Robotic engineers are different from medical scientists. Even if you disagree with that, this is still a study in human motion and computer programming. With this knowledge of balance and visual perception, it can be used in larger scales in the future for something like assisted living, space exploration, etc.
this lil robot is cooler than asimo, titan, rock-it, quasi, aibo all of them, it could talk, walk, run, dance, sing, skate, just all kinds of stuff, it definitely would have been one of the most successful steps towards artificial intelligence and robotics, to bad sony discontinued the project
Un-be-lievable. The people at Sony are idiots to stop this project. The applications of a robot with movement that fluid are.....unimaginable. With robots like that, um, why are we still sending PEOPLE up in the space shuttle again?
that is so true. I don't see why people at sony don't recreate a robot capable of intelligence that matches that of qrio, even if they were discontinued for problems that NO LONGER EXIST! I would kill for a qrio!
Yeah but i think having the robot be small is much more advantageous. Its not like sony never thought of making a big one. For instance, think about how much more stealthy a small robot is than a 4 foot tall one. and they have the same battery life! (<= 1hr on full charge)
well also i just realized...pretty sure they were about to start trying to sell it. and i think a pint sized little dancing robot man is a lot easier to sell than, well, an actual sized robot man. that'd scare the hell out of a housekeeper i know that much
i think the qrio is the single biggest breakthrough of robotkind- its been proven to be an amazing advantage. and also theyre damn cool. they can walk/run/skate/dance..everything
I dont think a skating robot is a breakthrough. We have alot more in this world to worry about. Yet people are wasting money researching seedless watermellon when 2 year old kids are suffering with cancer. Just my opinion.
You have noble ideas but you need more imagination. Imagine how many old people will benefit from having personal robot assistants, which research like this works towards.
It's not the ederly consumers in japan that sony would target. They would make them all different neon colors and every kid on the block will have their own. We will just get lazier. Eventually the robots will be smart enough to spike your soda with rat poison. Who knows what will happen from there?
Yeah, to turn a profit now. But it's been stated by sony and honda that the end result of robotic engineering is to create care-bots that help the elderly
No one knows why they abandoned the Qrio research do they? I think its was just the cost of the project, funding it was probably costing sony a fortune
Y'know...I've kinda not liked Sony for a while--mostly because of the whole Playstation deal, and I'm a Nintendo fan--but I must praise Sony for the work they're doing with these robots! Quite amazing, I must say. I say they put the PS work on hold for a little while, and start putting more time into these robots!
I agree...I have taken a particular dislike to the playstation stuff (even if the DDR is fun) and I think these little guys are by far the most interesting!
yeah you know why? one of these fuckers went berzerk and tried to kill the president of Sony. what they haven't told the public is 5 of them escaped and are on the loose in osaka.
they should put him on a sk8board stick him on a vert ramp that would be sick or make him grind or tha robo 900 he could be tha 1st ever robot in tha x games
The music is so inspiring. How creepy is the robot though? Its like the kind of video they show in a bleak, "not too distant future" movie about robots gone crazy, showing the humble, happy, promising outlook of robot design in the beginning.
It's clear they use motion sensors to capture a humans movement then place that on a microchip and a person then sends a command to the robot to repeat those motions. It's the same method of digitizing done with automotive robots but using motion capture instead of recording movements in servos.
Wtf?! Are you stupid?! This is an A.I. robot that has been in production for a while. I'm sure there isnt a Qiro headquarters, full of people mindlessly running around, wirelessly feeding the info to the Qiros in peoples homes. Lolz.
I JUST found out last week that's how much they were going for. When a friend told me, my jaw hit the floor. I'd pay $3,000 MAYBE $5k but $50k? That's a car and a half! I felt so foolish when I posted here that I'd dish $1,200. Obviously, I had no idea how sophisticated QRIO is. As much as I'd love one, there's no way I'd pay $50k.
