If anyone has any footage of Lars and Gene wrestling as the original Minnesota Wrecking Crew, please post them. I'd also love to see more of Ole and Gene together as well as Gene solo.
The Andersons' gimmick was the tough guy wrestlers who did NOT use a set up finisher. Of course they did often end with arm locks, usually after dropping a million knees onto a hammer locked elbow.
But their deal was just beating you up and winning, instead of instilling fear with a hold like the claw, heart punch, figure four, etc... To my mind, this made them even more menacing.
Arn was the first to really have finishers like the gort-buster, spine buster and DDT, but he always worked the arm.
Actually in Japan, one variation is a common submission move known as the Fujiwara arm bar. Antonio Inoki used it as well, and Maxx Payne called it the Paynekiller during his tenure in WCW. Not to mention the Andersons (Ole, Gene, and Lars) all used variations as their finisher for years, usually preceded by a top rope kneedrop. Not the flashiest or most well known of finishers, but not entirely uncommon.
The first time I saw Lars Anderson, he was promoting the "Aspen Academy of Wrestling Arts" in Aspen, Co. This was back in '78 or '79. The only other wrestler I remember from the organization was Steve "the kid" Collins. This aired on WTBS (I think). It was a really weak and boring show, but Lars really stood out above the other tallent. Does anyone have any other videos of the promotion, or GCW matches with Lars involving the other Andersons?
@lawlersarmy I remember that also..it was on channel 36..The Black Cowboy a Dusty Rhodes clone was one of the stars as was his partner SuperSoul..Steve "The Kid" Collins was my favorite on there.
In his book the Rock said that as a kid he wanted to fight Lars because he felt he was disrespecting his grandmother while running their family's Polnesian Wrestling promotion.
Yeah, the Anderson family tree was very confusing. Sometimes Gene was older sometimes Lars was. Sometimes Arn was a brother, sometimes he was a cousin. They really should have all sat down together & got their stories straight.
Excellent mic skills. He really understood how to cut a promo.

Up until this point, the only one of the Andersons I remember ever speaking was Ole. Darn sure never saw Gene speak. (Ole had the best mic skills).

Lars Anderson is the type of wrestler I like.
He was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records (1979) as the Highest Paid professional wrestler - earning $4M over 3 years

Some heel fan in the audience keeps calling Lars a backstabber during this match, if you listen close you can hear it. Must be an Ole fan.

Very rarely in Professional Wrestling has ANYBODY submitted to an armbar.

Yea, originally Arn & Ole were cousins. I WISH they'd done it where Arn was Gene's son.

Lars had a nice run in the AWA from 1968 or so to 1972 or so as 'Lucious' Lars Anderson, after his Minnesota Wrecking Crew thing with Gene.
