  • Blaze was Murdered at Age 39..He was not old..He had his share of troubles..And that Shows in his songs..But He was a gift From God..If I could only fly??..Cold Cold World?? Clay Pigeons?? Oh Darlin??..Come on..He was a Songsmith..I Wish I could Write any thing even close to His songs...And his voice was Perfect for his Songs...I Hope to Meet Him on the other side..

  • what is all this crap a beatifully written song sung for real

  • Why oh why this man was shot and killed for what? THERE was SO MUCH MORE this world needed of him.. This man came through the worst and spread the best...Maybe your life has been that good? that really good!? well God bless they say.. but what i hear, what i see, and feel in my mind and heart you can't not.. Before anyone makes any so so flat-line judgment here. Please go see who it is you are judging, could very well be yourself. Take a deep look into this American hero to so many.

  • Blaze Foley..Legend. Beautiful song. The bottle laid him low long before he was shot. His songs will live on forever.

  • so much emotion in his voice true singer it's like you can feel what he's been through.I herd he got shot dead wasted talent.I would of liked to of met him.HOPE HE FLIES NOW?

  • Never heard of this guy before, but just this taste tells me he writes about the realness of life not the pop and glitz. I'd rather listen to the worst original than all the folks singing cover tunes although some do them very well when they make them their own, but few are able to. I quite doing cover tunes when I was told by a young listener;"you do you very well." I heeded those words and began writing my own tunes inspired by all the influences through the years. Stop by my channel.

  • I guess you never have been a mopey depressed drunk or you could relate.

Its also about how much he says with so few words.

Blazes songs speak volumes a tragic loss to singer songwriter lovers everywhere.

  • well mr.666(great set of numbers, real devil like), the really sad thing is is that blaze was so dumb he got all shot up and is dead as a doornail and has been for many years, while I've been trapesing around the world playing music that is as good as his lame tunes anyday...cheers!

  • Actually I have done the homework, as I could show you posters advertizing my old bands gigs, where blaze is opening for us.....and i appreciate all yall being pretty nice after what i said, but i guess i just dont understand mopey old drunk guy songs....i like donald fagan type lyrics more...kinda sick and aggressive at the same time....its all good i guess...but i did see a great tee shirt the other day...."It's not that I'm old, your music really does suck"

  • @bluelouise13 I travel with Gurf Morlix and he says the same thing. "Your music really does suck." But I've discovered that his taste isn't the be and end all, his taste does suck on a number of artists, so you can't be the absolute judge of anything. You know what you like and we know what we like so that's the end of the argument, right?

  • @bluelouise13 Well, tried to be nice.. Truth is, Blaze's name will live on long after u are gone. He is allready in the cult songwriters heaven, never heard of you. So fuck off. Only fame you can hope for is dissing some dead songwriter legend on youtube.. Says a lot more about you than it does about Blaze in my opinion..This is a great song...Now listen to Clay Pigeons....

  • @bluelouise13 I would have to personally see those posters where Blaze opened for you, until then,... i'm calling bullshit.

  • Bluelouise13 has not done their homework. When Merle Haggard (one of the greatest songwriters of all time) has recorded your song....you are doing something right!

  • @bluelouise13 Willie likes this song. Merle Haggard likes it so much that he sung a duet with Willie in '87 and then recorded it again, over a decade later on his album If I Could Only Fly. Nancy Griffith has just recorded it for her upcoming album, Joe Nichols recorded it. John Prine recorded Blaze's Clay Pigeons, Lyle Lovett recorded Blaze's Election Day and both Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams wrote songs about Blaze. So many people like Blaze's music.

  • @mopacmedia Wow I can't even believe there's any questions about this song. just look at who's recorded it. and then there's Clay pigeons and many others Look at what John Prine said after listening to Blaze I think I liked this song even more when I read when and why he wrote it.. I say thanks mopacmedia for sharing this.

  • @bluelouise13 You just dont get it. Its ok..

  • @bluelouise13 It either hits you or it doesn't, but that doesn't make it bad. I'd guess you're frustrated because it's beyond you. I do not care for anyone just because they're in front of a mike.

  • The Lemmy Kilmister of country, bluegrass and folk music for sure. Blaze cuts through the bullshit like no other.

