Eu sempre entendi que "Surf's up" deveria significar algo como "o surf esta no ar", ou "o surf esta no ponto", significando que o "o surf esta ótimo" - como uma ironia aos tempos de surf deles.
Great comments! Indeed, Mike Love ruined Smile...and, arguably, Mr. Wilson (listen to enough interviews and one gleans Love's lack of understanding hurt Wilson immeasurably). What a tragedy. What would Brian Wilson have completed if he had support? How might popular music as a whole be different today? This song is pure beauty...the music, the lyrics, the feel...absolute perfection. One wonders if we understand it today, over forty years later.
mike love is a loser. brian wilson should have started his own solo career. i think "smile" would have been completed in mid-1967 if not for his stage father, his cousin, and the pressures stemming from those two.
@predlycon No, I think Brian just didn't have it in him to complete the project. That's not to say the lawsuit from Capitol and family issues helped at all, but it's telling that by Spring 1967, he had dropped work on everything but Heroes and Villains and Vega-Tables for a single release... SMiLE was effectively over after the missed January '67 delivery date. It's easy to say one person or one factor was the point of no return, but real life is far more complex than that.
@TheBoldImperator You're right but Mike has always been a proven asshole. He kicked Parks out, objected to Brian's "ego music" every step, and thought it impractical and less lucrative than surf and car songs. He did not want it out and Capitol wasn't supporting it. Brian had the fire and genius to complete Smile and beat the Beatles but who knows if he would've finished either. He came close but now it's a timeless treasure of genius and is now my most beloved gift to music.
@pluginhoney Van Dyke left of his own accord around March 1967, after the project started to collapse. Mike really had nothing to do with it (the objections he had to Cabinessence weren't near enough to make him leave). The rest is pretty much spot on, but hear this: All these things were true for Pet Sounds. All these things continued to remain true for Smiley Smile, which was 10 times more wacked out than Smile ever was. The Beach Boys backed Brian, come hell or high water.
Not only was Brian better than the Beatles during this period. He was also more HANDSOME than any of the Beatles....

"Como esta o surf?"
"O momento esta ótimo para surfar"
"How is surf?"
"Surf is up"
Entende?

@predlycon It's funny to see Mike Love saying in recent interviews "we worked quite hard on Smile, it was a good album". Money grabbing toss pot.

Sheer perfection! Pity Mike Love & the others didn't have enough confidence to move a bit away from cars, girls, the beach etc
