  • in this reality, kirk never listened to the beastie boys

  • 3 then 6 then 3 then 6, repeat for endless fun

  • IT'S SSAAABOTAAAAJHHHH *Beastie Boys scream*

  • SUFFERING SUKATASH!

  • It's a running joke about Kirk's quirk with the word "sabotage". In STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, Lieutenant Valeris suggests indirectly that Uhura ignore an order radioed from Starfleet. She refers to the origin of the word, where workers whose livelihood was threatened by machines threw their wooden shoes, or "sabots", into the gears of the machine, thus causing sabotage. SHE pronounced it correctly. Uhuru decided that communications were inoperative.

  • It's explainable because Shatner grew up in Montreal, Quebec. In French, the second a in "sabotage" is pronounced the same as the first! If he heard the word only in French, or more often in French than in English, it might have influenced him.

  • At a Phoenix, AZ Trek convention, George Takei said the voice actors for the animated series read the scripts cold, and alone on a sound stage, without the other actors to react to. It made it difficult to know how to inflect the dialogue correctly.

  • oh my god i just realized i had watched every star trek episode except for TAS

  • Pork chops, and apple shaaawsh.

  • Sufferin' sabatash

  • It sounds more sophisticated when Shatner pronounces...

  • SSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAABBBBBBBBOOOOOTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAGGGGGGEEEEEE!!!

  • SABATADGE

  • yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

  • It's SSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

  • Sabotage.. sounds like the next mama luigi

  • SUFFERIN SABBOTAJ!

  • As B. Bunny might say.....Suffering Succo-taj!

  • He's got a Vulcan thorn in his side...

  • Savatage?

  • Sabotage?

How When Where Here No way XD!

  • lol i cringe EVERY time kirk says sabotage. and he says it surprisingly often.

  • @missdexterity

Lol, he even says "sabataage" in the video games, it's great. Kirk is pure gold, I wouldn't change a thing about him.

  • @missdexterity

Maybe it's just the way people say it in the 23rd century.

  • sir! they are trying to board our wessel

  • Captain Kirk can say sabotage any way he damn well pleases

  • Im gonna make saboo-taj the new way I say sabotage :D

  • sabo-tasch? lol

  • search and destroy

  • Lol reminds me of Dr. solus from mass effect

  • I picked up some indication they're planning to plant a bomb on Jock's helicopter.

    A BOMB! How, when?

  • The fuck?! Thats Shatner for ya, lol.

  • Discrepencies like this were common during ST:TAS. The cast usually was not together for recording their lines. Even better is the episode "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth". Everyone else correctly pronounces the name of the antagonist as "Kukulkhan" while Shatner keeps saying "Kuklakhan."

  • Spock:Sabotage

    Kirk:Sabotash XD

  • oh my god its a mirage

    im tellin yall its sabotaj

  • sabataaaage

  • Can't stand it!.......

  • I know you planned it!...

  • I've seen and heard the director trying to get Shatner to say it the "correct" way, and it's hilarious, but your write up in the side bar made me laugh even more than that... "the word being mangled time and time again" LOL... AND I have to say I *LOVE* THE BEASTIE BOYS and there has been a connection between them and star trek for a long time. I'm so glad that awesome scene in the new film sent new FANS looking for that song. CLASSIC.

  • Go back to Commiesylvania, you Commie!

  • @evilkumquat Where is that and I will gladly go

  • That's how he says it. Everyone should get over it.

  • Can we get under it?

  • LOL! Everyone always tell us to "get over it." By God, I'm getting UNDER it from now on LOL...

  • Thank you! As am I...

  • I like his version. Sabotaaj.

My friends love it when I pronounce it that way. It's now considered a 'pronunciation enhancer' within our group. :)

  • canadian dialect

  • Didn't the Beastie Boys sing the song sabotage because of the way William Shatner pronounced sabotage?

  • So that's why JJ Abrams used the Beastie Boys to introduce us to a young Kirk.

  • I think so as both the band & the music video rock.

  • perfect choice. i got so excited in the theater right away.. "omg that's SABOTAGE!" one of the best scenes ever,

  • Sahb-oh-tahzsh... how, where?!

  • yea its french. after all frenchies are the best when it comes to resistance.

  • but not successfully

  • In a teaser Riker once said "It's time to end this charade" but pronounced it "cha-Rod". It was changed in the ep but the teaser was funny. It was the ep where he was in a play and then in a mental institution.

  • Yes! I was actually really disappointed when he said it normally in the episode.

  • As was I.

  • spock:sabotage

    kirk:sabotahge

  • I know its from him being french canadian, but combined with the look on his animated characters face this was really funny for me.

  • Sabotage Sabotage Sabbotage Sabotage Bastohge Sabitafe Saboutage Succotash Saboyahe

  • they shoulda put this scene in the opening montage of shatner's roast.

  • it'S just the french way to pronounce it... and... actually... sabotage is a french word, so Shatner is right

  • What's wierd is that he pronounces it that way just seconds after Spock pronounces it in a radically different way.

My understanding of the matter is that the entire cast of this show actually recorded all their dialogue separately--in some episodes, they pronounce aliens' names in all sorts of different ways, too.

  • haha ;d

  • sabo-taaaaj lol

  • It's not unique, it's just Canadian.

  • I Can't Stand It I Know You Planned It

But I'm Gonna Set It Straight, This Watergate

I Can't Stand Rocking When I'm In Here

Because Your Crystal Bal Ain't So Crystal Clear

So While You Sit Backand Wonder Why

I Got This Fucking Thorn In My Side

    Oh My, It's A Mirage

    I'm Tellin' Y'all It's a Sabotage

  • Listen all y'all it's a sabotage,

    Listen all y'all it's a sabotage,

    Listen all y'all it's a SAAAAABOTAGE!

