru, won the Carlos Pellegrini in Argentina, the top race in South America. In 1974, he ran fourth in the Hialeah Turf Cup (G2) but was moved up to 3rd on a DQ. However Forego did not run in the Turf Cup; I don't think he ever ran in a turf stakes. Did Santorin run in the Widener on dirt, which Forego did win, and not place?
That might just be a solution, Wally. The breeders cup sure has changed things, perhaps not for the better in some ways.
You hear talk about Big Brown leaving a racing legacy. How? By running six or seven times and retiring to the breeding shed? Granted, hes not a gelding so he cant be expected to race 'till hes seven, but c'mon. Run the blasted horse, willya? He IS a thoroughbred, isn't he? Isnt that what he was bred for? The only 'legacy' they're creating for BB now is "what might have been".
A Peruvian horse called Santorin ran in one Forego's race in 1974 and finished 3rd, does anybody know what race is it? Is there a video of that race? Please reply if you know tha answer, I'll be more than glad to know!
Running against the best in the land, and winning-from 7 furlongs to 2 miles. Just astounding. I still cant believe that the JCGC is now run at 1 1/4. C'mon, NYRA(or whoever's responsible)-at least run it at 1 1/2 again.
The problem with running the JCGC at 1 1/2 Miles now is the fact that everything centers around the Breeders' Cup, which was not the case when Forego ran. What is needed is the BC Classic to become 1 5/8 Miles, and if so, the JCGC would immediately return to 1 1/2 Miles if so.
After Easy Goer lost the 89' Breeders Cup Classic after prepping in the 1 1/2 Jockey Club Gold Cup, many thought the extra quarter of a mile of the JCGC dulled Easy Goer's speed and brilliance for the 1 1/4 BC Classic. The next year, NYRA moved the distance to 1 1/4 (10 furlongs). So, the shortening of the JCGC's distance was not an immediate response to the Breeders Cup, which started in 1984. Six JCGC's were run at 1 1/2 in the BC era. Instead, it was Easy Goer's loss that sealed the change.
Dangerous from age 3 to age 7, from 7 furlongs to 2 miles, from spring in Florida to fall in New York: he's the kind of champion we don't get to see much any more!
in my book forego was the best. i watched all of his races as a child, but i was old enough to know somthing special when i saw it. i have not seen any handicap horse that would compare.

this horses owner wouldn't race him against a certain horse in "73" cause he got beaten so badly in a race I believe is called the Derby

I looked at Forego's record and found no such horse. Are you sure about the details?
