And it's getting hard to find numbers with only seven digits printed on signs these days as well! Gosh, I feel the changes from 1990 to 2010 were greater than they were from 1970 to 1990! I'm not THAT old, but I can already feel the "I Miss Those Days" bug; plus the music/TV was better back then!
LOL..he looks like hes able to call in an airstrike with that thing...Wow 20 years went by fast...Im dating a girl now that was 3 years old when this commercial aired rofl
commercial: "BUY THIS BIG O MILITARY LIKE MOBILE PHONE FOR ONLY $2000, YES, ONLY $2000, IT IS SMALL, PORTABLE, AND COOL LOOKING, AND THE BEST OF ALL, IT IS ONLY 5KG!!!"
i wonder, if i were to get ahold of one of those, could i get it re-activated? cause i need one just like that to finish off my costume for lebowski-fest!
@captspaulding100 Nope, since all mobile networks now use GSM/GPRS for their 2G services and this advert was before GSM networks were introduced. They were only rolled out back in 1991
@captspaulding100 you couldn't unless you stripped out the guts and put a new cellphone's innards inside. those phones, even phones from 10+ years ago, don't know how to talk on today's networks.
@captspaulding100 Those phones used AMPS which was an 800 MHz analog band. The last carriers to still offer the analog service shut down service in 2008 because pretty much everything had moved on to digital standards like GSM or CDMA, so you couldn't get it activated today.
We had a car phone built into the truck and a bag phone, both Motorola. I think we still have them around here somewhere. Then the smaller phone(7" long x 2" thick) with the flip down talk flap and antenna that you had to pull out. The tips would fall off and the antenna would get stuck in the phone.
@zimmyzimgir That's actually a portable word processor you typed and edited your document or spread sheet and then you plugged it in to 16 pin printer connection and it would print your document. We had a few of them in my elementary school in 1992 or 92, we hated them becasue you could not play Number Munchers, or Organ Trail on them.
Wow that cell phone is huge, it looks like a carrying for some small item. That kid in the las frame of the commercial looks like the kid who played Marc Foster-Lambert on Step by Step.
Compared to now, a cell phone ain't anything special without the common features of a pocket-sized computer, music player, camera, & just about everything but the kitchen sink*.
*kitchen sink app available someday in the 21st century or later.
L00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000L and i know an 8 year old with an iPhone...
ha ha i remember the only people that really carried those around were the rich or businessmen now our phones are much smaller and even your grandma has one!
by 1990 seems radio shack was offering portable cell phones. lol Well anyways, there used to be a commercial on here from 1988 where Radio Shack was just introducing the car phones.
LOL I think the kid at the end of the video was the actor that played the neighbor kid in "The Gate"...think his name was Terry in that film. One of my favorite scary movies.
With this new telephone, not only would it be portable, but it would also guarantee muscles like Hulk Hogan. Then again, I'm sure we would laugh at commercials 20 years from now too lol. By the way, isn't that the kid from the Beethoven movies???
I used one of these when I worked for a delivery company. It cost around 40 cents a minute and you could recharge it with the lighter in the car. You had to have a good reason for using it, the charges added up fast!
damn. we sure have come a really long way. if anyone's seen using these, i can bet that they will be heckled and laughed at (sort of like theme park guests who come in with the monster video cameras instead of using a flip).
I'd look so cool carrying that around in my backpack nowadays, I take it out to talk and probably be suspected of being a terrorist :P I wonder if you can change the ring tone :D
They forgot to mention that you can also jump start your car battery with that cell phone battery. Dang! Yea that's convenient, carrying around that 20 pound case.
oh, god, how cud u have service on water, when it says : "cellular service available in most major cities"? when did water become a "Major City"? am i missing something? oh, not to mention that it probably weighed over 10 pounds!
@psp4324 The TRS-80 Model 100 wasn't marketed to kids. It was quite the design for it's time but since it's less powerful by to-day's standards then it could be mistook for that perhaps.
Radio Shack were such shady bastards back then! That phone is a Nokia Talkman, they just removed all the branding.
I have a Nokia 101, and a Radio Shack CT-353. They are the EXACTLY the same phone! All RS did was just stick their logo over Nokia's.
You wouldn't be able to get away with that today, that's for sure!
