  • Radio Shack were such shady bastards back then! That phone is a Nokia Talkman, they just removed all the branding.

I have a Nokia 101, and a Radio Shack CT-353. They are the EXACTLY the same phone! All RS did was just stick their logo over Nokia's.

You wouldn't be able to get away with that today, that's for sure!

  • How much is the app pappi jump on that thing?

  • Does it run Android 2.3?

  • I had one of these. Damn thing was 4lbs and only worked when it wanted to. All of that for a cheap price of $3200.

  • What apps does it have?

  • Oh hi, my car just died. Could I borrow your cell phone so I can jump start the battery?

  • '

  • I think there's an app for that

  • i wonder if this is 3g. i bet reading text must be a bitch

  • i cant believe it!

  • i can die happy now

  • 0:09 ROFL. Even in 1990, people were "enjoying a leisurely lunch" by yapping away on their cell phones.

  • OMG, that is a big "cell phone".

  • Is this a cell phone, or a cordless pay phone?

  • I'm trading in my cell phone for this NOW!

  • And it's getting hard to find numbers with only seven digits printed on signs these days as well! Gosh, I feel the changes from 1990 to 2010 were greater than they were from 1970 to 1990! I'm not THAT old, but I can already feel the "I Miss Those Days" bug; plus the music/TV was better back then!

  • What a pain in the ass. I bet 5 people bought that.

  • I could never imagine myself carrying one of those gigantic things around, not even back then.

  • technology has come this far in 20 years yet theres still no cure for cancer...............i find this hard to believe

  • WOW!

  • Would be funny to see someone walking around with one of these!

  • That kid has a Tandy 100! My very first computer :)

  • OMG thats so unglam.....

  • I want a cellular telephone dad!

  • I wonder what the hell it cost per minute to talk on that Behemoth?

  • WTF? THATS HUGE!!!

  • Talk about a brick! I still remember when they sold that tank!

  • They see me rolling!!

  • HE'S GOT A BOMB!!!

  • screw the iphone! I want one of these.

  • Buy a cell phone and get a full body work out.

Maybe they should still have that size. They should.

  • i wonder what kind of apps it runs.

  • wtf is that thing the kid is on?

  • is that kid Bill Gates?

  • wow i didn't know kids knew about the stock market lol

  • reminiscent of the Emergency! squad 51 biophone (rampart)

  • reminiscent of the squad 51 biophone, emergency!!!

  • lol that was the iphone back then :D

  • Try to tell me the kid who appears 20 seconds into this clip isn't a young Bill Gates. Go ahead, try.

  • It got texting? "I sent that b*tch a smiley face. B*tches love smiley faces!" -Ed Wuncler III

  • This was actually late 80's, probably 86-87.

  • mine had a hand crank to power the damm thing.

  • NERD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111

  • Wow, even in 1990 cell phone users were dicks.

  • shit that was only 20 years ago :-O we sure have come long way...

  • i think that phone battery was also used to restart a yugo

  • commercial: "BUY THIS BIG O MILITARY LIKE MOBILE PHONE FOR ONLY $2000, YES, ONLY $2000, IT IS SMALL, PORTABLE, AND COOL LOOKING, AND THE BEST OF ALL, IT IS ONLY 5KG!!!"

    thumbs up plz?

  • i wonder, if i were to get ahold of one of those, could i get it re-activated? cause i need one just like that to finish off my costume for lebowski-fest!

  • @captspaulding100 those were all analog, I don't know of any carrier still allowing analog service.

  • @captspaulding100 Nope, since all mobile networks now use GSM/GPRS for their 2G services and this advert was before GSM networks were introduced. They were only rolled out back in 1991

  • @captspaulding100 Nope - Surely analog which was canceled in 2008.

  • @captspaulding100

    Phone's ringing Dude.

  • @captspaulding100 you couldn't unless you stripped out the guts and put a new cellphone's innards inside. those phones, even phones from 10+ years ago, don't know how to talk on today's networks.

  • @captspaulding100 No, a lot of analog networks have been shut down I think

  • @captspaulding100 Those phones used AMPS which was an 800 MHz analog band. The last carriers to still offer the analog service shut down service in 2008 because pretty much everything had moved on to digital standards like GSM or CDMA, so you couldn't get it activated today.

  • god damn, are we een living on planet earth anymore. i feel like an alien after watching this shit

  • Was that a young Bill Gates at the end?

  • We had a car phone built into the truck and a bag phone, both Motorola. I think we still have them around here somewhere. Then the smaller phone(7" long x 2" thick) with the flip down talk flap and antenna that you had to pull out. The tips would fall off and the antenna would get stuck in the phone.

    I'm glad phones kept developing!

  • @LeakFreak I had a teacher in the early 90's with an early flip phone. I remember thinking that it was sooo tiny. And that it was awesome lol!

  • LOL at 0:22 the kid is playing with a prototype iPad

  • @zimmyzimgir That's actually a portable word processor you typed and edited your document or spread sheet and then you plugged it in to 16 pin printer connection and it would print your document. We had a few of them in my elementary school in 1992 or 92, we hated them becasue you could not play Number Munchers, or Organ Trail on them.

  • Jesus man take break leave the phone at home and spend some time with your damn kid!!!!!

