I really wanted to like this but found Poppy's character a bit unbelievable- as stated below. Like she was trying to be a cartoon character, a comedy gold character like one of the women from Abigail's Party. Because of the beautiful way it was filmed, it would have been much better if she had played it more naturalistically, I feel.

It isn't uncommon to see people that are a lot like Poppy. I know many people that are very much away with the faeries. Although, I've spent my life around actors and artists. You've got to be a little bit free to express in these two areas.

Unfortunatly, it's MORE common to see characters like the driving instructor. Yet people seem to like to hate on positive people. What's up with that?

@vwwarrior It's because people who are always really obviously happy grate on your nerves. You have to focus on what they're saying because you need to know how to respond since it's not something you're used to. Plus, they take a lot of energy to be around because you're forced to stay alert and be active. It's hard to be full-on for a long period of time without feeling like stabbing somebody. You just feel uncomfortable and don't know how to act when you're with somebody like that.

Poppy and Scott the driving instructor are caricatured characters, Poppys eternal optimism is exaggerated , as is Scotts offishness....The film was not as good as some of Leighs other work, but still very watchable once!

That girl drove me crazy. She had a screw loose. Nobody reacts happily to every single moment in the day....like she did. I could not take anymore of this film, so I left the theater within 20 minutes. I've done that twice in my life. Also with Airplane. Just too stupid to watch.

Her performance was not in the least insufferable (not to me). She wasn't coy and winky and smug like all Hollywood actors. Her smile always looked like it came from deep within. And believe me, I was ready to lash out if I saw any self-conscious cuteness.

This is a really good movie, actually. Unfortunately, you have to live in or drive to a big city to get a chance to see it on the real screen, and even then you're advised to run rather than walk to get a ticket :-)

Absolutely brilliant film. Hilarious but also amazing characters. loved the fact that it wasn't like a usual film which concentrates on the storyline and isteead focuses on teh characters and the message and questiones it imposes i.e what makes us happy. GO SEE THIS FILM. Peepin and a creepin!

I absolutely loved it.

Not only did it have me in stitches...but as usual I also found mike leigh's character development supurb. I know these people! or at least I felt i did. The cast was brilliant, and their contribution made the film incredible to watch.

My friend & i talked about each of the characters in great length over dinner afterwards, and then we hopped on a red double decker london bus...only to hear the people behind us talking about the same film!

I went to see this last night.

Pros: Great acting by all, literally all, especially Poppy and the Driving instructor, he;s amazing. The film made me feel good about London and our lives here.

Cons: Mike, the scene where they visit their boring relatives in Suburbia, straight out of 'Meantime'. And the grumpy sister was trying to be Jane Horrocks, who totally overacts, great for Tesco ads, from 'Life is sweet. The actors need to not watch Mike Leigh's back catalogue, starting to feel formulaic.

This film was hil-arious! I havent laughed that much in the cinema for ages. The casting decision of Poppy and Scott (driving instructor) was genius. Those ppl who say the film was not good are just sour old bitties. They prob. need to heed the film's msg more then most. I want to be Poppy's friend, and also say glimpses of myself in here. Kudos to Mike Leigh!

British social realism visits a cinema near you. Well, not quite. Poppy is as irritating as she is unbelievable, but I reserved my disbelief for her driving instructor who spits and snarls the most utter tripe you've ever heard. Totally unconvincing. Some of the ad-libbing is occasionally wooden, but there are some inescapably warm moments in this film. Poppy can be charming, but by the end I wondered what it was all about. Go and watch Amelie - it's less pretentious & more fun.

Saw the film yesterday in a premiere in London. It's soooo much fun! I recommend it to everyone. Go and watch it, you will not regret it. It is a kind of Amelie turned English! Really nice

Sally Hawkins is very beautiful, i love her eyes, her smile, her face, everything about her. I like to see her do a movie again with elaine cassidy, they're very remarkable in fingersmith, I cannot forget that film, I love their performance, their chemistry is good, they both are very fantastic actresses. I'm looking forward for a sequel of their film Fingersmith. Sarah Waters is also a very remarkable novelist, I do hope she would be able to write a sequel to her famous novel Fingersmith.

I absolutely agree with you! On all counts! Fingersmith just evoked so much emotion. It was an amazing movie. Even after being as long as it was, at the end i was still wanting to see more of what was to come after they got together. That right there tells you it was a good movie. I must buy the dvd and watch the film uncut and uninterrupted. Sally Hawkins is so so lovely. :)

Did you think that Sally Hawkins' character is reminiscent of the bulimic Jane Harrocks in "Life is Sweet"?,also the ranting driving instructor was very much like the acidic tongued David Thewlis in "Naked".

Does anyone out there have "Nuts in May"?,would love to see that again.