  • MY OH MY I THOUGHT THE HAG WROTE THIS SONG--LOTS OF THINGS I THINK AINT SO--THIS GUY BLAZE FOLEY IS A GREAT SINGER--5 STARS FOR HIM--THANKS FOR SHARING BOB--TY JOHN

  • Miss you Blaze. Not much else to say.

  • BLAZE--WOW--WHAT A JOB--5 STARS FOR YOU--AND 5 STARS FOR THE GUY WHO TOLD ME TO CHECK YOU OUT-THATS MR BOB MOORE--THIS IS A LONG SONG--BUT YOU TORE IT UP MY FRIEND--THANKS FOR DOING THIS MERLE HAGGARD CLASSIC--TY JOHN

  • Just the man and his music, that's it,period !!And that's what so damn good.

  • this video is worth more than gold

  • Blaze use to play at a bar I worked at in 1983-84. This song has been very hard to find since then, as I have moved back to my home of Ky. He had a way with music. Havent heard from him, since then, till the advent of youtube. Thanks for posting.

  • Is this guy any relation to Red Foley ? Like him by the way.(both)

  • @roadkil2 Glad you found out about Blaze. No relation, but Red Foley was definitely an influence on him. He changed his name to Blaze Foley in honor of Red. A friend once joked he was the illegitimate child of Red Foley and Blaze Starr. He used to drink "Red Foleys" which is vodka mixed with Big Red (a red, syrupy, caffeinated soda drink in the south).

  • @mopacmedia My Grand Dad was Red's partner for some time and even co-wrote a song with Red.

I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the song /my Grand Dad died when I was 12(1969).He was J.R. Smith known on the radio as "Yodeling Smitty". Played for some time on a radio show in Birmingham AL. back in the 30's. Thank You for the info.

  • @mopacmedia how did you get this video, are there more?

  • Comment removed

  • Strong song, I would of love so seen him play

  • Straight to the heart. Wow!

  • Would to God I could have been inited to this back yard performance.

  • if i could only fly .small gods make this happy.

  • I met him when I was a teenager. We had dry fruit in Austin.

  • Shit, they don't need any help looking foolish

  • wow , how can this song sound so effortless , but to try and write something like this ....???

  • The two people that disliked this video are oblivious....Simply Beautiful.

  • Rest in peace Blaze...

  • I had no idea that such an extraordinary video recording of Mr Blaze Foley existed. I only really knew of the late great Blaze through Lucinda Williams wonderful song Drunken Angel and more recently the wonderful album of Blaze Foley songs recorded by Gurf Morlix (Blaze Foley's 113th Wet Dream) but to hear such a beautiful song performed by the writer is just magic. Thanks so much for the clip.

    Tony

  • wow...just wow

  • Like a fuckin boss

  • The only thing better than this heartbreaking song is the fact that it was sung at a wedding.

  • thank you so much for this, I love Blaze, what a beautiful soul. I wish I could have met him.

  • What a beautiful man with a beautiful heart and soul. I wish I could have met him... where are people like this today? nowhere.

  • @SuperJenb13 Oh, they're still out there, but you won't find them on today's piece of shit country radio stations. Look toward Indie labels for this kind of stuff.

  • Any more of this I want to hear the next song!!!

  • you could get depressed without even listening to the words. This makes good music. the melodys emotion matches the emotion of the guitar. so beautiful

  • i have never heard of blaze b4 today.i am ashamed of myself. sitting her crying, listening to "if i could only fly". if there is a hell i hope the guy who killed this truly great talent., is there and suffering. rip blaze

  • If I were there, I would tell every one of those chatty-cathy's to STFU and give Blaze the attention and respect he deserves.

  • This is awesome, thanks for sharing this great clip.

  • "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeyeahhhhhh! WWF!!!" Geez what a knob. This is incredible btw,; never heard of this guy till i heard somebody covering this song on the radio last week

    .

  • I was very young when he was all the rage on the local music scene. Just a true loyal loving fan of Blaze Foley. May he rest in peace.

  • i love seeing him talk after the songs :) songs are truely amasing

  • When folk crab about me screwin' up I flip'em off and say "Hell, I've lived almost 12 years longer than Blaze Foley."

  • hey! any word on how to buy the documentary?

    thanks!

  • so gut!

