  • Stanley Clark was the first main player I studied even before Jaco. He's the only guy who can teach you so much about playing just one note.

  • This has got to be one of the greatest solos of all time. A beginning, a middle and and end. It is what is missing from 90 percent of all solos. Stanley you rock!

  • LOVE my Bass!!!! Just delicious to my soul. Thanks for sending me this gem and the poster of this vid; it is lovely and :46 that white guitar most Beutiful. LOVE this artists deep deep soul resonating right within. XXXOOO Magnificent!!!!!

  • :46 That White Guitar is a delicious --> instrument. I am replaying over + over; now this time closing my eye + allowing its melodious calming melody seep into every weary bone in my body refreshing my soul with knowing an Angel Being truly does care about me. That alone is healing. ;-) SO Thank you 'Stanley Clarke for this solo of delight. Tears came; a gentle being I AM and emotions are being effected right now making me WEEPY. Gems like this sent your way in loving-ness is Priceless. XXOO <3

  • best bass ive ever heard

  • merde, mes vingt ans...

C'était autre chose que le rap...

  • 0:41 that is one ugly bass, but i still want to have it!

  • @bunchOcookies Alembic...Ugly??? I guess everyone has an opinion but DAMN!! Go to Alembic website and check out some of the most beautiful, playable pieces of art that exist. It is an instrument to hand down for generations. I have played/owned every bass known to man (and some maybe not) and Alembic is without a doubt one of the best. Don't get me wrong, I love my 40 yr old P bass, and wouldn't take 10 grand for it, but I would be proud to own an Alembic.

  • @4to88strings I don't know about how it sounds or plays. I think it looks ugly, Just my opinion though, i prefer the Jaco Pastorius signature! Love the vintage looks.

  • @bunchOcookies I hear ya. I wasnt trying to preach. Anyway Im a Fender guy. Prefer P over Jazz but I have an exceptional P (sold my jazz a year ago) If you love the old stuff youd love my P It is still somewhat black but well worn. Bought used in 77. It was either it or a Rick 4001. I have NEVER regreted my decision. She's sweet.

I've played 'em all. I even have a cheap Ibanez 5-string that plays and sounds great. BUT if you ever have a chance to play/hold an Alembic you'll be in love. Later.

  • @4to88strings cool i love P's. I have a Fender Jazz bass. Dunno the exact price anymore, but she's real easy to handle. I'm saving money right now for a Fender P. I love how the Jazz basses play, but Precision basses have a real good sound in my opinion.

I'll try to get hold of an Alembic once.

  • @bunchOcookies Paid 300 for my P back in the 70s I've turned down offers for 3000. Was playing rock/ jazz and installed DiMarzios for a hotter sound but went back with original PUs. It came with rosewood fb but has a maple since early 80s. You can hear some of my stuff at Ourstage and/or facebook under Diego's Diner. Personal profile on Ourstage is Low B. I had a nice Jazz until about a year ago. My influences range from Stanley to Entwistle to Geddy Lee. Good luck in your P search.

  • @bunchOcookies By the way, If you want to hear some of Stanley's best stuff, check out Return To Forever's

Romantic Warrior. Amazing album. One cut in particular "The Dual Of The Jester And The Tyrant" is awesome.

Some of Stanley, Chic, Al and Lenny's best work ever.

  • this men looks like hendrix of bass lol

  • wicked beyond...excellent upload thanks awesome pix also....woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Two distinct bass tracks.

  • amazing

  • I am so glad that I'm old skool. Just to be able to listen to the world's greatest musicians and their memories are priceless. It does the heart and soul good.

  • this bass solo is so relaxing yet it also transmites joy... together with the different techniques used & their performance, the great melody, harmony & rhythm it has and its awesome back-up (drums, guitar & keyboard) it brings one of the greatest bass solo EVER.

Simply amazing, awesome, or should I say fantastic? No words???

Then it's a masterpiece. But not any masterpiece, This is one of the biggest pieces ever. (& It's about schoold days!!!)!.!

  • @Kradantoste Nuff said ;)

You are 100% correct, I bow before you..

  • @Kradantoste Well Said

  • @Kradantoste for someone saying no words you've sure said alot! You must be American?

  • @rintintin7529 The reason I said it its because some people may be speechless towards this & when I get inspired by such masterpieces I have the tendecy to write a lot. And No I'm not American. I think you can see in my channel my nationality (which btw is Portuguese). Still thx & enjoy this solo.

  • Hard to find joy and virtuosism at the same time I find it Stanley Clarke

  • I have never seen anyone perform surgery on a bass until now!!!

  • One of the best bass players EVER!!!!.

  • i love marcus and if he loves stanley...i guess i have to do it too. but dudes, Jaco is Jaco :)

  • I own this CD. Truely amazing

  • Is that Dune Tune I hear in the beginning? OH MY GOD. If you haven't already heard the song look it up, but the likeness is uncanny.

