It's a running joke about Kirk's quirk with the word "sabotage". In STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, Lieutenant Valeris suggests indirectly that Uhura ignore an order radioed from Starfleet. She refers to the origin of the word, where workers whose livelihood was threatened by machines threw their wooden shoes, or "sabots", into the gears of the machine, thus causing sabotage. SHE pronounced it correctly. Uhuru decided that communications were inoperative.
It's explainable because Shatner grew up in Montreal, Quebec. In French, the second a in "sabotage" is pronounced the same as the first! If he heard the word only in French, or more often in French than in English, it might have influenced him.
At a Phoenix, AZ Trek convention, George Takei said the voice actors for the animated series read the scripts cold, and alone on a sound stage, without the other actors to react to. It made it difficult to know how to inflect the dialogue correctly.
Discrepencies like this were common during ST:TAS. The cast usually was not together for recording their lines. Even better is the episode "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth". Everyone else correctly pronounces the name of the antagonist as "Kukulkhan" while Shatner keeps saying "Kuklakhan."
I've seen and heard the director trying to get Shatner to say it the "correct" way, and it's hilarious, but your write up in the side bar made me laugh even more than that... "the word being mangled time and time again" LOL... AND I have to say I *LOVE* THE BEASTIE BOYS and there has been a connection between them and star trek for a long time. I'm so glad that awesome scene in the new film sent new FANS looking for that song. CLASSIC.
In a teaser Riker once said "It's time to end this charade" but pronounced it "cha-Rod". It was changed in the ep but the teaser was funny. It was the ep where he was in a play and then in a mental institution.
What's wierd is that he pronounces it that way just seconds after Spock pronounces it in a radically different way.
My understanding of the matter is that the entire cast of this show actually recorded all their dialogue separately--in some episodes, they pronounce aliens' names in all sorts of different ways, too.
This is a good Video, but yall should check out this video.... the music is off the chain. Search "Vthov Obama Inauguration Song" He's a nobody now, but I guarantee he's going places. Don't take my word for it, see for yourself.
For the animated series, the actors were not together. Each one recorded just their own lines at local recording studios wherever they were, and sent in their tapes.
Actually the late Jimmy Doohan (Scotty) says they did several shows all together in the same recording room when schedules permitted, I wonder though which ones, anyone know?
It may seem like Nimoy was trying to stress the proper pronunciation to Shatner but due to both of them doing other gigs Nimoy, Shatner and most of the others recorded the voices for the animated show at separate times and sometimes even locations (except for the first couple of shows).
Since french is my first langage, I can confirm that the way Shatner pronounces it is indeed closer to the original french word. That being said, what can be considered "right" is relative; most people who speak english pronounce it the way Nimoy does, so they're likely to consider it as the right pronounciation. In any case, it doesn't make a big difference so I don't believe we can say anyone's at fault here.
I don't agree. That word is now part of the English language now and the pronunciation has nothing to do with it's origin.
So I suppose you can interchange the different spellings of the words as well and it's ok. All words are filtered through the language- SPELLING and PRONUCIATION- and there comes out of it ONE ACCEPTED spelling and pronounciation.
That's just the way it works. If you speak or write ENGLISH, there is an accepted spelling and pronunciation.
dude, you're full of crap. there's lots of words in the english language that people pronounce differently from person to person, not just accent to accent. ever heard the word "data?" how about "tomatoe?" i guarantee if you take a group of people who were all born and raised in the same city, some of them will pronounce certain words differently. They aren't wrong, its just how people are.
@MasterMacLeod It's aboot 40% of french Canadian who speek english and 10% of english who speek french. 80% of Canadian are fluant in english. 17% of all canadian speek both french and english. But for english people in the region of montreal it is verry common to speek both language(Althought I have never heard Mr Shatner speak french, I believe he does). If you are interested in knowing more aboot languages in canada, Wikipedia quebec english and statistic Canada should do.
@Evy2526 The original french word may be closer to the way he says it, however, in the english language the correct way to say it is the way spock does. We took the french word and made it our own. That is why it is correct (If you want to get in detail)
Shatner also says "gnat-zee" (gnat like the bug) instead of the correct "nazi" (naht-zee). ive also never heard the french pronounce the word "sabotage" like shatner. nimoy's is the correct way to say it.
Not on the side of the pond where the word was invented (from Dutch "sabot" IIRC). Listened again - Nimoy's is waaay wrong. He says the "a" in sabotage as "aaa" very long - too long.
Winston Churchill infamously pronounced Nazi as "Naw-zee." Not only that -- he was a rotten painter! Hitler -- now, THERE was a painter. He could paint an entire apartment in one afternoon. Two coats!
Nevertheless, his pronunciation is closer to the actual French word than Nimoy's. Would be interesting to hear them say "saboteur" and see if he's still closest.