  • this is truly the saddest/best song ive heard

  • @82ecampos Merle Haggard has been known to say "this is the greatest song ever written"

  • Comment removed

  • I just had to cry

  • the man

  • fucking retards talking through the song, no respect.

  • @sneijdertje10 Seriously, I was thinking the same exact thing. They had no clue they were in the presence of greatness. Let those with ears listen I suppose.

  • how lucky (especially in retrospect) to have had this friggin' genius at your stupid wedding....no offence

  • Quite possibly the saddest love song ever written...

The Duct Tape Messiah is missed!!!

  • beautiful song

  • Beautiful!

  • I almost felt you touchin me just now I wish I knew which way to turn and go I feel so good and I feel so bad Wonder what I oughta do If I could only fly If I could only fly Id bid this place goodbye To come and be with you But I can hardly stand Got nowhere to run Another sinkin sun One more lonely night The wind keeps blowin somewhere every day They tell me things get better somewhere up the way Just dismal thinkin on a dismal day Sad songs for us to bear
  • Thank you for sharing, I remember Blaze. He was a good friend of my dad's. God rest his sweet soul.

  • @mopacmedia Did you say there is an upcoming documentary? Anywhere one can find more info on that?

  • Yes -- we decided to re-edit it to add new material (archival video of Blaze) and will be releasing it hopefully this Summer or Fall at the latest (2010). The film is looking really good and I'm excited to finish it and make it available. Also, the website will be getting a makeover and a lot of video material will be available there.

  • @mopacmedia I'm reading opn facebook. The DVD is close to being released.A friend posted a video of him performing The Big Cheeseburger and good fries song.

  • @steele917 Hey man, good to hear from you! Yeah, getting closer, got some dates to show it, hope to bring it to the Alpine/Marfa area. Hey, post a link to that video here, if you don't mind, thanks!

  • @steele917 where would i be able to find it ?

  • @TheGrandCapt I had received info from Hank Sinatra an old friend of Blaze. He has a facebook page. There are a few video snippets out on youtube. Cheeseburgers and good french fries is on there somewhere/a nice video, from the DVD I understand. I'm waitin' too friend. it's been several months and I have not heard anything. I'll talk to hank & see if he has any info

  • @steele917 Thank you for replying. I recently found out about Blaze and I want to know so much more.

  • Wow, looks like Blaze has gotten kinda popular in the past 2 years. I remember when this video had only a couple hundred views...now it's 44,000+. Shit, I remember when there were no videos of Blaze on youtube.

  • God bless you Blaze! This is so good!

  • Thankyou for posting this...I echo the last comment, if there is any more footage it would be more then greatly appreciated. A True Legend. Thanks

  • @rikkidoolan82 Fortunately, there is more video. I'm working with it now, working it into the documentary about Blaze, which should be finished and available this summer (2010). And what I don't use, I'll try to get up here if I can get permission. Thanks for asking!

  • Was there any more video from the wedding of this great man?

  • Hey!! I'm from Cincinnati!

  • the real real deal

  • Prefer this one over the produced version with the musicians/band added. This one is so simple and piercing, straight to the marrow. On a par with Johnny Cash's version of hurt and Willie Nelson's Gravedigger. Only this is the original version by the original artist.

  • God Bless Blaze Foley. Long live the "Duct Tape Messiah" I'd give my left nut to have seen him and Townes play together. an artist, a genius, and one hell of a songwriter.

  • I'd give my right nut and then whoever is taking them could have two...that would be a concert...the video of townes and blaze playing Snowing on Raton is one of my favorites...

  • too real to be popular

  • You said it. It's too bad.

  • he kinda makes chesney, paisley, keith, rascal flatts ,mcgraw--look foolish

  • @iceaxe56

Until you see the bank statements.

  • @iceaxe56 -- they all looked foolish before they ever took a stage

  • @iceaxe56 no kinda about it, this makes them look like kids trying to play in a man's game

  • @iceaxe56 they are foolish

  • @iceaxe56 i fucking despise new country.....its pop with a southern accent. pathetic.

  • This song was played at my cousins funeral.

  • I like the song, but it does sorta sound like that arthur....dont get me wrong....maybe just sounds natural-like (lol)

  • arthur who?

  • I played this for a mate.A good guy,but ,he just didn't get it.