  • @lwm3398 Its not exactly the same, but its very similar! Stanley Clarke have some other song thats about the same, also from The Bass-Ic Collection. Cant remember its name tho....

  • @Wetter02 I know it's not exact, but it's definitely a similar melody.

  • @lwm3398 that exactly what I thought!? It was so alike :S

  • @lwm3398 No mat...its the other way around, Mark King and Level 42 ripped off Stanley something rotten on at least their first 2 albums...Most Brits have never heard of Stanley Clarke back then and even now. I do like Level 42 and thought some of their early stuff was amazing - 'Brit Funk' at its best. Then I discovered Stanley in '85 and realized where it all came from. Mark King - Great Bass player, Stanley Clarke - Bass Legend, underrated and still unknown by so many in the UK...

  • @lwm3398 def Dune tune to these ears

  • I was introduced to Stanley Clarke long ago and to listen again this piece ,is magic but the exact version is impossible to get ...so I will try to post it to you .....Your version is and stays number one .....Thanks for your reply ..The solo from Itunes from the BASS-IC collection is differend and lasts 7 mns ...Why ?Big mystery ..Disappointed to buy it ,and got not what I wanted ....which is your version ....which lasts 4.30.......

  • soy de el salvador stanley sera mi heroe

  • @Wetter02 ...I'm trying to get this exact version ...I follow on I tunes the bass-ic collection school days solo and it last 7mns .. your version lasts 4mns 31 ...I listened again and again ...different version ...very disappointed ...HOW TO GET YOUR VERSION mY FAVORITE tHANKS VERY MUCH

  • @pearlbeachbagus I'm not 100% sure that I understand what you mean, but here is what I think you mean:

If you buy this song on iTunes you get the exact same song only with a different solo? And you like this solo more then you like the "new" solo?

If I got that right then I dont know what to say really. I havent heard the iTunes version's solo. Would very much like to hear that! This is from the original CD "The Bassic Collection", which my father got many many years ago.

  • @Wetter02 ,....Thanks for posting it I love it .........The best bass ....ever ...I don;t know Victor Wooden and Marcus Miller ...bur will investigate ...

  • Pastorius isn't an idol?

  • @Drezin86 Nevermind. Saw your above reply :)

  • @Drezin86 Actually, Iv'e never really been crazy about pastorius. Dont get me wrong, he is one of the best bass players ever, no arguments there. But its just not my kind of bassplaying.

  • I would LOVE to buy this version ,solo ....Not avalaible on Itunes !!

Does anyone knows How and where can I get it ?

My favorite of all time from Stanley Clarke ...The MASTERPIECE ...He is genius !!

  • @pearlbeachbagus I havent heard the iTunes version's solo. Would very much like to hear that!

This is from his CD "The Bassic Collection", my father got it many many years ago, probably around the same time it was released. This song is bassicly the reason I started playing bass!

  • I love the sound and the looks of the white neck thru

  • this is the closest feeling to wonderfulness

  • GREAT ONE!

Everyone, stop defending your favourite musicians! Whether people think it's good or bad, that's how they feel and nothing you will say will change that. Why get drawn into a senseless argument? Look how many support these comments get? It distracts from the music whenever I read them, but I like to see what people say. It's becoming more and more of a toss-up whether I should read or not. Also, ignore comments that you think are stupid or inane or badly spelled or all three!

  • this is the reason I love the bass. when i first heard this, man. nuff said!!!

  • 0:44 - 0:54 Delightful...

  • 0:14 Jimi Hendrix playing bass!

  • Comment removed

  • stanley clarke is the greatest bassist that has ever lived.........period

  • this is just awesome. a 4 and a half minute long orgasm on my ears and spirit

  • Mind blown. That is all.

  • ive not heard this before, hence the surprise when i realise the first few bars of introduction are where Level 42 got the theme for Dune tune.............slow on the uptake ?....yes, and still strangely surprised.

  • brilliant , even after 30 odd years , superb playing

  • good stuff :)

  • 0:40,wow,that is some sexy bass.

  • alex webster is an amazing bass player, but totaly uncomparable to clarke or miller

  • 6 people in the world disliked this.

We now know that 6 morons watched this video.

  • dude this is not school days are you unable to read or write? major dumbkopf

  • This sort of bass playing can almost make my bollocks melt: not quite, though :-D

  • I only have 1 thing to say [WOW}!!!!

  • I remember the first time I head this album, I think it was back in 1981 or 2 ...oneo f my first influences on the bass as well as Mark king at the same time..

  • This was way ahead of its time, amazing!!!

