I used to watch vapor trails get made and stay trailed across the sky for hours when I was a little kid back in the 1950's. They are nothing new.

And they are made by the shock of a compressor fan, or even a jet's wing, going through supersaturated cold air at high altitude by basically the same principle that creates all clouds.
