Check out the New Riders of the Purple Sage recording from 1972. Great version by a Grateful Dead spin- off band with Buddy Cage (from Ian and Sylvia's band) on pedal steel.
Very good rendition. If you haven't done so already, you folks might also like to check out the Flatt and Scruggs version of this song, which has served as the model for Bluegrass bands which have come along later.
This is a very early video. Todd Sams who is thier current banjo player was also the original banjo player as seen in this clip. Todd wasnt with the group very long before leaving and being replaced by Calvin Leport was the longest serving banjo player. Calvin then left and was replaced by Ned Luberecki and then Calvin returned. Calvin has since left again and has been replaced by Todd Sams so it seems that as far as the banjo goes they have come full circle LOL
This type of music is being let down by the most unethical industry on the planet - the American music industry. All we get to hear is the crap that is on radio, which is an unmeasurable total of the music recorded. Payola in radio is alive and well.
I don't know when Calvin left the Herd, but I know he went on to teach lessons at a little business somewhere here in South Eastern Ohio for a while. Whether he's still doing that or doing something else I don't know. I always really liked watching him play though, I have yet to see someone who can pick a banjo like he can.