  • OMG from this cellphone to the Iphone in 20 years long way jump

  • Required monster-sized box, and still it only made phone calls!

  • A LAP TOP REALLY!

  • Dude that kid at the end of the commercial is the same kid in that Beethoven dog movie!

  • I could never imagine someone walking around with that gigantic thing.

  • Wow that cell phone is huge, it looks like a carrying for some small item. That kid in the las frame of the commercial looks like the kid who played Marc Foster-Lambert on Step by Step.

  • damn that kid looks sooooo damn nerdy!

  • That kid looks like a young Bill Gates :P

  • Wha I bet my laptop weighs less then this thing.

  • Carry One Of Those Around In A Major City And Lose It.. ATF/FBI Homeland will be all over that phone

  • I want one!

  • Compared to now, a cell phone ain't anything special without the common features of a pocket-sized computer, music player, camera, & just about everything but the kitchen sink*.

*kitchen sink app available someday in the 21st century or later.

  • Dodge diplomat... i think thats what the car is.

  • You could beat someone to death with that monster.

  • lol you can bludgeon somebody with that

  • lol

  • Can you say GIANT TUMOR.

  • Is this the new iphone 4g? :s

  • L00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000L and i know an 8 year old with an iPhone...

  • We've come a long way.

  • What was the "laptop" that his son had?

  • @EgaoNoGenki

    Looked like a trs-80 model 100 or 102

  • The good old days, when you could smash in a car's windshield with your cell phone...

  • I bet this drops fewer calls than my iPhone.

  • ha ha i remember the only people that really carried those around were the rich or businessmen now our phones are much smaller and even your grandma has one!

  • Well it has to be mid 80's because the kid has a TRS-80 Model 100 laptop computer. Probably 1983 because the model 200 came out in 84

  • by 1990 seems radio shack was offering portable cell phones. lol Well anyways, there used to be a commercial on here from 1988 where Radio Shack was just introducing the car phones.

  • LOL I think the kid at the end of the video was the actor that played the neighbor kid in "The Gate"...think his name was Terry in that film. One of my favorite scary movies.

  • This looks like a Saturday Night Live skit! LOL

  • I want 1

  • kicks the iphones ass!@

  • isnt that the boy from Beethoven 1+2???

  • Hey, that kid was using a TRS-80 model 100! ...there's one right beside me, right now.

  • With this new telephone, not only would it be portable, but it would also guarantee muscles like Hulk Hogan. Then again, I'm sure we would laugh at commercials 20 years from now too lol. By the way, isn't that the kid from the Beethoven movies???

  • i got one of these monsters, stil working

  • 1990? You Mean 1980?

  • looks like a radio from WW2

  • White steve urkel 0:22

  • OMG, look at the size of that thing! XD

  • wow that is new iphone

  • Cellular Telephone! 8D How cool does THAT sound!?

  • lol that cell phone is like a whole pay phone :D

and the kids computer was just hilarious.

Man has technology come a long way.

  • I used one of these when I worked for a delivery company. It cost around 40 cents a minute and you could recharge it with the lighter in the car. You had to have a good reason for using it, the charges added up fast!

  • Can I use your bomb to make a phone call.

  • "i heard about the merger, 500 shares!"

    rofl

  • Sorry son i would've let you borrow my phone... but it was too big to get out the car.

  • Much better than Iphone.

  • lets compare it to the iphone :D

  • damn. we sure have come a really long way. if anyone's seen using these, i can bet that they will be heckled and laughed at (sort of like theme park guests who come in with the monster video cameras instead of using a flip).

  • Daddy don't know shit about the stock market.

  • I have to make a telephone call. Can I borrow your cell phone telephone?

  • And the best part is you got 5 whole minutes of battery life!

  • good thing too, because that $19.99 per minute was a bitch

  • i wonder what kind of plans they had back then. xD

  • is there an app for that??

  • is that the new blackberry

  • I'd look so cool carrying that around in my backpack nowadays, I take it out to talk and probably be suspected of being a terrorist :P I wonder if you can change the ring tone :D

  • HES GOT A BOMB!!!

  • 90s? I saw the 80s model not connected with any box, just a brick. But this looks like 70s or older...

  • They forgot to mention that you can also jump start your car battery with that cell phone battery. Dang! Yea that's convenient, carrying around that 20 pound case.

  • People call it a brick phone, but it looks like a box phone.

  • yes I heard about the merger. I'll have 100 shares.

  • Only 175 lbs

  • LOL looks like a cordless phone attached to a car battery.

And what the boy had looks like a fucking giant calculator.

  • what did that kid have on his lap?

  • A tandy model 100 or one its descendants.

  • It looks like a TRS-80 model 100.

  • a word processor, IE electronic typewriter

  • A really early laptop..An Epson maybe? Or Timex?

  • @RevengeCreature That's a TRS-80 Model 100. I have one.

  • @Tuckerx78: it was a like computer for kids, tht u could type on it and stuff. i had one like tht

  • @psp4324 The TRS-80 Model 100 wasn't marketed to kids. It was quite the design for it's time but since it's less powerful by to-day's standards then it could be mistook for that perhaps.

  • .........and it only weighs 5 lbs!

  • lol

  • alligator are you serious?!!!! this needed to be wound up AND needed plutonium?!!!! the mind boggles lolol.