  • love it

  • Stanley Clark is a very very good and talented bas player i will always say big up big Stanley

  • Some of the comments here are just incredibly stupid. This is an amazing artist at work, completely himself, not Hendrix or Van Halen on bass, but purely Stanley. I had the privilege of attending a bass workshop of his in 1976 and he was all about the music and the instrument, not the bullshit. Enjoy it for what it is, pure joy in music and his instrument.

  • @katepillar19 well said. :)

  • hmmmm I just like all music that I like its a shame that you get scum trying to ruin it and make there irrellavant opinions dominate I dont see why there has to be a pathectic competion when in my opinion whats most important is not being shallow minded or ignorant

  • stupid prick there different people and different players its not a competition

  • MUSIC ISN'T A FUCKING COMPETITION

both are great in their own way, so shut the fuck up and listen to the music. no to the technique

  • Eddie VanHalen is Stanley Clark on guitar!

  • 2:58 Jimi Hendrix on Bass.

  • His upright work is more impressive.

  • Agreed.

  • FANTASTIC quality upload thankyou

  • yeah... wooten is great... but.. my other two bass idols are billy sheehan and jaco pastorius... ;)

  • I WAS A WITNESS WITLESS 11 year old WHO LUCKED OUT & ATTENDED THE SHOW IN MPLS. .....NEED LESS TO SAY! MM

  • I wasnt sure after the first min. After that, man thats awesome.

  • Pioneer on electric bass

  • and double bass

  • Fuck you ForgetTheCow2, Stanley is awesome and you are a two inch peepee.

  • the bass at 00:40 rocks my world

  • It's a Jeans Ritter I think

  • yeah it is, his basses are so fucking expensive though.

  • I jizzed

  • I for one would like for them to have cut back on that synth-strings section they've got. Other than that the rest of this clip is STELLAR. This man is out hell of a bass player....

  • really pleasing to the soul

  • I dont see how Claypool ripped off. Shit I hear his bass playing and I know right away its him. How'd he accually get into the picture here anyways? lol This is a stanley clark bass solo...funny.

  • How can somebody rip off of themself? It's HIS STYLE. He's not going to use a different style of bass for every band he's in. His style of bass is his style of bass. Get over it. And One Better received 680 more 5-star rating than this video... so I don't think you can call it shit. Obviously he's doing something right if the only one calling him a shit bassist is a dumbass like you.

  • Wow, you're really steadfast on being an absolute dipshit. Show me one song by Les Claypool that is a "rip off" of another bassist. The only way you can be a rip off of another musician is by either stealing their music (progressions, structures, etc.), he simply takes his INSPIRATION from classic funk bassists and weaves incredible original pieces out of it. Goddamn dude, you realize he's been an active PROFESSIONAL bassist since '79 right? He was PART of the evolution of bass.

  • Funny, in an interview with Dirk Lance he says that Les Claypool is among his favorite bassists and inspirations.

  • I'm sorry, but Les Claypool's style sounds NOTHING like Clarke. And while he obviously has INFLUENCE from Larry, the sound of his style is completely different. To call him a rip off of any of them is fucking retarded.

So every modern funk slap bassist is a rip off just because they share obvious influences?

Just because Alex Webster plays metal bass, which obviously differs from the origins of modern bass styles like funk and slap, but that doesn't make him any more unique than Claypool

  • Though Flea I will give to you, I'm not a fan of him. But the reason why he hardly makes a true contribution to the world of bass is because he was taught how to play by his guitarist, he showed him the style and techniques that he still uses to this day. He's not original.

To say Claypool is anything short of unique is a crock of shit though. He is completely self-taught and developed his own style of bass that is distinguishable as hell

  • Last time I checked, Alex Webster started off as a Jazz bassist, meaning he LEARNED from BLACK bassists like Stanley Clarke. You are obviously not a multi-talented bassist if you can't respect the origins of bass. Hell, even the heaviest bassists (like Webster) throw in Jazz and Funk fills. Listen to Blotted Science, he throws in his own "metal" variations of old school bass licks like crazy.

And Claypool didn't rip off of shit, show me ONE "70's" bassist that he plays/sounds like.

  • You would dare call Claypool and Balzary shit when saying the bassist from Cannibal Corpse is good!?

Buh, I won't start because i hate these Youtube bitch matches.

  • F'n amazing solo!

  • I noticed u said your three idols were Stanley Marcus and Victor, PLEASE tell me you saw SMV Live then, it was one of the most amazing things to have occurred on this planet

  • Ofcoarse!!! IT WAS THE MOST AWESUM THING I HAVE EVER SEEN, Stanleys solo was so damn damn damn damn good!!! unfortanitly Victor "missed" a few things in his solo when he was here in sweden. Mainly i'm a wooten person, have seen him live 2 times (Palmystery tour and SMV), and i'm gonna see SMV this summer again on the Jazz Festival in Stockholm.... i just can't wait... :P

  • @funkbeastbasslover I was lucky enough to see Stanley, Victor and Chick Corea all in the same gig. I think when I left the gig, my brain had melted.