  • They should have dragged out that scene...

    Sabo-taj?

    No Captain Sabotage

    Sabotaj

    No Captain, it's Sabotage

    That's what I said Spock... Sabo-taj

    etc

  • Wrongway Feldman on Gilligan's Island played by Hans Conried said sabotaaage, too!

  • The Shat rocks.

  • Shatner was recording his lines independently (on the road IIRC) so I don't think Nimoy was actually annoyed at him.

That said, I *so* want to hear a version of the BB song in which they pronounce it a la Shatner.

  • why is that funny.... lol

  • This is a good Video, but yall should check out this video.... the music is off the chain. Search "Vthov Obama Inauguration Song" He's a nobody now, but I guarantee he's going places. Don't take my word for it, see for yourself.

  • HOT FOR WORDS DECIDED TO INVESTIGATE.

  • SABOTADGE

  • It's a French word, he likes to say it in a more "Frenchie" way. So fucking what? He's Canadian!

  • fuck you freaks

  • I say sabotAAge - not sabotage.

    PROOF!

  • For the animated series, the actors were not together. Each one recorded just their own lines at local recording studios wherever they were, and sent in their tapes.

  • What is Shatner's deal with that word?!

I wonder why he is so f*cking pissy about saying it that way?!

    At least he is consistant.

  • Actually the late Jimmy Doohan (Scotty) says they did several shows all together in the same recording room when schedules permitted, I wonder though which ones, anyone know?

  • It may seem like Nimoy was trying to stress the proper pronunciation to Shatner but due to both of them doing other gigs Nimoy, Shatner and most of the others recorded the voices for the animated show at separate times and sometimes even locations (except for the first couple of shows).

  • Since french is my first langage, I can confirm that the way Shatner pronounces it is indeed closer to the original french word. That being said, what can be considered "right" is relative; most people who speak english pronounce it the way Nimoy does, so they're likely to consider it as the right pronounciation. In any case, it doesn't make a big difference so I don't believe we can say anyone's at fault here.

  • Except that's all part of the fun of being 'mericun- finding fault with others.

Where would internet forums be without it?

  • ROFL !

  • I don't agree. That word is now part of the English language now and the pronunciation has nothing to do with it's origin.

So I suppose you can interchange the different spellings of the words as well and it's ok. All words are filtered through the language- SPELLING and PRONUCIATION- and there comes out of it ONE ACCEPTED spelling and pronounciation.

That's just the way it works. If you speak or write ENGLISH, there is an accepted spelling and pronunciation.

    Accents notwithstanding.

  • dude, you're full of crap. there's lots of words in the english language that people pronounce differently from person to person, not just accent to accent. ever heard the word "data?" how about "tomatoe?" i guarantee if you take a group of people who were all born and raised in the same city, some of them will pronounce certain words differently. They aren't wrong, its just how people are.

  • @Evy2526 fuck offf ya square cunt

  • @Evy2526 Maybe that's due to the fact that, since he's Canadian, the Shatner can speak both English and French fluidly?

Now, in case you're Canadian, do all of you people speak two languages or is that a rarity?

  • @MasterMacLeod Many Canadians do not speak French and English, especially the further west you go.

  • @MasterMacLeod It's aboot 40% of french Canadian who speek english and 10% of english who speek french. 80% of Canadian are fluant in english. 17% of all canadian speek both french and english. But for english people in the region of montreal it is verry common to speek both language(Althought I have never heard Mr Shatner speak french, I believe he does). If you are interested in knowing more aboot languages in canada, Wikipedia quebec english and statistic Canada should do.

  • @Evy2526 The original french word may be closer to the way he says it, however, in the english language the correct way to say it is the way spock does. We took the french word and made it our own. That is why it is correct (If you want to get in detail)

However it's still fuckin hilarious XD

  • @Evy2526 Shatner is from Montréal so it's normal that he prononce correctly french words...

  • they weren't even in the same room when they recorded these shows. the timing and pronunciation are always off.

  • Any unaccented "a" in french makes an "ah" sound, as in how Nimoy pronounces it.

  • Shatner also says "gnat-zee" (gnat like the bug) instead of the correct "nazi" (naht-zee). ive also never heard the french pronounce the word "sabotage" like shatner. nimoy's is the correct way to say it.

  • Not on the side of the pond where the word was invented (from Dutch "sabot" IIRC). Listened again - Nimoy's is waaay wrong. He says the "a" in sabotage as "aaa" very long - too long.

  • "Nazi" is a German word, it is not pronounced with long "a" as in "ah". Should be short a as in "bat".

  • you're wrong.

  • I agree. It's N-ah-zi.

  • Winston Churchill infamously pronounced Nazi as "Naw-zee." Not only that -- he was a rotten painter! Hitler -- now, THERE was a painter. He could paint an entire apartment in one afternoon. Two coats!

  • Shatner's seems more correct - perhaps as it is a French word and he is Canadian.

  • He's saying "sabotage", not "about", so the Canadian excuse doesn't hold water here.

  • Nevertheless, his pronunciation is closer to the actual French word than Nimoy's. Would be interesting to hear them say "saboteur" and see if he's still closest.

  • What the fuck are you talking aboot?

  • @evilkumquat he's also from Montreal, where they speak French

  • @evilkumquat He is from Montreal, so he'll prononce french words in french, it's not canadian excuse, it's french-canadian excuse

  • @evilkumquat canadian accents play out a lot more than just in aboot.

How about roof? we say it completely different than the american "ruff"

  • Ha! not all us canadians speak french. i nearly failed it two times in school.
