Having paid so much for Guiness since this frankly superb advert, I hope the rightful owner of the advert idea took them to the cleaners for his rightful fortune. Still a superb drink...... and a bloody good ad too.........
This advert used to scare the fuck outta me as a wee boy and still does to be honest, his eyes are so creepy, there was another one when he drank it and his eyes went blue and his head spun round, was soooo scary :O
Wow. 1995? Thought it was 1990. Around the time of Italia 1990 World Cup. Come to think of it, it was in the year of a world cup( not anything but football)), so it's not 1995. !990 actually
Yes I agree; excellent advert and very original...except that it isn't and the idea was STOLEN by Guinness who then denied it. The original dancer was never paid or credited with his work and there was different background music. Meanwhile Guinness goes on to make MILLIONS. BASTARDS!!!!!
The song is actually Italian, more precisely Neapolitan and the author should be Renato Carosone. Its sweeping international success is also due to Perez Prado's brillant interpretation. Greetings from a Swiss-German
i think everyone has at one stage danced like this this while waitn on a guinness at a bar... while humming this tune..... its almost a rite of passage!
My son, born 1994 was mad on this and would be playing and if the ad came on he would jump up, dance frantically then sit down and carry on playing like nothing had happened when it ended. Was so funny. He aint impressed that I just played it to him seeing as he is 15 now, LMAO
went to the guinness storehouse in James's Gate there at the weekend and had been going on about this add for ages, there's a section on the tour where you can look at all the old adds and guess what : THIS WASN'T THERE!!!!
So I probably looked like a bit of an obsessive maniac to the people I had brought in there.
Still though, if any one from the storehouse reads this sort that out!
Every now and then, I exchange e-mails with Joe McKinney, the guy who did this ad. Recently, Guinness celebrated its 250th year, and they held a celebration in Dublin. Guess what - he wasn't invited!
Guinness used to have a screensaver made from this commercial that you could download from their website. I loved that screensaver. Anyone still have it around? I wonder if it would work with XP.
if you complain about wasting a minute of your life you dont have a life because you just go around videos making pointless comments and marking them down hence you have no life
actually they are. in the year 2000 they changed the law and before the year 2000 you were able to drink beer in an ad but there had to be someone in the backround drinking water or soda and after the year 2000 you had to change the beer so it wasnt acctually beer it was just coloured water
I think i depends where you live... I know in the UK the doctors booze want adverts banned. Two things.. 1. If I want a doctor's opinion I will make and appointment. 2. The medicalk profession has the highest percentage of alcoholics and substance abusers of them all... so fuck them. If they can't control themeselves, that's their problem LoL ... I love guinessI might add, get a better pint here in Euskal Herria that I did in the UK
I knew the Mehdi story. The marketing industry is full of sheisters with scant regard for intellectual property. He should've taken them up on directing it though.
Has anybody mentioned Mehdi Norowzian, the young dancer, now a film director, who was ripped off? He sent a demo called 'joy' which had the dance in it, to ARK , the sd agency who made the ad. They liked it, asked him to direct it. He didn't, bacause hhe wanted to give them a new idea. They got someone else, who filmed it, then they released it, and poor Mehdi got no money or credit. There was a court case, an appeal etc., but he still lost. That's why I can't really enjoy it.
this add was first shown in the cinemas, cant remember the film but what i do remember is the add getting the biggest laughs and applauds i've ever seen in any cinema for any film...
trust me im 18 going 19 and im having a life crisis allready... i have to get a job afetr uni and thee u go im 26/27 allready and thats towards the end of my physical peak which is like 5/7 years away! AND EVERYTHING GOES DOWNHILL FROM THERE... I HATE GETING OLD LOL
I used to like this advert when it was shown back in the 90's. I also remember there was a Xmas one as well where instead of the man in it, it had an animated reindeer instead doing the same funny face expressions as the man.
Guinness are planning to rebroadcast this iconic ad to celebrate their 250th anniversary! 'Dancing Man' actor Joe McKinney was cast in Dublin and 'Barman' actor Gordon Winter was cast in London. Originally just shown in Eire the music went to No.1 in the Irish charts, the popularity of the ad meant that it was then broadcast in the UK, Australia and South Africa. A court case brought by a disgruntled director claiming that the ad plagiarised a test ad on his showreel failed.
The ad is "Anticipation." The music is the 1959 Perez Prado hit "Guaglione." A friend of mine who owns a used record store here in Omaha tells me Prado had two other smashes: "Patricia" and a cha-cha version of "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White" (composed by French composer Louiguy.) "Patricia", became the last record to ascend to #1 on the Jockeys and Top 100 charts, both of which gave way the following week to the then newly introduced Billboard Hot 100 chart. (Thank you wikipedia.)
This ad terrified me as a child, at the tender age of three. I had to leave the room every time it came on. I simply thought this fellow would, as my father recalls, "drink me".
It just so happened, when I took a trip to the shops with my adoring nana one afternoon before I had even started preschool, THIS same scary dancing man was doing promotional work! Being the typical grandmother that she is she had to document to sheer terror in my eyes by taking a photograph. You dont get over that shit
dat is mad!! at da same age i was petrifyed of it!!! no joke!!! i used to scream nd run behind da couch!!! i use to call him the "du du man" cause of the beats in the music!!! wow it still gives me chills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, this is nothin' special. I used to dance better than this ... after downing fourteen pints of Guinness! Greetings from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia!
Anyone remember the name of film from which the idea was lifted from?
There was an old black and white film with the same music, camera style and someone doing this dance around a rose instead of the glass...