  • A smooth and superslick funky jazz glimpse from the 70s. Thanks also for the great array of photos!

Feel free to drop by my jazz blog, recently praised by the great Marc Myers of JazzWax -- for link see my profile.

    Peace.

    Brew "Soloman" Lite

  • one of the best bass solos ever

  • ah the old 'your mom', nice to see you had a decent response up your sleeve...

where do you guys come from? seriosusly.

  • the track school days is from the album 'school days', the bass-ic collection is, as its name suggests, a compilation of Stanley's music, primarily as a bassist and composer.

  • Really tell me more....your ability to use Wikipedia is astounding :P

  • ok... my last comment was to inform the person who provided the info for this video. sorry for being informative, guess I should just keep my big knowledgeable mouth shut, even if he is my favourite bassist. And who needs wikipedia when you have a decent album collection?

  • Your mom needs wikepedia when you have decent album collection.

  • Great!!!

  • 3:09 is that him and John Lennon?

  • NO ! That is not the Great John Lennon .

  • geese you make it seem like it would be an insult for Stanley to be seen with John Lennon

  • eifach genial

  • There aren't that many pictures that show how tall the man is. He makes those Alembic short scales look like little toys.

  • this is a song to get down to business to

  • I like the same ones too bro... Victor, Marcus and Stanley. Marcus is my fav tho.

  • woooooow man, that's what I call a solo. Stanley Clark got RYTHM

  • Didn't Stanley get the first Carl Thompson?

  • referring to the info: what about jaco pastorius ??

  • I have nothing against Jaco at all

he is a very very good bass player:

but he just aint "my thing".

  • Clarke that shit up!

  • The "modern man" himself! He will be known as THE all-time greatest. I was listening to him back in the seventies...man the weed seemed even better when I played this song..

  • the weed still feels better. man long time ago since i had some good weed :p

  • i'm just now running across stanley. i've been up for hours listening through his music. this is absolutely amazing!

  • stanley is GOD

  • Haven't seen him in years but WOW!

  • all three are very talented, but my idols are Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, Flea, and Alex Webster....look em up if u have never heard them.

  • what about entwhistle?

  • holy shit your idol is alex webster?! you deserve a subscription for that. les claypool and flea are good too. and hey have you ever heard of nathan hughes? hes fuckin ledgendary

  • Alex Webster? What gave you that idea? I never heard of him.

  • Dude from Cannibal Corpse. Good bassist, but no where near Mr. Clarke.

  • @Wetter02 lol. alex webster is the bassist for cannibal corpse. he's a very technically skilled bassist, but its nothing like this. check out the instrumental version of frantic disembowelment on youtube. its not melodic in the least. but its very techy

  • @Wetter02 actually its only somewhat techy. if you compare it with stuff like brain drill and viraemia lol.

  • @Wetter02 Webster is fucking beast, tho he plays DM not jazz etc.

  • @2scrimble9 ALEX WEBSTER!!!

  • stanley is the best!!

  • u got exact the same idols as me :P

  • awesome time capsule. the calluses on his fingers must be 12" thick.

  • 3 idols, huh? :-)

So did you see the SMV-show?

  • Beautiful Basses!!! O_O

  • Men still on their way....

My way is to reach Stanley's level

  • never forget this about jerking og with your soul technique gets lost

  • anyone know what this song is on?

  • ..... the title says "stanley clark SCHOOL DAYS solo"

  • The Bass-ic Collection

  • he is the bomb

  • did he always played Alembic basses??

  • Nah, played Carl Thompsons too, same guy that makes Claypool's Rainbow 6er and his piccolo 4 on the John the Fisherman Video

  • yehh hes got an Alembic signiture bass its a lovely piece of work.

  • love Stanley on this historic cut, and his band was rediculously right on. Garcia on guitar, the incomparable David Sancious on Keys, Gerry Brown on sticks. Incredible and, never again.

  • I remember listening to this when i was about 10. I knew i wanted to play from then onwards, didn't really start trying properly until recently, last year. I hope to reach stanley level one day!

I also want to play a Fodera.

Shut up. We are all aloud to dream. =)

  • Bass Club Chicago... I've played one there... Its just... Melty? Dreamy? I don't mean to upset you or any thing... not like I have the cash to own one... But they are here :] I think it hurts that they are so close... yet oh so far.

  • That was to KurtSandford by the way

  • Awesome....Stanley Clarke....I'd love to have Stanley and Bootsy Collins back to back plucking those basses....off the hook!!

  • :X:X

  • holy shit the beginning sounds exactly like dune tune

  • almost like a hendrix of bass

  • Almost? :P

  • its debatable

  • i love it

  • EXCELLENT....VINTAGE.....I know every note in that song.I still have my alblum.LOVE IT.

  • very nice!
