It might be fine being able to carry heaps of things on the roof, but what for the center of gravity? High COG + Vague Steering + The kind of person who pays 3,400 pounds for this car = recipe for disaster on the motorway.
Have to say that they did a good job of starting to make an expedition Disco, but it's a shame they sold it half finished.
Bog standard suspension and normal road tyres won't get you too far off road - the snorkel was a waste of money in that sense because once you get into water deep enough for the snorkel, the rest of the car will get you stuck.
Still it's a reasonable base for someone to finish the job - though £3,000 was a lot for a 300TDi Disco with a few bolt-ons...
What a sack of shit. I bought a disco to modify on a budget and made it a damn sight better than their one and it didn't cost me as much all in....like them so much I have another now with big tyres on, winch, snorkel, alisport hybrid turbo and intercooler etc
Side steps look horrible, fine unless you offroad it, seems to me that for £1700 outlay including the powersteering box it was a good deal, but then to bolt on £1000 worth of tacky bits was a mistake.
As a Land Rover owner and enthusiast, I have to say this is an absolutely horrible episode. You'd have to be a total imbecile to think you're driving a rugged expedition-worthy SUV with the cheapo mods Ed has done.
Perhaps this will appeal to some clueless 16-year-old. And just the fact that he left the running boards on, gives it all away; any true off-roading would rip those off in a flash.
they just drove it through a couple of puddles then played the film over again, thats serious off roading lol and all that work for a share of 200 quid, poor ed!!
What did they actually do to those holes drilled in the back door and wing? left some grease behind? a lick of paint?any protection at all? they're waiting for the rust to come..
Thanks for the share! I love the people ranting about it! It's a programme for the average comsumer, of course it's a normal Disco with some stuff added! Good episode though!
For such an expensive snorkle kit you would think they would just include the lower air cleaner box premade as a direct replacement instead of having the customer do all of that modification to the stock unit.
Well, the snorkle was a bad idea on this anyway. If the water ever got as high as the throttle body on the engine it would short out all of the computers/electronics under the hood and dash since they are not water proof.
@texan176 I agree, a new plastic bottom half of the airbix would have been in order for that kit. It's remedial that they make you do all that bullshit to the original system.
@MrSpeedfightRichy drove my disco through water that went over the windscreen and the only problem afterwards was the heater had sucked in water and was blowing out steam, and a squeaky pulley somewhere. oh and the ABS doesn't work anymore but i was going to take it out anyway
They have basically turned a utility vehicle into a toy - and I guess that was their intent all along. For a proper expedition vehicle, you would need a few bits and bobs more. But this is first and föremost TV so we need to see it as it si: 99 % entertainment, 0.5 % enlightenment and 0.5 % undetermined junk :D
@mdelatorre85 An expedition vehicle wouldn't want big mud terrain tyres, as they'd be far too detrimental to on-road performance and fuel economy. They'd be better off putting on some standard size BF Goodrich All Terrain tires.
My LR Discovery is a V8 petrol- although I dont have the protectors underneath or the spots, I do have the roof rack. My vehicle has been to some pretty far flung places, been flooded, on its side two times; it's never let me down.
Yes, a top end 'expedition' vehicle goes for 10 grand.......
So, why don't we just flog add some trinkets to an underpowered diesel with 150000 miles on the clock, and flog it for 3 grand..........
Why don't they offer a reasonable resale value at the beginning, so we can appreciate the real intent? Rather than suggesting the end product will get them quids in, when clearly it won't :-S
It would have done exacly the same job if they left it alone. If anything, they made it worse by adding more weight. Jack it up and fat tyres, alright keep the snorcal, and thats all you need.
if they really want to make this Land Rover disco off-roading worthy, edd should have replaced all the open diffs with either torsen LSDs or lockers. a lift would definitely raise it off-roading capability. lastly, some off-road tyres. undercarriage protection for engine, gearbox and diffs is good. however, the lights are not essential. snorkel is alright.
they've should have done so much more to this car than just bolt on a few shiny bits of chrome... they should have added a winch, lifted the suspension, and replaced the old tyres with some good off-roaders... this car wasn't even close to being an "expedition" vehicle
@timfreerider could not agree more all they have done is basically made it worse for offroading by adding more weight, and what proper offroader would you have 7 people on board with all there luggage the car would be lower than a Ferrari lol
No roll over protection?
No lift?
No proper tyres?
All they did was bolt some bits on.

They could have resold the disco unmodified for 2,000 and pocketed more cash without ANY work whatsoever!!!! Reality tv is just bullshit anyway.

it isnt a serious offroader yet cus they didnt put bigger offroading tires on it. and also it needs a little lift.

Also they should have uprated the suspension - an expedition vehicle is going to need some higher rated springs to take the extra weight.

Did they check to see if the diff lock lever is siezed up? A common problem with the LR if the diff lock isn't used, the levers sieze up!
