@zsybrant it's not a "shameless ripoff". during this time nintendo was re-releasing famicom disk system games on cartridge, but they decided to use the american version of doki doki panic with mario characters because it's better (and the original DDP characters aside from the enemies weren't owned by nintendo). also both games were made by nintendo so they'd be ripping themselves off.

I'm talking about the Doki Doki Panic version. That version says that Birdo (Catherine) is a girl who often gets mistaken for a boy so would prefer people call her Cathy to help get rid of some of the confusion. The Super Mario Bros.2 Manual mistakenly thought that it said that Birdo is a boy who wants to be a girl.  And since Super Mario USA is a rejapanesed verison of the game they used the Mario 2 manuals information so that's why it says that Birdo is a boy when really Birdo is a gril.