He said "it sounds like hes making it up as he goes along"

    Sad

  • @arthurdonachy

Well, it's funny you should say that, becoz I've just discovered this Blaze Foley, (now that IS sad !) and think he is a great artist and a very lovely man, but I got the same impression !

  • If a word truley captures it's essence then I would be so humble to utter the word... authentic.. where so many strive and yet fail.

  • Whats the story with the Duct Tape and Blaze Foley

  • Blaze was the duct tape messiah.

  • and the duct suit!?

  • He made several suits for himself and others. He would take a suit jacket from the thrift store, then he'd duct tape the lapels, pockets and sleeve cuffs were trimmed in duct tape.

  • he also duct taped the holes in his shoes, and anything else he could find to improve upon.

  • This is so touching. Love it.

  • new documentary recently premiered in Austin..: " Blaze Foley Inside (aka Drunken Angel)"

  • Hi -- unfortunately, "Drunken Angel" has not premiere yet (as of June 2009). Technical difficulties at the festival prevented it's premiere. It's been shown at a number of "test screenings" while we tweak the edit.

  • when it is available how can it be seen or purchased?

  • Soon -- we're conducting a few final interviews for it and finalizing the edit. We'll start showing it the beginning of 2010 and it'll be available later in 2010.

  • Merle Haggard recorded this song. How many people can say that? Of course Blaze wasn't always so nice in person. Some people think he was a dick but nobody ever thought less of him because of it. Well, not for long anyway.

  • This man's a true genious! God bless and rest his soul.

  • I love this song. haha and I heard this and of Blaze for the first time today. i am already trying to learn the song on guitar myself. It's so fun to play!

  • great song...

  • just noticed the drunk woman trying to sing in the background. I'd have smacked her for disturbing the song.

  • I'll bet you're a lot of fun at a wedding. I think you miss the point, espacho. But bless you anyway for listening to Blaze.

  • You're right, i wouldn't be any fun at a wedding. I'm a miserable bastard. Cheers to Foley though.

  • LOL, I completely take it back. Miserable bastards unite! Peace.

  • At first I thought it was a baby crying...yeah, she should have been ductaped and tied up..ha..stupid drunk lady trying to ruin a beautiful song

  • Strips the song down to its bones, and what gorgeous and sad bones those be. Genius.

  • Thanks for posting this video!

  • there will never be a video on youtube worthy of my tears after this one. if there is a god, I hope she blesses you Blaze. you are the only one who deserves it.

  • How did Blaze die?

  • got shot

  • @MilesPittman shot in the back by a son of a bitch who was acquitted for self-defense. He was a guy who had been stealing his dad's social security checks and Blaze stood up to him

  • Fantastic candid video. Love it!!

  • I love the intimacy of this clip, and how you can hear others carrying on their chit chat in the background, oblivious. The noise lessens towards the end as people start to catch on to the quality and sincerity of the performer.

  • Hey

    What's up

    Yes I'm older

    Still don't forget

Life is what you make of it

  • Very interesting, you can see that he is tethered to the surroundings by a very fine thread. It was a painful world he lived in. Brilliant writer.

  • Thanks for posting this great song!

  • I'm so glad this video was posted. Blaze's songs are just too damn great to be obscure.

  • I love blaze he writes some real down to earth songs , A tragic situation about his lost recordings .

    thanks for posting

please post more blaze videos please

  • Thanks so much for posting this. It is so great to hear Blaze himself. I cant hardly wait until you can post the second song he sings. Please hurry!! Thanks again for a great post.

  • What an absolutely Beautiful performance of a Great Song!

Does anyone know where this is from?

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Glad you like it! This video is from Sharon and Lew Andre Mathews, recorded at their wedding party in 1985. I believe in Austin.

  • My first time also. He's amazing

  • Thank you for posting this amazing video.

  • I'm speechless...my first time to hear Blaze.

  • AWSOME!!! Thanks for posting!

  • The way he gives his head a little shake at 2:36 makes me think that it's a tear that's falling. Could be sweat from under his hat. Either way.

  • i was just gonna post a comment about that very thing ....I think its a tear....But it may be sweat!!!

  • Either way - what an amazing song. It's his Birthday today. Speaking of a tear falling.

  • If this song dont make you cry then your already dead! Sing it to the angels.
