@evilevilrick I have to agree a tea ball makes more sense. Or you can even just grind your coffee super fine, beyond espresso, and forget straining all together and drink it "turkish" with some grounds in the bottom . After all when you are camping a certain amount of roughing it is to be expected.
I just tried this with a funnel and #1 coffee filters, I used a mug from Trexler summer camp (the one piece plastic ones). I poured the water in slow and had a great cup of coffee. It was better than a cup from my coffee maker.
This method seems VERY makeshift--admirably DIY, however--but it seems that there's too much opportunity for the water to cool. I have thought this over--and is there a powdered instant coffee that's worth a damn? I know it's usually not even comparable to fresh-brewed REAL coffee. That's just a thought. I like this method, and would use it if I had to scrounge around in the car to make coffee from stuff laying on the floor.
I dont know of any instant coffee that comes close to fresh brewed. However, if you spoon instant coffee into a cup of instant hot chocolate, it makes a decent Mocha!
A much more efficient and more tasty way is to go to REI, purchase the MSR mugmate for $20, fill with coarse ground coffee, take the beer can pot off the heat, throw the mug mate with the lid on into the boiling water and let it steep. The mesh screen keeps the coffee's oils in the coffee and not in the paper filter making it taste a lot better. Worth the $20 and lasts forever!
Yeah, that would be missing the point of DIY. It was just a thought. Negligible amount of weight and makes great coffee. Anyway, still a great video tutorial. Way to go Mr. Bill!
fuuny great idea. i did mine last week LOL. i put holes in the ziploc container and used that to put on top of my cup with the filter . thanks wish i waw this sooner
Why in the hell would Scoutmasters get a bunch of kids interested in drinking coffee? There are enough dangerous drugs out there for them to experiment with, no need to start them on caffeine.
GREAT BUT.... How come North Americans think that a coffee filter is necessary to make coffee? (I'm Canadian and I assumed it was necessary too, until I travelled with a Mexican friend.) If U get the right fine grind of coffee, U just stir it directly into the boiling water, wait a few minutes for the grinds to sink and then pour (but not to the last drop, obviously.) This is how coffee and tea were made for centuries. Cheers.
I like the very small, very lightweight, and very cheap cup.

I just use a tea ball, put ground coffee in it, put it in my canteen cup full of water on the fire, when its dark enough, it's done.

@evilevilrick Good idea, and I have tried that, but it just never gets strong enough for me.

angrykid1219 1 year ago
@angrykid1219 I didn't know that "truckers brew" was a brand? I have only heard "truckers brew" used in reference to very strong, dark brewed coffee.

Thanks for your comment.

Thanks Bill, Looks like I'll be trying this soon. I'm tired of picking coffee grounds out of my teeth from Cowboy coffee.

You're welcome! Glad to help!
Though, I must say, I have had very good luck with the process I use for my cowboy coffee. I should make a video of that sometime.

katygfmu 3 years ago
First and foremost, please dont swear.
Second, the coffee is for the adult leaders, NOT for the kids. We do keep to the Scouting guidelines and always have multiple adults on our outings.
Third, scientific testing has shown coffee to have significant health benefits when consumed in moderation.

Filter paper absorbs much of the oily acidic properties of coffee, leaving a cleaner and fresher coffee taste with little or no bitterness.

This is awesome, I'll be trying this. I use a Keg pot, alcohol stove and ziploc cup as it is. So i'll just need to add the little lid. Sweet. Thanks.
