Canon EOS 7D Test with 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Even if this is supposed to be some sort of test shot, I liked is a piece of movie making, the music, the use of black and white, and the activities in the surf and on the beach.

im sure you wont know, but do you happen to recall what your shutter speed was at for the duration of shooting?

It was quite a long time ago, but I believe I had it multiple shutter speeds (really high, in the thousands maybe). Ideally you want a 1/50th. But I do like the kind of stagnant look high shutter speeds give some times. Hope this helps!

@CaleNicholsFilms I agree, I love the strobe-like movements during the action shots. also, question. this is irrelevant to the video, but im looking for a new lens. I cant decide if I want to get the 28-135 or if I should invest in some L glass. do you have a recommendation as far as video goes?

The biggest difference you know between L lenses and non-L lenses are build construction. There built far nicer, more durable, focus is smoother and faster, generally lower apertures etc...When it comes down to straight quality, L glass I find is nicer, but not dramatically nicer. Really depends what you're comparing it to. If you're debating between L glass and a 28-135, then yeah. Save for the L glass. You'll be way happier in the long run. Their great lenses.

nice work!! I use the T2i (baby brother) and plan to start filming my son surfing. Right now I am using the stock lens 18-55mm which is what I have used for numerous skate vids. However, due to distance surfing will be shot at, I am considering the 28-135mm and 55-250mm lenses. Any suggestions on which would work better?

@btm6903 Thanks very much! Although the 28-135 is a nicer quality lens, and far more versatile than the 55-250, it is not the best for filming surfing. I was right on the shore, toes in the water filming those surfing shots. That 250mm is going to give you that reach a lot more than the 135 will. However, if you plan on using it for more than just surfing, like filming some skate vids and such too, you might want to lean towards that one. Either way, both are pretty good lenses. Good luck!

@btm6903 You'd be better off just keeping that 18-55, then spend for the 70-200mm 2.8L glass which will give you professional clarity and focus. Though depending on the type of surf your son rides, you may need a greater telephoto zoom.
