  • Anyone remember the name of film from which the idea was lifted from?

There was an old black and white film with the same music, camera style and someone doing this dance around a rose instead of the glass...

  • Brilliant ad

  • Brilliant advert. Was it really so long ago. Eeeeek.

  • TRY THE BLACK AND NEVER LOOK BACK

    "Something closer...something CLOSER...Something close-aaaawwaaaahhhaahhhh. eehhhhhheeaahhhhha. "

And it goes on like that. Anyone have any idea?

  • Having paid so much for Guiness since this frankly superb advert, I hope the rightful owner of the advert idea took them to the cleaners for his rightful fortune. Still a superb drink...... and a bloody good ad too.........

  • This used to be my screen saver ..... class.

  • Kind of reminds me of funny music played in movie Office Space.

  • Reminds me of Mr. Bean :]

  • I used to have this a screen-saver at work .... with sound! It was class! (I wasn't very popular when I left my desk for 3 hour meetings though LOL)

  • were is he today haha

  • Was it really 15 years ago that this ad hit the TV screens.Feel dead old now.Classic ad.

  • reminds me of a lot of good nights out, class ad

  • This advert used to scare the fuck outta me as a wee boy and still does to be honest, his eyes are so creepy, there was another one when he drank it and his eyes went blue and his head spun round, was soooo scary :O

  • Still cracks me up 15 years later. I love how he's impatiently staring at the barman at 0:45.

  • Suspect whoever came up with this was a fan of silent film. Superb timing and pace. A classic.

  • its only an advert

  • OMG , I loved this advert! Great stuff!

  • Nice but the Rutger Hauer campaign was better!

  • what stupid add

  • the best guinness add ever.

  • I regret not doing this dance when I was waiting for my complimentary pint at the Guinness factory last Sunday!

  • what happens in every pub in Ireland on friday : )

  • Wow. 1995? Thought it was 1990. Around the time of Italia 1990 World Cup. Come to think of it, it was in the year of a world cup( not anything but football)), so it's not 1995. !990 actually

  • To show my appreciation of this fab advert when it came out i actually tried a pint of guiness and been drinking it ever since.....Very nice!

  • loved this advert so much i went out and bought the cd to get it into the uk charts back in 95.....lol

  • The best ever Guinness advert!

  • I used to have this as a screen saver for my old computer that fried. I can't find now. ='(

  • @23metroboi23 same. it was on my dads computer 10+ years ago and i've been looking for it ever since . . .

  • I normally go for a piss while my Guinness is settling...

  • haa haa funny even now, years later!! Good ones never die

  • ultimate lol and omg and WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!! I am going nuts by watching this! what a nut case he is!

  • Yes I agree; excellent advert and very original...except that it isn't and the idea was STOLEN by Guinness who then denied it. The original dancer was never paid or credited with his work and there was different background music. Meanwhile Guinness goes on to make MILLIONS. BASTARDS!!!!!

  • LOL, Dancer looks like Peter Barlow fro corrie.

  • The song is actually Italian, more precisely Neapolitan and the author should be Renato Carosone. Its sweeping international success is also due to Perez Prado's brillant interpretation. Greetings from a Swiss-German

  • BRILLIANT!!!

  • This is one of the most iconic adverts of all. Once seen, impossible to forget.

  • are you for real? you have no taste

  • what is the name of the music background?

  • what weird fucking place do you come from?

  • great song, amazing commercial!

  • what a fantastic tune

  • Gas.

  • My son, born 1994 was mad on this and would be playing and if the ad came on he would jump up, dance frantically then sit down and carry on playing like nothing had happened when it ended. Was so funny. He aint impressed that I just played it to him seeing as he is 15 now, LMAO

  • Which Mambo is this one? I don't think it's Perez Prado's Mambo No. 5. Sounds like a Perez Prado piece though.

  • It is a Perez Prado piece, and it is "Guaglione".

  • fantastic !!!

  • Now thats how a white man dances!!

  • No sir thats how an irish man dances

  • Drinking in moderation is one of the most ridiculous statements ever made. You must drink a little more than moderation!

  • can anybody tell me the name of the song...

  • the song is called guaglione by perez prado.

it's the perfect song for this ad! :D

    classic!

  • Whoops! I should have scanned the previous messages before asking what song they used for the ad. D'oh! :)

  • Best commercial ever!

  • this is sublime advertising at its best, a movie all of its own

  • went to the guinness storehouse in James's Gate there at the weekend and had been going on about this add for ages, there's a section on the tour where you can look at all the old adds and guess what : THIS WASN'T THERE!!!!

So I probably looked like a bit of an obsessive maniac to the people I had brought in there.

Still though, if any one from the storehouse reads this sort that out!

  • Every now and then, I exchange e-mails with Joe McKinney, the guy who did this ad. Recently, Guinness celebrated its 250th year, and they held a celebration in Dublin. Guess what - he wasn't invited!

  • classic ad n a classic song, gd times lol

  • good things come to those who wait lol

  • Guinness used to have a screensaver made from this commercial that you could download from their website. I loved that screensaver. Anyone still have it around? I wonder if it would work with XP.

  • 1 minute plus 2-5 seconds to load this page!

  • THE BEST GUINNESS ADVERT brings back

the golden era of irish soccer back in the 90s

the tune itself is by Perez Prado which was put

back on the map by guinness great find

  • if you complain about wasting a minute of your life you dont have a life because you just go around videos making pointless comments and marking them down hence you have no life

  • @racefacethepreist u sir.....................just totally powned dat noob hahahahahaha im joking but i tip my hat to u hahahah

  • beer ads/anythinhg alcaholic ads.. there legally not aloud to show the person drinkin there beer. or alcahol

  • actually they are. in the year 2000 they changed the law and before the year 2000 you were able to drink beer in an ad but there had to be someone in the backround drinking water or soda and after the year 2000 you had to change the beer so it wasnt acctually beer it was just coloured water

  • yes they are you asshat

  • I think i depends where you live... I know in the UK the doctors booze want adverts banned. Two things.. 1. If I want a doctor's opinion I will make and appointment. 2. The medicalk profession has the highest percentage of alcoholics and substance abusers of them all... so fuck them. If they can't control themeselves, that's their problem LoL ... I love guinessI might add, get a better pint here in Euskal Herria that I did in the UK

  • I knew the Mehdi story. The marketing industry is full of sheisters with scant regard for intellectual property. He should've taken them up on directing it though.

  • Ah the good olde days! i just had to get a look at it for old times sake!

  • Has anybody mentioned Mehdi Norowzian, the young dancer, now a film director, who was ripped off? He sent a demo called 'joy' which had the dance in it, to ARK , the sd agency who made the ad. They liked it, asked him to direct it. He didn't, bacause hhe wanted to give them a new idea. They got someone else, who filmed it, then they released it, and poor Mehdi got no money or credit. There was a court case, an appeal etc., but he still lost. That's why I can't really enjoy it.

  • i used to dance to this when i was 2 lol

  • its about to be re-released very soon (inside info ;-)

  • Song please???

  • Guaglione by Perez Prado.

  • Guaglione by Perez Prado

adds used to be so funny, unlike nowadays :(

  • i use to dance to this when i was 2

  • Classic! Probably my all-time favourite ad. 0:53 is my favourite bit.

  • this isnt the best advert..the best advert in the world (that was actually voted the best ad) is guiness surfer...good voice for the ad dont u think?

  • Up Clare!

  • cause its worth the wait ya fool

  • i did this dance all the time when i was younger..knew it off by heart :L

  • I used to like this advert when it was shown back in the 90's. I also remember there was a Xmas one as well where instead of the man in it, it had an animated reindeer instead doing the same funny face expressions as the man.

  • Legend of an ad! Ah the memories

  • anyone remember the freaky halloween version of this ad featuring the same actor but his head does a 360'? freaked me out as a kid!

  • huh.

  • Guinness are planning to rebroadcast this iconic ad to celebrate their 250th anniversary! 'Dancing Man' actor Joe McKinney was cast in Dublin and 'Barman' actor Gordon Winter was cast in London. Originally just shown in Eire the music went to No.1 in the Irish charts, the popularity of the ad meant that it was then broadcast in the UK, Australia and South Africa. A court case brought by a disgruntled director claiming that the ad plagiarised a test ad on his showreel failed.

  • So what, or where's this 'Eire' then?

  • Eire is the Irish name for Ireland.

  • Strangely enough it actually makes me want to drink it and I don't even like Guinness.

  • It makes me want to drink it and I've been tee-total for the last three years. In fact, WTF am I even doing watching this???

  • Anyone remember the Christmas parody of this superb commercial ?

Same tune but the guy was replaced by a dancing riendeer ... never seen it anywhere since it was first made.

    Annoyingly.

Wish someone would post it on youtube.

    Billy.......

  • YES!!!!

  • wat a man.

  • The ad is "Anticipation." The music is the 1959 Perez Prado hit "Guaglione." A friend of mine who owns a used record store here in Omaha tells me Prado had two other smashes: "Patricia" and a cha-cha version of "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White" (composed by French composer Louiguy.) "Patricia", became the last record to ascend to #1 on the Jockeys and Top 100 charts, both of which gave way the following week to the then newly introduced Billboard Hot 100 chart. (Thank you wikipedia.)

  • Thanks for the reference! Nice one.

  • oh i was so scared of dis as a child!!! id cry nd scream nd hid behind da couch wen it came on!!!!

  • why were you scared?

  • Haha love this =D

  • I thought this was a Caffreys add lol. so much for the power of advertising lol

  • This ad terrified me as a child, at the tender age of three. I had to leave the room every time it came on. I simply thought this fellow would, as my father recalls, "drink me".

It just so happened, when I took a trip to the shops with my adoring nana one afternoon before I had even started preschool, THIS same scary dancing man was doing promotional work! Being the typical grandmother that she is she had to document to sheer terror in my eyes by taking a photograph. You dont get over that shit

  • dat is mad!! at da same age i was petrifyed of it!!! no joke!!! i used to scream nd run behind da couch!!! i use to call him the "du du man" cause of the beats in the music!!! wow it still gives me chills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what was it scared you so much?

  • now THAT's nostalgia

  • Very very good. I remember this advert and trying to do the dance!!

  • Dont know what its called but its by Perez Prado Orchestra

  • That bloke looks like Steve MacDonald off Corrie!

  • -.- The guiness rhythm of life 1s better

  • i think every1 loved this ad wen it came out.

  • Ah, this is nothin' special. I used to dance better than this ... after downing fourteen pints of Guinness! Greetings from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia!

  • my fav guinness advert ~ i remember watchin it as a kid and then seein my dad and uncle dancin like that!! soo funny :) xx

  • anyone know the name of the tune?

  • Guaglione by Perez Prado. It is actually a cover version of an Italian Classic.
